$400 PS3 with Spider-man 3 BR RUMOR

I doubt that would happen considering they would have to change the motherboard. If they don't do it now they never will unless they phase out the 40 gig PS3.
but they will be selling PS3s with 2 different motherboards, the 40 and 80gb. They could always just replace the 40gb version with the 80gb one

That's what I'm saying. If too many people are not happy with the lack of B/C in the 40GB, then Sony will phase it out and replace it with a better one. Maybe a $400 60GB will be in the cards at some point in the future.

Yes, I know that but would Sony do that within a short period of time and take an even bigger hit per console? That is the question.

People are stupid, and if they buy a 40gb PS3, and try to play GoW2 on it, what happens? They wont blame themselves, but will blame Sony. Granted, you gotta be really stupid for that, but seriously, would you doubt it happening?

If people throw a fit about it then Sony can revise the hardware again with BC put back in. It was a dumb mistake to take it out in the first place, but if it really is a problem, then Sony will learn quickly.

Yeah, but what about those people who already spent the $400 on PS3, they'll just be SOL. Sure bc isn't the only reason you're buying a PS3, the real reason is the new games (once they're finally released), but bc is a nice extra feature, I've got a number of original X-Box games that I bought after getting a 360 that I always wanted to play, but being X-Box exclusive couldn't.

I think it was stupid to take BC out for the 40GB, especially since it was not very expensive to impliment. But Sony's logic here is that if someone's eying PS3, and they must have backward compatability, they'll shell out an extra $200 to get the 60GB SKU. It's pretty stupid IMO, and hopefully the 40GB won't take long to be phased out for a more fully-featured version of the system at the $400 or less price point.

For now though, if someone's primary objective is to play PS3 games and watch movies, the 40GB will do just fine since it plays games exactly the same way as any other PS3 SKU. But if they want the ability to play and purchase PS2 games, I agree that the options are quite poor.

People who own, or plan on owning a PS2 probably have a PS2.

And if they don't, it'll be $100.

It seems like people just don't want to switch between the consoles while gaming...

Ywah people would do that but Sony has it in bold lettering on the package that it does not play PS2 games, so its the consumers fault for that.

Um the 60gb is only $100 more, not $200

If you can still find the 60 gig.
I can go into most stores near me and get one if I didnt already have one and the 80gb is only 599 bc of the bundle. It would be foolish for anyone to think thats going to stay that way

I went today to get Transformers, and they only had the 80GB ones....

UK PS3 sales up by 178%

According to GamesIndustry.biz, the introduction of the new 40GB PlayStation 3 and the price drop on the 60GB bundle has increased sales by 178% in the UK.

Currently the PS3 is standing at #3, just behind the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. With Sony now offering a cheaper 40GB PlayStation 3 for GBP 299, consumers with shallow pockets are now picking up the system.

However, this that is not the only move the company has made. As previously reported, Sony has also dropped the price on the 60GB model to GBP 349 and bundled 2 free first party games with the console.

Will Sony have the same success when they bring these deals to the U.S.? Only time will tell.

Along with the rumored Fifa and PES bundles, Sony is going to do well this Christmas in the UK.

I haven't seen any 60 gigs in all of my local EB, Futureshop, Wallmarts, in the past few months.

399 PS3 to hit October 28th? Target seems to say so.

Saw 8 60GB and 8 80GB PS3s when I went to get Transformers last night. I go that Best Buy every 2-3 weeks and there's never been more than 8 on display since Feb., so there might have been more in the back.

Went to Sams and they had 7 60 gig's and 8 80 gig's.

PS3 confirmed for North America (Updated)

Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America has now confirmed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 will make it's way to the U.S., releasing on November 2 for a retail price of USD 400.

If that wasn't good enough, Tretton also confirmed that the 80GB version will be getting a hundred price cut, dropping it from USD 600 – 500.

For the new 40GB PS3, Sony has removed its ability to play PS2 games, which for some people was a selling point.

"We're choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40-gigabyte model and the great software coming out," Tretton said.

"Backward compatibility is a nice secondary consideration, but it's far from the number-one priority."

With this recent announcement we can only hope that the U.S market responds to the new SKU and price drop like the U.K., driving sales up 178%.

No word on Spiderman 3 being bundled with the 40GB PS3 or if the 40GB will be the white ceramic version seen in Japan and Korea, but stay tuned as PSU will keep you updated.

Update:

We have been notified that the 80GB price cut is effective immediately.
Additionally, according to Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles, the 40GB PS3 will come bundled with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc as previously rumoured.

Do you here that? That is the sound of the tide turning.

I might have to wait for a PS3, I'm about to buy a 46" TV :o

How do price cuts work? Places carrying the stuff HAVE to mark it down? I thought stores bought the stuff from the manufact.'s and set the prices themselves.

I know I'm naive. :-(

Jebus, see this is why we need a mod in here updating thread titles, Neogaf does it all the time and it works great. How many 'PS3 price threads are on page 1 alone :o)
