Into the Spider-Verse Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse News and General Discussion Thread

74/0! Pretty solid!
I think what is more impressive than all the good reviews is exactly HOW good all the reviews are. They are like, exceedingly positive. We are at a solid 9/10 rating right now. Honestly, if it doesn't gross a lot, at least we've got a solid, well-respected film. I mean, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm made next to nothing in the theaters, but that doesn't diminish its quality!
I hope this film has a stellar opening weekend with some long legs. I know the December movies are dense, but I think this one can stand out.

I'm starting to see the differences in the animation style of Peter and Gwen.

in Gwen’s World (there’s the title for her spin-off), Clone High wasn’t cancelled :wow:

Glad you had a good time!

At this time how would you rank it along the Spidey films?

Well, Spider-Man: Homecoming is my personal favourite, that’s the best Spidey film to me (make of that what you will lol) but I gotta say that this is now equal first with it, it really is that good. Enjoyment levels especially.

I saw it in 2D so I’m definitely gonna give it a 2nd viewing in 3D

Seeing this tonight at 7pm. Will let ya know what I think later.

Homecoming is great, man!
Right now, my favorite Spidey movie goes between Spider-man 2 and Homecoming, depending on my mood. That may change next weekend after I see this movie, though!

Haha what's up with the billboard for MTV'S Clone High cartoon behind Gwen when she lands in Miles' universe? There's Abe and JFK from that show, must be the universe where that went on to be a big hit.

Copying and pasting my review from Instagram, so please forgive the hashtags lol.

Time for my review of #SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse. First of all, why was I so hyped about this film? Well, simply put, I’ve been a fan of #MilesMorales since his intro. I mean a black #SpiderMan ? Relatable AF lol (yes, I know he has Hispanic heritage too). Being told as a kid “you can’t be Spider-Man, he’s white” makes you think when looking back in hindsight. The comics had Spider-People of different races and genders but a black one was overdue and damn right I attached to that lol, it was fully justified. He’s a legacy character that became a mainstay and is an awesome & popular character in his own right. But enough of the history lesson, on to the film itself. The animation is great but, I gotta be honest, I think people are overhyping it. It’s definitely stuff we’ve seen before, just not on that scale, that budget or that long period of time (I’ll elaborate this point further later on). I went to a 2D showing last night, even though the film is rendered in 3D and is best viewed in that format, so that’s more than likely why I didn’t get the full immersive experience that people are hyping about. The characters though, there’s a spider-person for everybody in this, pretty sure there’ll be a character that people will cling to more for one reason or another.

Obviously, you can’t have a #SpiderMan film without the OG #Spidey himself, #PeterParker. I really liked the energy and smarts the Spidey of Miles’ universe displayed. Was surprised at who they got to voice him too, he actually did really well with the little that he had. The older Peter (featured prominently in trailers and promotional material) has some of the best lines, comedic timing an delivery was on point! #SpiderGwen was cool, she came across as a likeable character and it was good to see her hold her own as well. Ultimately though, make no mistake, this is #MilesMorales’ movie. He had some great moments, comedically and emotionally. It was good that the film never lost its focus on him. In terms of comedy though, I could say that about any of them, the humour was on point, #SpiderManNoir had me laughing so much. Speaking of the other spiders, I liked the character intros and origins we were given to each one. #PeniParker, #SpiderHam and Spider-Man Noir’s origins are quick but it was enough backstory. In terms of superheroes, they say a hero is only as good as their villains and boy do we have some villains! #TheProwler was probably my favourite villain in this, he had some great action scenes. Plus if you read the comics, you knew where this was heading but they played it well. #TheKingpin was physically intimidating to the others and is, well, the Kingpin lol, main villain after all. There was one surprise villain though, let’s just say that...

The final battle, visually, is stunning, I really liked what they were doing and where they were going with it. The animation was good, loved the blends of colours. There’s more to say but it would be entering spoiler territory. Honestly, this film is the real deal. I even lowered my expectations before I went in but it lived up to them and then some. The #SpiderMan references (even the obscure ones), the characterisations, the action, it really was a blast. “Where are these blasphemous comments you were talking about?” Well, how good is this film? Put it this way - Coco is lucky it was released last year, or should that be lucky that #IntoTheSpiderVerse was released this year, otherwise it wouldn’t have won the Best Animated Feature Oscar. If this were a Disney film, it would be challenging Big Hero 6 as my favourite. In terms of #Spidey films, I would place it equal first with Spider-Man: Homecoming, could even challenge for top spot after a rewatch. For 2018, it’s a worthy challenger to Avengers: Infinity War as my film of the year and, in terms of animated films in general, it’s up there as a worthy contender to mix it up with the “God-tier” level of Pixar films - yes, we’re talking Toy Story trilogy, Up, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Monsters Inc level of greatness. So, how good is this film? Yeah, it’s that good. Put it this way, there’s a reason - well, lots of reasons - why, as of this post, it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 9/10, which is the highest score for a superhero movie, dethroning The Dark Knight’s 8.6 average. Like I said, my boy Miles did good! Definitely watching this again but in 3D. Oh yeah, the post-credit scene is worth the price of admission alone. This better get an Oscar nomination or else I’ll be annoyed. Disney films have rightly won a streak of animated features recently but this could potentially end that run. I give this a solid 9 thwips out of 10

Bold is the bit I wanted to add on insta but ran out of space lol.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Lord & Miller and their crew has done it again, I absolutely loved every minute of it. They did a fantastic job not only introducing the multiverse storyline, but also giving Miles Morales his much deserved origin story. Right off the bat, you are wowed by the animation and the different animation styles that constantly clash and create something you've never seen before on film. And when the animation really gets going during the action scenes, it's pretty much like taking LSD while reading a comic book. While it's called Spider-verse, the majority of the movie is about Miles Morales and they were able to streamline his comic origin into one movie smoothly. Shameik Moore did a great job voicing Miles. And as for the other Spider-men/women/pig, they were all great and they all had their moments to shine like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Pig, and Peni Parker. However, the two that probably stole the movie for me was Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir and more importantly Jake Johnson as a version of Peter Parker who is ultimately the backbone of the movie. As for the humor, it's very similar to The Lego Batman movie in which a lot of it is inside jokes, but there's enough for anyone who's new to Spider-Man can still enjoy it. The movie also gets to be serious and have complex themes like any other great live action superhero movie. The Stan Lee cameo in here might be the most poetic one thus far especially because it's Spider-Man. If I have any complaints it would be that the villains weren't as developed (which is probably on purpose), but I can forgive it because what we got instead. Overall, it's pretty much perfect. This is a 2 hour animated movie that leave you wanting more. It's a Spider-Man movie that not only celebrates its history, but creates it's own. Also, do not miss any of the post credit scenes. The very last one is by far the best one I've seen since Cap showing up at the end of Homecoming.
10/10

Wow. Saw this last night, and it is definitely as awesome as everyone is saying. Never seen an animated film like it. The energy and creativeness are just insane and the humor delivers with every joke. Don't see many Spidey fans walking out of this disappointed even if you're a 616 or nothing person. Pretty much delivers on every level. The Hype is legit!

9.5/10

As mentioned by other posters the villain could have been more developed but I don't think it hurts this as a whole. The focus on Peter and Miles relationship is what makes this film work so much from a narrative standpoint and the pacing was top notch.

The only disappointing thing for me is Spider-Gwen. I remember reading Edge of Spider-Verse #2 and being very impressed with what they did in that issue. After that though, I can't say much outside of her having a really good design and....

In this film I felt the same, she looks/acts cool but pretty much is here just as a potential love interest. Was hoping she would have some stronger moments and stand out on her own more. Hopefully that Spider-Woman film will change my opinion.

The fact she is still a version of Gwen Stacy and not much is mentioned with her and Parker also just feels off given how crucial Gwen is in Spider-Mans history. I think the film did the right thing by having Parker not even be connected to (or at least mention) her from his Universe, but she still knows Parker from hers and not much is said. So it feels just off knowing the history. Making her a potential love interest for Miles also just seems wrong/awkward to me be it comics or film. Let him have a love interest that is not connected to Parker and create some new characters for him to interact with. Not that I even want Gwen back with any version of Parker (MJ always), but having your apprentice/successor interested in an alternate younger version of the the girl you were in love with, couldn't save and basically changed the person you are just seems poorly thought out and weird. The Death of Gwen is a storyline line that is just too difficult to ignore even if this film tries to.

I legitimately cannot wait to see this. Hoping for the film to be the loveletter to the character of Spider-Man that it appears to be. A Batman Brave and the Bold for Spider-Man if you will. Specifically, how Brave and the Bold had so many comic accurate elements and homages to the source material. As well as being a love letter to the character and his history.

Ugh. There always has to be that one guy.

Still hoping this beats Black Panther for highest rated comic book movie.

Solid run, 80 reviews before the 81st was rotten.

I was starting to think it wouldn't get a rotten one ever lol but yeah crazy. I have been wondering how long it would take for like the last week.

A good thing in the end. I don't know how comfortable I'd be if this were sitting at 100% for a long time.. You know how some folks are on the internet, a perfect rating on RT (even if it's not the avg.score) would definitely make it a target. :o
