It's another freaking planet that we've been sending rovers to since the 70's. I guess I'm being pessimistic with my whole not being excited for doing what we've done before and being surprised about how people who've never expressed an interest in astronomy before becoming fair weather fans of NASA over this.

Want to get me to go insane? Find life or put a man there, another little robot is cool but not something to celebrate over if you're not an astronomy buff.

Right, let's just doo that and send a manned ship to Mars. Let's just go right now, to Mars.

Let's pretend like things like that don't have to be gradually worked up to.

What's wrong with people all of a sudden becoming fans of Nasa? Isn't that a good thing?

I'm appalled, to put it lightly, how short sighted some people can be.

I'd ask that people who don't care about this, not post in the thread, and leave it to the people that do care.

I wish the mods would let this die. Last word. If you're going to enter the SPACE AND ASTRONOMY THREAD, to tell others that nothing is gained by the space program or that it is a money sucking black hole? Hey, if you're gonna post factless stuff like that, and then be dealt with appropriately with... facts... have the thick skin to accept it and move on. Throwing around your authority on this isn't impressing anyone and is only making you look like bullies who don't like to be challenged. Let's all grow up and move on.

What you need to do it realize that what you think isn't Gospel and that you do not get to be a condescending jerk within any thread, we already removed you from one thread where you were nothing but a fire starter, I can see this soon becoming thread #2 for you.

Food for thought courtesy of Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson:

Americans spend more on lip balm yearly than the cost of sending a probe to Saturn.

Well, being from Houston, I am all for the Space Program....it is a huge part of our economy in Houston....so more power to them, and my hope is that the Space Program will be one that exceeds our expectations, and blows everyone else out of the water. Unfortunately right now, don't see that happening...but I'm hopeful.

Either the space program and science in general succeeds or our civilization collapses. In the next 100 years scientists expect our population to exceed 10 billion. Fossil fuels will not support that amount of people and our clean water supply will be put under great stress to support that amount of humans. Either we succeed and find a way to use the resources space offers, make fusion viable, or we run out of resources. We are reaching a tipping point where it will no longer be can we afford it or can we risk it. It will instead be we must and we have to. People need to educate themselves and recognize the fact that ours and the next generation very well could spell the fate of the generations for the forseeable future. Either we take the risk and make the next big step or we fail as a species. Adapt or die as the saying goes.

Yeah, and unfortunately, we are making Science irrelevant in our schools. Many schools around the country went to what is called a 4x4 graduation plan, where you had to have 4 Sciences, 4 Social Studies, 4 Math, and 4 ELA.... schools in states like California, because of the lack of money are looking at going to a different plan, and taking Sciences to 3 years of Science. Pretty much as basic as you can get with Science. It is ridiculous.

I'm sorry but the name of the thread is Space and Astronomy, and the poll question is "is it real?". Seriously? are there people who think space is a "hoax"?

Personally, if it was up to me science would take priority over sports in schools. That would be mandated and non negotiable. I understand the revenue sports brings in but schools in foriegn countries seem to do ok without sports. I find it ridiculous that something immeasurably important to our species survival and advancment is being pushed out of education. Then you have people wanting to take up time in science class to teach intelligent design. I have little problem with what anyone believes but saying "God did it." doesnt advance our knowledge in any beneficial way therefore i dont want it in the science classroom. Cut sports, fund science classes, and also fund more foreign language classes. I mean damn American children should at least be learning Spanish from elementary to college. Graduating highschool without being bilingual or having only a minimal amount of exposure to a foreign language is ridiculous. This mentaltiy of the world ending at Americas borders is absurd. Childen should not be raised to be culturally, linguistically, and scientifically ignorant.

Whatever it is we'll be able to kill it. Just think of all the stuff we've hunted to extinction down here on Earth, and then imagine what our high score could be once we reach the stars. :woot:

The ultimate challenge for a dedicated tow truck driver. Just HOW FAR are willing to go for the job? ::cues quest music::

IS this where we go to talk about Mars? Couldn't find any other threat

Anyway...on the topic of Mars...I am BLOWN AWAY by the panoramic image of the Martian landscape...seriously...My head is still putting itself back together. Awe-struck.

Then it got me wanting so much more...I would love to see a video stream of the landscape WITH SOUND. For some reason I am extremely curious to hear what Mars sounds like...could sound just like here, but who knows?

So, it seems we've got a really awesome meteor shower tonight. Anyone know the best part of the sky to watch for the central east coast of the US?

I'll be sure to watch the meteor shower tonight. I saw a few of them a couple of nights ago, it was pretty cool.

This just in

BUSH TO BOMB MOON

according to a press release.... bush has stated that the moon has terrorists hiding in it's craters... and since the moon isn't "with us".. then it must be against us....

Yeah,
we saw them come out in
Transformers: Dark of the Moon, didn't we?
