Spider-Man 3 Hype through the roof

They keep re airing the same Spider-Man 3 commercials over & over again during shows.

You could always post the article for peeps:

'Spider-Man 3' Tracking "Thru The Roof"! Black Spidey Looks Bigger Than 1 And 2

It's very early, still. But I'm told the first round of tracking for Spider-Man 3 is better than the first pulse that was registered for either Spidey 1 or 2 pics in this all-important Sony franchise. Remember: the first two had a combined worldwide theatrical gross of $1.6 billion: $821.7 million for Spider-Man 1 and $783.7 mil for Spider-Man 2. "The early awareness and indicators are through the roof," one box office guru told me.

Said another expert: "With so many other movies struggling for attention this year, SM3 came on [tracking] with over 90% awareness and over 20% first choice a month out." The big upside for Spider-Man 3, I'm told, is that moviergoers are responding like crazy to director Sam Raimi's dark and disturbing "Black Spidey" very cool iconography that characterizes the third installment along with its tag line "The Greatest Battle Lies Within." With great trailers, aggressive Internet and TV promotion, and a storyline which the other two films seemed to building towards, Spider-Man 3 should amass a $100+ million opening weekend in the United States beginning May 4th because, based on tracking, "the number is massive," I'm told. (SM1 had a $114 mil opening weekend and SM2 $88 mil.)

The new pic's release will be a global event. Spider-Man 3 will debut first in China before it officially opens in North America. Since commic book caper kicks off the 2007 summer movie season, this is clearly going to be a banner year at the box office -- probably the biggest in cinematic history -- given all the sequels, prequels and tentpole pics being released. (See my LA Weekly column Orgy Of Sequels Climaxing In 2007.) There's one downside:

Wall Street film financing experts tell me that, based on SM3's budget, it may well be the most expensive film ever made. Sony privately is admitting to a budget of $250 mil, but analysts tell me it's more like $300+ mil. And that's even without the promotion and advertising costs which are said to be another $75+ mil. (The previous $$$ record-holder is Warner's remake of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory which cost about $272 mil, analysts say.) That being said, the Spider-Man franchise is a cash machine for Sony. For instance, its Culver Entertainment TV shingle will launch The Amazing Spider-Man 'toon sometime in early 2008 on the CW network's Saturday morning kids' block). That's why the screenplay is already underway for Spider-Man 4.

On the other hand, SM3 is opening during a very competitive May with hotter rivalry than faced SM1 and SM2. That's because DreamWorks Animation's Shrek The Third opens May 18th and P3 (Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End) debuts May 25th. Disney has said that P3 will be in every territory in the world by that date, although perhaps not mainland China where censors were viewing a print hand-delivered by Disney execs so as to avoid piracy.

But Spider-man 3 has already snagged China. The reason for SM3's opening there before the U.S. debut is so pirated copies don't have a chance to flood the market beforehand. Anyway, that's the peak moviegoing season in China around the weeklong national holiday that kicks off May 1. Sony also is holding a Tokyo premiere.

ok sorry but I wanted to ask this for some time (well, since threads about this competition started to emerge), but why is it such important for some of you, for Spidey 3 to be the best movie of this summer, are you one of the producers or something? Well because we don't own Sony anything, the opposite is more true. It's because fans kept the Spidey comics alive that this movies are being made, I don't think we own it a favor. now don't get me wrong, I, as all of you, want to see this movie, but I think that our individual experience of the movie is more important than box office gross (and personnaly, I'm going to see Spidey 3, Shrek 3 and pirates 3), if you see a movie and you find it was crap, even if it grossed 2 billion dollars and it's the most successful movie aff all times with hundreds of oscars, golden globes or whatever, wouldn't it still be crap for you and still think you wasted your time and money on a film you didn't like ?

I hope you understand what I'm talking about, what I just said above it's only MY opinion. I'm not judging anybody, I just want to understand why this is so important to you.

Long life to SHH !!

edit: left some errors of sentence, for those of you who care, I don't speak english fluently, sorry about this pointless edit note lol.

Well... I had this kind of discussion about a favorite band and why you want them to have success and to sell records. I think the answer to your question is because if you like something, you want it to have a success, because you think it deserves it. Forget Sony, Im talking more about fans, not-fans to get interested in all this hype, the filmmakers who put so much and all the hardwork from the people behind cameras.
Think about something (perhaps someone too) you really like, and why is it important to you for it to accomplish something. Is because you like it, and you care.

but I think that our individual experience of the movie is more important than box office gross
You're right. It's the personal experience what matters. But think beyond that. There might not be a fourth movie if the box office gross isn't bigger than the previous 2 films (something I highly doubt)

So perhaps people in this forum want it to be succesful for all the reasons I posted above.

Hope I was clear with my opinion, and that it was helpful :woot:

D!

I want it to be successful because that will keep the future of the franchise alive. also, it validates my spider-man fandom. wouldn't you want your favorite sport team to win championships? if they didn't, people would think you're a fool for liking the team.
also, bragging rights.

I see what you're saying, but the main reason why I care about how this movie does is just that I've dedicated so much time anticipating its arrival. It feels like a reward if the movie you've highly anticipated breaks records for popularity. But I do agree with you that it turning out to be good movie is much more important.

BTW, don't worry about you're English, you're on Spider-Man hype. :cwink:

I'm not the least bit surprised by this . Heck Here in NYC the hype for Spidey 3 is mega high (Their wasn't this much hype for SR last year or BB the other year in NYC.) I've never seen so many New Yorkers excited to see superhero film than with The Spidey movies . Heck today I grab a cab , and the cabbie had a bobble head from spidey 2 on his dashboard . The Cabbie said it was his son's, I just happen to have the novel with me at the time and we broke out into a conversation about Spidey and that yes he and his son are very excited to see spidey 3 on opening day.

Why do we care if it fails or suceedes?

Well, I know I care because I have stock with them, so if this movie makes it huge, it's going to go up, but if it bombs, then it's going to go down...

Also...

I have no idea what that means, but it apparently it's "phenominal". :p
haha, thats funny:woot:

reminds me of that commercial with jessica simpson where she says "i totally have no idea what that is....but i want it"

Shogunrua, I agree with what you are saying and am also going to see those three movies. I am a huge Spider-Man fan, but, personally, I think this one is going to be the worst of the three for a number of reasons,
(Sandman being Uncle Ben's killer, a wimpy Venom, 'The New Goblin'...).
However, I still want to see it to give the movie a fair chance.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done!

Animated Spider-Man of the 90s

Nope this is going to be the BEST of the three without a doubt.

Spider-Man 3 has a more involving plot than S3. Although S3 is really going to be good, got my hands on that novelization as well- ALOT more focus on fairy tales rather than pop culture.

And unlike POTC 3 (judging off of POTC 2), SM3 actually has a plot.

SM 3> S3 > POTC 3

I really can't wait to see the hype build on this more and more. It's just going to blow up and I can imagine it's going to be nothing but Spider-Man for 2 weeks solid. I can't wait to see 7 screens sold out at theaters and the millions of fans... ahhhh wooo SM3!!! :spidey:

I'm almost glad I'm going to be out of town on opening weekend, because it's probably going to be sold out.

See, when sm2 was in production, there were a lot of things that upset me, there was too much repetition of the mediocrity that plagued the first spidey movie BUT I always declared that sm3 would be THE spider-man movie I've been waiting for...why? I don't know, I just did.
Now, I still reckon that although sm3 will perform brilliantly at the BO (thats a given) it wont be the BO summer champion, why? Because things like this always happen. Maybe its a stupid reason but whatever, it always happens. For some strage reason, many of these crappy animated movies seem to garner a huge BO draw and critical acclaim. I enjoyed both shrek movies but they weren't THAT great. Something tells me that shrek 3 is going to be the darkhorse of the summer. Also, the other competition are really going to bring it. Think what you will of POTC but you'd be a fool to think its not a threat but anyway...I'm really not into all this money-making comparisons, I just want a damn good spidey film...which I'm yet to recieve and sm3 LOOKS (I'm not saying that it will) like it'll deliver.
However, when it comes to these spidey movies, sony are hype ****es. The same marketing tactics were used with the previous movies, the only noticable difference from my perspective is, this time there's a lot more going on for this film, change of pace (for the better) and there seems to be a greater potential of the quality of drama which was one of the reasons why I rate sm1&2 so low.

"Shrek the third" and "Pirates 3" are both HUGE threads to "SM-3!"... But the same can be said the other way around! I for the life of me dont understand why the Shrek-flicks could EVER have become a huge thread to real life HUGE movie's like Spidey or even (God forbid!) Pirates!....

"TRANSFORMERS" would've been a big thread too, but luckily enough it doesn't come out until July 4'th, so that one is out of the equation! I do think that "Die Hard 4.0" will suffer great defeat because "TransFormers" premiers a small week after; but we'll see!

I really dont know which movie will come out on top this year, it's difficult to say!!! I for one was EXSTREMELY surprised and SAD that "Superman Returns" wasn't the cash-cow Warners had hoped for! That was too bad:(

I´m smelling some record-breaking yet again... It is important that the movie performs really great, one, so we can see if Raimi, Maguire and the rest of the gang want to make another one, second, to show that superhero movies continue to be a strong bet in spite of the occasional disappointment.

I believe the movie of the summer will either be SM3(hopefully) or POTC3. Maybe it's just in my demographic, but I have seen no TV spots for Shrek 3 and saw only one trailer at the movies which no one even laughed at. SM3 should have the biggest opening weekend of the year since no other big movies are out at the time and POTC 3 will have S3 and SM3 which will take up a lot of theaters.

They say this movie is tracking like crazy...90% recognizable, or something.

That's a real good sign, man. :word: :spidey:

bringing my grain of salt in this debate. (Even if it's not important for me) I think Spider-man 3 has more aces in his sleeve than Pirates 3. First, even if it's a sequel, it's not a DIRECT follow-up of the story (which Pirates 3 is), if you know what I mean. So people who didn't like Spidey 1 or 2 (and I think there are some people in here in this situation) can still see Spidey 3 with a relative open mind. But I think people who didn't like Pirates 2 will go see Pirates 3, because it's the very same story. Some people might argue that "hey Spidey is a comic book character, only geeks, with the face so full of spots that they look like pizzas, are going to see it" but the overall gross proved us that the films are more accessible to the mainstream audience than the comic book (personnaly I admit I started reading the Spidey comics because of the first movie, and it was not easy at all to understand what was going on), so it's not a point of concern at all. But I when Pirates will come to theaters, the frequentation rate of Spidey will drop I think.

Yet if we see the whole trilogy, no matter what she's already successefull enough, in order not to make Spidey 3 results matter. Let me explain my point of view. I read somewhere that for a movie to be a success, he has to make the double of it's budget. The budget of Spidey 1 is (according to wikipedia) 140 mio dollars. Spidey 2 200 mio dollars, and Spidey 3..well lets take the 300 mio dollars. So, with the basic rule I mentionned above, for the overall trilogy to be a success, the trilogy should make (140+200+300) x 2= 1.36 billion dollars, a sum which has already been topped with just the two first movies. So no matter what happens to Spidey 3, the franchise will go on I think. (well if I'm aware there's more factors to be studied to really make a judgement like that, and I still might be wrong about that "box office rule" I mentionned, wich will make all what I said above just plain bulls**t lol)

Anyway, if we can take the article seriously, there's no reason to believe that Spidey 3 will bomb. It's not like it was when "Dominion: prequel to the exorcist" had to compet against "Revenge of the SIth" both released the same week end lol. There's no need to worry people.

(Btw I wanted to thank those who responded to me in my first reply in this topic. I have to admit I didn't consider the points you brought, and I understand them. Thank you)

I just have wanted to wait for TEH right time to say this aloud cause I dont know to many people into films like myself, but you guys.

Do you all think P3 is just bagging on its name for a huge box office? Look how long it took to get a teaser trailer out there. Theres no Trailer, theres no tv spots, theres just a One Sheet. Its almost friggin May and this comes out in the last week of May. Spidey has been promoting like crazy since June of 06. Exceptional work on Sonys part, cause SPidey is kicking Pirates ass.

Pirates is still fresh in the mind of the mainstream market since the previous movie came out last summer so they can afford to not show the trailer until now. SM2 came out three years ago so they had to tease the crap out of this movie because the mainstream audience "forgot" about the franchise. This is one reason why I think Shrek 3 won't be as big as POTC3 or SM3, the last Shrek movie came out a few years ago so the buzz created from the movie faded and their studio has done little promotion to creat the buzz.
