Surprise Of The Year: Sony Animation's 'Spider-Man' Has Emerged As Oscar Frontrunner

Honestly, if Spider-Man becomes the first comic character to win an Oscar for best animated feature (I don't count BH6, although I love it), that would be insanely awesome.

Unless, you know, the academy doesn't even nominate it. Like they did when the Lego movie was a clear front runner.

Seems like there’s a decent chance.

Devil's advocate for BH6 not getting nominated, it doesn't do anything innovative with regards to animation. Doesn't push the envelope in any way (even though it is an excellent movie).

I was talking about Lego movie not getting nominated. Big Hero 6 won. (sorry. should have phrased that better)

Lego movie not getting nominated is a bit of farse. Okay, my hopes of SM:ITSV taking the Oscar has taken a hit. Looks like Disney/Pixar hold a monopoly.

That's my fear. I think there has maybe been twice when they didn't win in the past decade. MAYBE. I'd have to look. Lego movie was the big WTF moment. I mean, the movie received critical praise, made tons of money, and it was different than the Pixar/Dreamworks fare that we see every year. I'm NOT hating on Disney/Pixar, they make GREAT stuff, but their needs to be something said for films like Kubo, where they don't win, yet they try something different and beautiful. If the only goal for animation is to look as realistic as possible, then I think they have lost sight of what makes the medium beautiful in the first place, in my opinion.

That is also why I don't put much stock in awards shows. When best film went to "Life of Pi" that one year, I looked up and said, "really?" RARELY is the best picture a film that anyone watches more than once.

Hopefully, this movie takes the Oscar as it's like nothing you've ever seen. Creativity and inventiveness should be rewarded or movie studios will stop taking risks. Is it any wonder that EVERYTHING now looks like Disney and Pixar when they have a complete monopoly and nothing else is recognized? Why bother to do anything different?

Exactly. I get that Pixar is THE best at CG animation. They should be! They've been doing it for awhile now! They make complete worlds that are just amazing! However, now Disney studios doesn't even do classical animation. It's CG, too. :(

125 reviews in on RT and still sitting at 99%.

Also, I read a glowing review from The Atlantic...cannot wait to see this.

I'm not able to see this opening weekend unfortunately but I'm definitely going next weekend.

haha, the guy who famously called The Force Awakens a "glib facsimile" is the lone rotten review

I expect Armond won't be far behind with #2

That lone rotten review is infuriating.

Don't worry, some pretentious snob will be along shortly. That, or maybe that will be the lone rotten review, and he can get all the attention for himself.

And he still won't be happy.

Spoke too soon. Pretentious snob #2 has arisen with another negative...from some guy to whose website I think you have to subscribe to read. Meh. His opinion will affect no one. A few dozen more positives (which should easily happen), and his review won't matter.

Another rotten. 98%.

These grinches are getting s*** for Christmas:funny:

But I'm seeing it tomorrow. Can't wait.

Watched it yesterday. What a great film. Don't really want to talk about it in case I spoil something.

I really hope the box office matches the quality of this film. If the minion movies can make a billion Spiderverse has more than a good chance.

I'll be surprised if this movie makes more than 600m worldwide. Competition is a big reason for that.

I'm optimistic. Realistically, 600 million is a pretty feasible number. However, if this ends up getting Black Panther level buzz (and the reviews are as good as BP), and you factor in Spider-man, plus the fact that it is a PG movie, which means not worrying about your kids hearing anything even remotely off-kilter. Also people forget that Miles is a child of two non-white cultures, which means there is two minority groups will have representation in the form of the most popular hero of the last 20 years.

I wouldn't count Spidey out. If the comics have taught us nothing, that should be one big thing: never count Spidey out!

My flabber will be gasted if this movie makes more than 500m. I don't see it. The big animation numbers are almost exclusively reserved for Disney and Pixar.

Ah! But if Illumination and Dreamworks can pull in decent numbers with new properties like Secret Life of Pets and Trolls, then I think Spidey can do it.
That being said, I would rather have a SOLID and AWESOME movie than to have a Transformers/Fast & Furious brain-dead pic that makes a billion plus worldwide.
Of course, if it does both, then that's fine, too.

And with that, the problem is that the GA tends to go see the mind-numbing stuff. Aquaman may bring in 800 million worldwide, and it's about...Aquaman. But, it' purdy and loud and stuff. (Just using it for an example. I will probably see it, too because, you know, comics)
