To put what I said above more succinctly about his competence fluctuating depending on whether he's being directed by Jon Watts or the Russos:

In Civil War he holds his own in an all-out superhero brew-ha where he fights Winter Soldier, Falcon, Captain America, and Giant-Man.

Then in Homecoming he can barely hold his own against Vulture who, while he's cool and all, isn't up to the level of any of those people in powers or abilities or even just fighting skills. He's a middle-aged scrap hauler in a glorified flightsuit with a ray gun, basically.

Actually Homecoming doesn't really even let Peter defeat Vulture. Vulture inadvertantly defeats himself. After curb-stomping Peter.

Had homecoming come first, it would have been better. I like aspects of the MCU Spidey, but I do feel like they've gone out of their way to make it more light hearted and taken away a major part of Peter's character which is the pathos. They made the right choice in not showing us uncle ben being shot a third time, but his presence being completely wiped from the series makes Peter's character less interesting and his motivations a bit more shallow. It never feels like there is any weight to the proceedings. I think the best part of the two solo films so far have been the villains.

You know I never even thought about it like that.

This. Exactly this. The major problem with MCU Spider-Man.

Yeah Homecoming should have been our first real introduction to MCU Spider-Man, because as much as I did love his introduction in Civil War it just didn't feel organic in any way even if they want to bring up random crap like him being the kid IM2 as an excuse which I never bought in the first place. They could have done some serious development with his character as well as lay the groundwork to the whole Aunt May/Uncle Ben dynamic.

Also, I know Holland's Peter Parker is supposed to be younger, but when you really think about it he should be a much more experienced Spider-Man by now. The dude has fought alongside and against other superhero's as well as alien armies which has to count for something.

Tobey Maguire and even Andrew Garfield's versions never got that same kind of experience yet both of them still became exceptionally skilled superhero's by the time they got to their sequels.

That's a good point. He's actually had way more experience on a bigger scale than anything Maguire or Garfield's Peters ever dealt with.

I’m excited to see Spidey become his own man. As for Dr. strange appearance he there to repair the reft in reality that is probably broken by Wanda exposure to the multiverse

I saw a comment on Twitter about how the MCU allowed literally every other character be their own hero...except for Spider-Man. I think FFH was a step in the right direction with him becoming his own hero towards the end and the battle with Mysterio, but I don't have any hope Holland's Spider-Man learns to stand on his own and become the Spidey we all know and love.

I think people underestimate the reason why Spider-man is that way. Marvel already have enough heroes and Spider-man is their only teen hero currently. so of course they will treat him abit differently and for as long as they can. and with Spider-man they can get away with that lighthearted fun cross over of the week type deal.

They probably don't see it as Spider-man isn't his own hero. they see it as a kid superhero in a world of adult heroes.

This will probably be both a Multiverse film AND a Sinister Six film. I don't see this also being a Spider-Verse film unless they have Maguire, Garfield et al. in mid-credits cameos setting one up. Electro will probably be the big bad given that Foxx was cast early. I get that anything can happen but given how streamlined the MCU Spider-Man films have been so far I doubt they'll cram in an entire Spider-Verse plot.

Which is a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.

Which is totally valid. But I think what's also important is we're getting great Spider-Man movies again after the disastrous ASM movies. Are there changes I'd like Disney/Marvel and Sony to make, new directions I'd like for this version of Peter Parker to go? Of course. But I'm satisfied enough with what we've got that I really don't mind if things stay the way they are.

And I'm glad you and many people are satisfied with what we've got, this version of Spider-Man gets a ton of praise from the general audience.

I wouldn't say TASM was disastrous though considering it did well with both critics and at the box office. Not to mention my favorite live action Spider-Man to date.

You and I are on entirely different wavelengths then lol, but I respect that.

I think we’ll just get Garfield with a Maguire tease/cameo. SM4 will be full on Spider-Verse. I think they might even bring in a live action Miles.

But what can't they do in a 3rd movie that they can do in a 4th?

And it's about damn time they did, too. There are so many characters overdue for a live action adaptation.

If Electro is the big bad of 3 then 4 could be Sinister Six. Plus the introduction of the other Spider-folks. I don’t think trying to pack all of it in movie is the way to go.

The assumption that electro is the main villain is only because the news he was in it got out. Whether they wanted that news out is a different thing, I very much doubt he is the only villain.

And look at thor ragnarok. It crammed alot into its runtime. Its possible to do in 2+ hours.

But look at the timing of the casting for other MCU big bads. Michael Keaton and Jake Gyllenhaal were cast pretty early on as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Electro isn't the only villain. Foxx's casting may be the first of the new bads.

Then again, there's nothing to say Keaton and Gyllenhaal won't return as villains along with Foxx .

If they're going with the trilogy like arch , it would make sense for Vulture and Mysterio to at least make an appearance in 3 to pick up hanging threads from SMHC and SMFFH.

I’m not assuming. Just speculating based on available info. I still think introducing the Spider-Verse and Sinister Six all in full is a lot for one movie, regardless of Ragnarok. Watts ain’t no Waititi.

After the release of Spider-Man's game on PS4, I feel like the bar has really been set high. To me, that's the definitive version of the character when it comes to adaptations.

If you take away the MCU connections and Tom Holland's performance from this franchise, then it really doesn't have any strong legs to stand on its own.
