Spider-Man: Brand New Day General News and Discussion Thread

Let's hope 4th time's the charm.

No Way Home was a fun nostalgic ride and even managed to have some stakes. Homecoming and Far From Home both were nice enough and had cool stuff in them, but none of the MCU Spider-Man movies have been truly home runs.

I'd like to see them at least attempt to make something as good as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 1 & 2.
I fully expect it to be the worst MCU Spider-Man film with Disney and Sony capitalising all the multiverse and/or symbiote nonsense and shoehorning stuff in.

It’s currently scheduled to release between Doomsday and Secret Wars. Good for the money halo effect to be sandwiched in-between, potentially bad for storytelling if has to deal with that time period, multiverse shenanigans, and non-Spider-Man things. Destin still did a good job with Shang-Chi and he still had to deal with other small stuff like the return of Trevor (fake Mandarin).

I think we knew by now that the Kingpin/DD movie was dead. Just a matter on if this is a Venom/Spider-Man movie or something else now

I just don't think Sony is willing to have a villain ,that they don't solely own , headline a Spiderman film .

I could see RDJ's Doom playing a role in the film, but I doubt Sony would have him or another Marvel/ Disney owned character, be the main villain .

So , the films villains or villains of Spiderman 4 , are likely to be owned by Sony exclusively as opposed to a character like Kingpin .

I also don't think Sony would ever choose have Daredevil over having Andrew, Tobey, or Venom in the the film .

Maybe not NWH level, but it's gonna be a billion dollar movie. FFH was and so was NWH, and yeah Marvel is taking hits recently, but Spider-Man has been one of their consistent money makers. I am sure The Oddyssey will do great. Oppenheimer did well despite being out at the same time as Barbie. But I think it's clear which is #1 and which is #2

I tend to agree but there is a lengthier gap between NWH & Spidey 4 than previous installments, plus the general audience fatigue we're seeing for both MCU and especially Sony films--both in box office and critical reception.

Maybe Spidey is immune to bad press, but we've seen Spider-Man films under-perform before.

I'm interested to see how good, mid or bad a MCU Spider-Man film that would score lower than 90% in Rotten Tomatoes.

I just realized Shang-Chi was also on the 90s. So who knows? I would like to be surprised.

I've said it before, but I hope Marvel seriously considers an option where their new universe does not include Spider-Man as a part of it. This worked out great prior to Civil War.

Sony see's blood in the water and are exercising their leverage. I don't blame them one bit, there is nothing special or awe inspiring about Marvel Studios. Sadly though, Marvel may still have the high ground creatively because Sony have been much worse left to their own devices the last decade. It's amusing from that perspective because it's a battle of witless wonders.

What leverage does Sony have? Their shared Spider-Man universe fell on its face. The Venom franchise is over. The Into The Spider-Verse 3rd movie is not anywhere close to coming out anytime soon even though the second one ended on a cliffhanger. Sony is a mess. Far worse of a mess than Marvel Studios is.

But Tom Holland is the most well liked actor in a role they have, so I think he is immune

Maybe. Or he and Zendaya could break up and the world turns on him lol. We're fickle with our celebrities.

And if people start thinking everything's getting reset a year later in Secret Wars, maybe there will be a sense of "what's the point?" and we'll see that reflected in BO returns.

But that's a lot of maybes.

The leverage is owning the rights to the biggest comic book character in the world.

With the sobbering realisation of failure, an opportunity presents itself to reset and go after the best talent in the industry to turn it around, something Marvel Studios would never do with Feige around.

I agree they squandered it, but that's because the people behind the scenes are even less impressive than Feige and his lame counsel.

Of course this is best case optimism, but the alternative is continuing the dance of mediocrity since it started in 2017.

If they see this as an opportunity, they could turn it all around in short order.

I mean, the mainline Spider-Man movies were actually declining in box office before Marvel and Sony partnered up. Marvel reversed that trend, with two out of the three Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland breaking into the billion dollar club.

So does Sony want to lose that? Because I can see Kevin Feige making that argument to them.

I dont think either side has leverage, honestly. Sony tarnished their brand with these awful spinoffs, but take out Tom Holland and who does the MCU really have to build around? At This point, they got Deadpool and Hugh Jackman ain't getting any younger Wolverine. That's basically it. So I don't think they can afford to lose their most popular character in universe at this point

True, but this universe is on a 3-4 year leash anyway. I think its all smoke and mirrors until after 2028 with the reset and we see what that looks like.

Whatever they planned initially after Secret Wars surely has to be changing by the day because the studio is clearly out of step with the audience and each new failure cements that point.

As much as I want the Fantasic Four to succeed, that should have been the first film, or First Steps, into a fully new MCU. The idea of them rubbing shoulders with Falcon Cap, or maybe even Jackman's Wolverine in the "new" universe, does little to excite me.

Honestly, I am not expecting much from the new MCU, but it seems like its the best thing we've got to look forward to at this point, beyond individual projects in a vacuum like Fantastic Four. In the bigger picture, the potential of not screwing up the reboot (and possibly realising a full reboot is needed) is still more hopeful than what we currently have now.

Anything can be managed into the ground, see Star Wars.

If I'm a fan of Spider-Man and I don't like Dan Slott for example, or I don't like an editorial policy that hurts the characters legacy, I'm not going to buy that book. It doesn't mean I won't return at some point. For some maybe, but the majority would be back with the right leadership and creatives at the helm.

Sony has an advantage that Marvel Studios doesn't, which I think is potentially attracting top talent in the industry. If you work for Marvel Studios you work under Feige and his house-style, producer-driven approach. If you work for Sony, they can sell creative control and the idea of not being antithetical (like Marvel Studios) to the traditional creative approach.

I would be fine if future MCU doesn't have Spider-Man. Marvel Studios was doing fine pre-Civil War, and they would be fine again if Marvel Studios can re-focus on fewer projects.

I don't know how stressful the relationship between Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony is, but I bet it isn't easy and there must be lot of compromises behind the scenes. The fact that their partnership have lasted this long is also shocking.

At this point, all I want from Spider-Man in the MCU is for the three Spider-Men to appear in Secret Wars.

The only part of this movie that is keeping me optimistic is Destin Daniel Cretton. The action/chroreography in Shang-Chi was superb. I can only imagine what he can do with Spider-Man.
Other than that, this whole thing sounds like a mess of ideas.

All the rumors have been very messy and they have the temptation to make this Avengers 5.5 with Spider-Man along for the ride again.

If its multiverse heavy, I would love it if Nicholas Cage appears both as Spider-Noir and Ghost Rider.
