Spider-Man: Brand New Day General News and Discussion Thread

Yeah like it's been said we shall see what ends up on the big-screen but by all measures I'm comfortably calling this the best Spider-man suit we've gotten in live-action.

Everything else looks and sounds (surprisingly) promising so far. Punisher and the Hulk could really add a lot, some practical action, a rumored more serious tone (which fits in line with what they teased at the end of NWH).... this just might wash the taste of FFH from my mouth :o

Currently reading Bendis Ultimate Spider-Man and its been making me want to revisit the MCU Spidey movies. I will probably warm up to Homecoming despite the problems I had with it when I first saw it. FFH I don’t plan to watch again because I just hated the whole plot and premise (it’s pretty fresh in my mind). NWH was pretty good when I first watched it but not so sure how it’ll hold up.

My two cents:
- Homecoming, warts and all, is really good Spider-man movie and a breath of fresh air for the MCU. It's aged really well as a street level, high school drama that nails the character and his little corner of the universe. CGI is a weak spot in several moments but I can easily look past that
- Far from Home has some great moments (namely Mysterio) but doesn't work overall, the Europe setting really drags down the whole thing and the high school antics/jokes start to wear thin for me
- No Way Home I really like but I've come down from the sugar high of seeing it in theaters. Doesn't hold up as much on the rewatch. It really is all about getting the 3 Spider-men together and the MVP of it really is Andrew Garfield. He comes in halfway through and is just sinking 3's the whole time.

I guess I will be the FFH defender here, cause I love that movie. It isn't perfect and the core plot of Stark giving Peter drones is dumb. Dumb dumb dumb. Why would that ever happen? But...Mysterio is just so well executed that....I don't care lol! Also the fake news stuff has aged like wine in the current climate

My 4K of Homecoming arrives in the mail today so I’m looking forward to revisiting it. I really don’t like this whole Multiverse saga (among other reasons) for derailing street level Spidey. I really hope BND gives us that.

Agreed. I've never liked the multiverse stuff as more than a one-off gimmick here and there (both in the comics and movies) and this recent phase of the MCU has not done anything to change my mind there.

I think the Multiverse in the MCU is intriguing, and I can't wait to see the full story in Doomsday and Secret Wars.

IMO, the Watts trilogy got worse with each movie. Homecoming was awesome; I could have taken two more just like it.

Far From Home still had the charm of the first one but it's always 50/50 with Fury in the MCU--he's either gritty like TWS or he's Snakes on a Plane Sam Jackson. Unfortunately FFH went with the latter take and it didn't help that the crux of the plot (Tony gives Peter military drones as his inheritance?) was weak and we're only given facsimiles of Hydro Man, Molten Man, and Sand Man. And No Way Home was so self-referential and messy and miles beneath what Sony was doing over in their animated Spider-Verse.

Fingers crossed this one harkens back to Homecoming

I like FFH. The general idea of Peter grappling with wanting a fun vacation and being Spider-Man is a fun and perfect. Plus yeah, Myserio is top notch.

I think it's biggest issue is that it's really more of a sequel to the Avengers films than it is to Homecoming which leads to a lot of awkward choices. Some of which you could navigate if they didn't choose the really weird ways of handling it. The drones stuff is so bizarre and didn't need to be there at all.

I don’t know if these writers with Kevin’s (and the list of other producers) heavy hand are capable of excellence like on Raimi’s movies. The female roles have also been undercooked and underutilized.

My average star rating across the three previous movies is 3.7 stars out of 5. Which to be fair is still higher than TASM’s average.

Destin was a credited co-writer on Shang-Chi but there’s been no indication that is also the going to be the case on Brand New Day yet. Despite some criticism, the three female roles in Shang-Chi all at least had something to do - way more than any of these past Spider-Man movies.

The script is probably still in flux just like all their other projects too to an extent even if they have the characters figured out.

Is it me or does do the practical swinging shots look neat? I recall Watts describing them as looking "dumb".
