GadgetNutz's storybreaking reporter, The Bandito, has uncovered a developing story concerning Sony via his network of industry insiders around the Sony camp.

On the heels of various industry reports of the lackluster sales of Sony's new Playstation 3 console up to, during, and beyond the Christmas season, it's no wonder that Sony feels internal pressure to alter it's course to more profitable waters. Obviously, the number one deficit of the new electronic entertainment device is the sheer number of newly introduced technologies, each with it's own seemingly continuous chain of production pitfalls. This same collection of newly deployed technologies directly impacts the pricing, further straining the retail sales of the Playstation 3. Considering that HDDVD technology is moving towards a broader market of consumers, Blu Ray is taking a considerable hit regardless of the Playstation branding.

One doesn't have to pay close attention, or even take a second glance, to see that Sony, as a large corporation, has dropped the ball in it's own court. It has been reported time and time again that Sony has been facing financial difficulties, having to lay off workers, close plants, and refocus parts of their business. What only a few expected, Playstation 3 sales failed to match even the reduced supply during this holiday season. The affect of this has rippled through the major electronics retailers, creating a need to ship stock from store to store, and further impacting what profit margins retailers expected to see from the launch of a major new platform. The slick new Nintendo Wii and the powerhouse Microsoft XBox 360 managed to dominate the market, taking full advantage of the price differential, supply problems, and even the imagination of the consumer market. The season, in reality, isn't even over, and there is already a new captain at the helm, an almost unprecedented event indicating changes to come.

At a cost of over two hundred dollars per drive, the Blu Ray is the force behind the massive cost of the Sony Playstation 3. It is speculated that Sony is bleeding some three hundred bucks per unit, and continues the wild trend of manufacturers losing cash on the console in expectations to get their money back on the software. However, with a scant dozen titles or so, Sony holds little hope of a quick turn around in their fortunes. From it's core, the powerful Cell processor, with it's poor production yields, has added pitfalls to it's on rollout that is compounded by the difficulty in mass producing the Blu Ray in the Playstation 3. The tremendous cost of product, let alone support and delivery costs, may have been a factor in the recent executive level staff changes, but that change (of executives) has pushed the importance of other changes up the ladder of importance.

Sony is rumored to be making drastic changes to recapture the market before losing even more of it's command share to the likes of Nintendo (the success story of the holiday season) or the XBox 360 (still suffering in the land of the rising sun, but gaining momentum everywhere else). In a move that one source says is "aimed at family pricing," Sony is rumored to be working on a Playstation 3 that does not include the Blu Ray drive. Whether this will result in the current low-end model having a change, or a newer "entry level" Playstation 3, remains to be seen. However, this is in stark contrast to their previous, egocentric, statements regarding "what kind of consumer"* will be looking at the Playstation 3.

To further fuel the fire, Toshiba has been reported to be getting ready to announce at CES (The Consumer Electronics Show) a new HDDVD player in the sub-two hundred dollar range. If these reports hold to be true, Sony's Blu Ray hopes may be dashed in even more markets than just that of the video-game arena. The steep pricing of Blu Ray players already make the Playstation 3 the entry level model, and Toshiba may have just put the nail in the coffin of this format. This holiday season was Sony's chance to leap ahead of the HDDVD format, establishing Blu Ray in the consumer market.

Supply problems alone would have likely created problems with Sony's hopes about Blu Ray, but with lackluster sales it is nearly a forgone conclusion. This puts Sony in a terrible position of not only trying to turn their ship around, but if they aren't careful--it could very well sink. A Playstation 3 without Blu Ray technology may save the Playstation from the fate previously seen by Sega's Saturn, but it will be the death nail in the Blu Ray coffin.

something tells me the ps3 wont make it, i didnt want to belive it nut its seems true. sony really needs to do something to regain their customers, market share, and well what ever else they need

If there's a PS3 without blu-ray what games would it play since all curent games are on that format? I dont see PS3 dying by any means

sony should just drop the blue ray player altogether. the ones who already got the PS3 are doomed. they bought a failed format.

It's not like anyone owns any of the PS3 games other than R:FoM anyway. Just do a recall on it. Judging from this past year, Sony loves to do recalls :p

I would wait till after Christmas/Holiday Season 07 before declaring anything dead or failed. First, the PS3 will need stronger exclusive titles. As great a game as Resistance is, people wont hand over 500-600 dollars just to play it. Add in games like Metal Gear Solid and it becomes a bit more appealing. Secondly, I think Sony needs new people in charge of ad campaigns. I'm sorry but a crying baby does not make me want to purchase this system, I bought being someone who's been a Sony product fan since I was little. They may be loosing a lot on each PS3 console, but Sony is a huge corporation that receives income from alot of mediums so it's not exactly going under any time soon. There's clearly a market for this system as shown on launch day, and Sony needs to find it and harness it. It's a fantastic system that I love and is capable of doing so much. Nearly 900,000 Ps3's have been sold thus far and it will be important to keep an eye on that number as the year goes on. Sony doesn't have to win this generation war or even come in second, but it must sell of course. 2007 should be interesting

I think it's still a little bit early for Sony to be thinking about the worst case scenario. If, when supply picks up demand doesn't keep up with it, then fair enough, but as of now they don't really need to do anything. Gamers need more incentive. The best thing they can do is bring out some good games.

Ya way to early to be calling that. First the PS2 is still outselling the 360 even if the PS3 isn't. Second Blu-ray and HD are still virtually neck and neck with both doing bad, and neither even close to being a winner yet. Also the PSP hasn't done bad in sales either.

(Not hard to find the sales numbers)

"Since the release of the Xbox 360, Microsoft has averaged 246,000 console sales each month in the US, while the PS2 has seen an average of 473,000 units—a number bolstered by an estimated 1.5 million sales in December alone. Leaving out December, Sony's average drops to 302,000 per month, still outpacing the Xbox 360 by a healthy margin."

Sony may be hurting, but if they can get their PS3 numbers up they should do better. I don't see them dying as a company, or a video game producer anytime soon.

The only real good PS3 game is Resistance. And it's nowhere near a Halo or GoW killer.

sony as a whole is hurting. thier other divisions are'nt doing any better either. the ipod has basically killed thier electronic divisions and the only thing keeping thier film division up is spiderman.

sony has been loosing alot of money for couple of years now. so they have every reason to fret.

In my honest opinion all fanboyism a side I have to agree Sony is failing and they are doing really bad. But I'm going to wait a year or so and see that hopefully that the untapped potential in the Playstation 3 is actually able to spit something out like Killzone 2 even though I know its a pre-rendered trailer I still have my fingers crossed.

I kind of feel bad because I've actually been thinking a lot and have been thinking about selling my Playstation 3 for an Xbox 360. I played Gears of War over at my friends house this past week and oh my god I f**king love that game, i'm a dumbass for putting down the game just so I could get back at all the Resistance haters.

It was such a mistake to play it on whatever the lower rank is than Hardcore. But then again there is Ratchet and Clank and Resistance 2. Man only if Insomniac worked for Microsoft. Oh well :D

P.S.

Who says Blu-ray is a failed format, a ton of people are liking it? Thats all i've been hearing about. I mean there are all those Blurray commercials that are like hyping the **** out of it and then at the end they ***** slap HD DVD and say "Oh yeah its on that other format to but buy it on Blurray." I actually think Blurray might win the format war, just look at how much **** you can put on it. That is going to be amazing for games if developers would take advantage of the space.

blue ray won't win anything. and i've barely seen commercials for it.

Yes, they are, of course lots of company's are now a days. Sony wanted 1 million PS3's sold by December 31st and we're that far off that mark. Like I said, after Christmas 2007 I think the picture will be clearer

All I've seen for Blu-Ray is when the announcer dude says "Now availiable on DVD and Blu-ray"

Actually Sony has passed the 1 million mark.

No, NexGenWars has it over 1,000,000 also.

Yeah I saw they updated it, but this morning it was in the 894,000 range or so, and last night it was definitely under a million. Thanks tho
