What I'm wondering is if the writer is tasked with writing the new Fantastic Four reboot...what classic or modern Fantastic Four comics would you recommend the writer to use as source material and gives him/her an idea of what the Fantastic Four are like?

The Byrne and Hickman runs. Some Kirby, but your probably better off using the Byrne "retellings" of the important Kirby elements.

If you're adapting the FF then the Lee/Kirby run is absolutely ESSENTIAL reading material...more important than any other run on the title...it's not just the backbone of the FF franchise, it's the backbone of the ENTIRE Marvel Universe. And John Byrne's would of course be the next most important. Mark Waid and Mike Weiringo's run was pretty fun. Grant Morrison did a four issue miniseries years back called Fantastic Four: 1234 that is a personal favorite of mine. Hickman's run started right around the time I had to give up collecting comics because of the cost, but what little I've read is good and I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I guess no one's a fan of the Ultimate comics. :p

What about learning Doctor Doom's origin? Because for that I'd recommend Fantastic Four: Books of Doom.
