Time for my review of #SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse. First of all, why was I so hyped about this film? Well, simply put, I’ve been a fan of #MilesMorales since his intro. I mean a black #SpiderMan ? Relatable AF lol (yes, I know he has Hispanic heritage too). Being told as a kid “you can’t be Spider-Man, he’s white” makes you think when looking back in hindsight. The comics had Spider-People of different races and genders but a black one was overdue and damn right I attached to that lol, it was fully justified. He’s a legacy character that became a mainstay and is an awesome & popular character in his own right. But enough of the history lesson, on to the film itself. The animation is great but, I gotta be honest, I think people are overhyping it. It’s definitely stuff we’ve seen before, just not on that scale, that budget or that long period of time (I’ll elaborate this point further later on). I went to a 2D showing last night, even though the film is rendered in 3D and is best viewed in that format, so that’s more than likely why I didn’t get the full immersive experience that people are hyping about. The characters though, there’s a spider-person for everybody in this, pretty sure there’ll be a character that people will cling to more for one reason or another.
Obviously, you can’t have a #SpiderMan film without the OG #Spidey himself, #PeterParker. I really liked the energy and smarts the Spidey of Miles’ universe displayed. Was surprised at who they got to voice him too, he actually did really well with the little that he had. The older Peter (featured prominently in trailers and promotional material) has some of the best lines, comedic timing an delivery was on point! #SpiderGwen was cool, she came across as a likeable character and it was good to see her hold her own as well. Ultimately though, make no mistake, this is #MilesMorales’ movie. He had some great moments, comedically and emotionally. It was good that the film never lost its focus on him. In terms of comedy though, I could say that about any of them, the humour was on point, #SpiderManNoir had me laughing so much. Speaking of the other spiders, I liked the character intros and origins we were given to each one. #PeniParker, #SpiderHam and Spider-Man Noir’s origins are quick but it was enough backstory. In terms of superheroes, they say a hero is only as good as their villains and boy do we have some villains! #TheProwler was probably my favourite villain in this, he had some great action scenes. Plus if you read the comics, you knew where this was heading but they played it well. #TheKingpin was physically intimidating to the others and is, well, the Kingpin lol, main villain after all. There was one surprise villain though, let’s just say that...
The final battle, visually, is stunning, I really liked what they were doing and where they were going with it. The animation was good, loved the blends of colours. There’s more to say but it would be entering spoiler territory. Honestly, this film is the real deal. I even lowered my expectations before I went in but it lived up to them and then some. The #SpiderMan references (even the obscure ones), the characterisations, the action, it really was a blast. “Where are these blasphemous comments you were talking about?” Well, how good is this film? Put it this way - Coco is lucky it was released last year, or should that be lucky that #IntoTheSpiderVerse was released this year, otherwise it wouldn’t have won the Best Animated Feature Oscar. If this were a Disney film, it would be challenging Big Hero 6 as my favourite. In terms of #Spidey films, I would place it equal first with Spider-Man: Homecoming, could even challenge for top spot after a rewatch. For 2018, it’s a worthy challenger to Avengers: Infinity War as my film of the year and, in terms of animated films in general, it’s up there as a worthy contender to mix it up with the “God-tier” level of Pixar films - yes, we’re talking Toy Story trilogy, Up, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Monsters Inc level of greatness. So, how good is this film? Yeah, it’s that good. Put it this way, there’s a reason - well, lots of reasons - why, as of this post, it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 9/10, which is the highest score for a superhero movie, dethroning The Dark Knight’s 8.6 average. Like I said, my boy Miles did good! Definitely watching this again but in 3D. Oh yeah, the post-credit scene is worth the price of admission alone. This better get an Oscar nomination or else I’ll be annoyed. Disney films have rightly won a streak of animated features recently but this could potentially end that run. I give this a solid 9 thwips out of 10
Bold is the bit I wanted to add on insta but ran out of space lol.
