Comics Spider-Man Respect Thread!

But the "life going down the crapper" was his own fault. Cause seriously, PETER PARKER HAS GONE THROUGH THE CHAOS of ONE VILLAIN KNOWING HIS ID!!! see Stacy, Gwen; Goblin, Green; Bridge. Watson-Parker, Mary Jane; Venom. Parker, May (Both the baby and the old lady); Goblin, Green. yet he unmasks on national tv... He wasn't outed. He CHOSE to put the target on his loved ones foreheads, even though he knows what would happen if he revealed his ID to the world. (The very same Spidey who was hellbent on keeping his mask on.) Ignoring the Earth-1 Joe Q plot to reboot Spidey, 616 Spidey acted out of character with the unmasking.

My next favorite to the master planner story is the Night Gwen Stacy died.
I think it really reinforces Amazing fantazy # 15, it's also the first step towards Peter and Mj's marriage.
No doubt about that! It's a story that also truly place the Green Goblin at the top of the list in terms of greatest Villian. I mean, if you think about, whe nthe Goblin started out, he wanted to be the biggest crime boss ever, but time after time of Spider-Man getting in the way drove him to something further. It then became personal. His goal wasn't becoming the biggest crime boss ever, it was to torture and destroy Spider-Man. Then, it led to the death of the girl Peter was going ot marry. That's just a brilliant Villian and legacy right there.

I don't often post here any more, but I'm really pissed that a Spider-Man respect thread has turned into this BS. I don't want to hear about the crap twists they've shoved in S-M's ridiculous life. It's a comic. Get over it and lets get back to the respect! Coming Home, Revelations (the first good 1), the boy who collected spider-man = awesome. In civil war when Mr Fantastic sees spider-man moving so fast he's in 3 places at once and says "amazing" and then pete replies "sensational" aand smacks Mr F = awesome. I adored the post-ben reilly stuff when pete came back and the stories were bright and fun (ignoring the green goblin stuff). like mad jack and elektra and morbius! I miss spider-man hitting the heavies as well. But I am enjoying the new stuff. The Doc Ock story was OK. They did ***** all over Doc Ock though....

A guy that gives up being married to a supermodel who is carring his baby so that his aunt who is 120, who has had a dozen heart attacks, can live maybe one more year is a moron.

Was MJ pregnant again during Back in Black? And yes, if the woman who raised and sacrificed for me was on deaths door, I would be concerned about my supermodel wife. :whatever:

Oh, and the Juggernaut 2-parter is one of my favorites. As for more modern stories, I liked the Punisher team-up in Amazing recently. Can't remember the artist off the top of my head, but he have a very Ditko-y style that I really enjoyed.

I wrote this somewhere else, but will copy and past it here since this is the respect thread.

You know, over the course of comic books, there have been fantastic heroes. Very interesting, and girpping heroes such as Daredevil, Iron Man, The Hulk, Fantastic Four, and the list goes on and on. However, there's one hero that has made an impact on me all of my life. A hero that is like me, and that has stood the test of time. A hero that is not you're average " to the rescue" superhero. A hero that does what he does bacuse he needs to, not because he wants to. An emotionally driven hero. This hero....is Spider-Man.

When i first came across Spider-Man, it was probably around 1997, and my mother brought me home 2...um...15 or 20 inch figures from Spider-Man TAS action figure line. It was a talking Spider-Man, and a talking Venom. The appeal of the character, if I remember correctly, was so strong. TAS was such a great show.

I had the original Playstation Spider-Man video game as well as the original playstation Spider-Man: Enter Electro games. First came out in 2000, second in 2001.

When the first Spider-Man film came out, I truly was amazed when i saw it in the theatre. I just was stricken so hard form it, and i had the video game, figures, etc. Then, the second film came out and I was stunned even more. I saw it 4 times in the theatre and it was just great. I remember being in line for the second film and there were so many people. I look next to me and there's this big Spider-Man 2 cardboard standee poster next to me. Spidey is standing on a gargoyle holding his mask. standing over the city. There were other Spidey 2 poster standee's as well.

I bought the film on 2 disc DVD obviously, and i watached it so much that i had scratched the disc, lol. Obviously, I have another copy. I watched Spider-Man (2002) alot as well, but i had that on VHS. Then, around the time S-M2 came out, I bought it on DVD. during these times, I was reading Spider-Man comics. My first was a reprint of Amazing Fantasy 15, and then I read quite a few Ditko issues and Romita Sr. issues. I was also reading the current ones as well. Now, this was about 7 years ago. Well, the DItko ones were mainly 7 or 8 years ago. Then, etc, I started reading the back issues from issue #1 and on and on and on, etc. I know my knowledge for the Spidey comics is said to be a little too much for a soon to be 16 year old, but I NEEDED to read the back issues. How I love those back issues. Also, I would just like to say, I really did like Ross Andru's art. Not my favorite, but I thought I'd mention him.

Anyway, as time whent on, so did the comics. I mean, that Ezekiel story ended, so ROmita Jr. was off the book. Then came Sins Past, which was just bad and so on and so forth. Civil War came aorund and I was just really upset that Spidey unmasked himself to the world. Also, I really did like the Back In Black story, which, although good, wasn't nearly as good as the current stories, but I'll get to that soon.

So, after S-M2 came out, there was a gap in between. I eagerly awaited S-M3. Then, the first set images hit and i was so excited. I stayed on my computer all day until the middle of the night waiting for trailers, etc. My computer was so worn out by it, but it got through it. Met it's demise last August, but that's a different story, lol. Got a newer
one the next day.

Anyway, I saw S-M3 at midnight and i was first in line out of 200 people. I waited in line for about 3 hours and I was and still am willing to wait weeks outside for a Spider-Man film or anything Spidey related. I came out satisfied, despite peoples reactions. I saw it again in the theatre soon after, etc.

Then, OMD happened, and I was furious as hell, but when BND came along, I was so happy with the result. I mean, BND was fantastic and just kept getting better.

So, now, we are here. Spider-Man's 600th issue, which, if you ask me, sounds fantastic.

This character, as I stated earlier, has had such a huge impact on me that anybody who doesn't have Spidey as their favorite superhero will never understand. People may say, "Oh, I'm a huge comic book fan! I love EVERYTHING!". Ummm, yeah, you may like comics, but you don't connect with every character in and out unless he's your favorite. Look, I'm a huge comic obok fan and I buy tons of titles such as new Avengers, mighty Avengers, Fantastic Four, and MUCH MUCH MUCH more. There's a reason you like that character, and if you are not loyal enough on choice, then you're not a fan.

People may make fun of me for thinknig Spider-Man is great, but I don't care. All it does is show how ignorant you are. You don't know the character, and you don't know the true moral of it.

I've had/still have problems in life in terms of stress and stuff. One stressful thing ends, another begins, and I realize that makes me feel like I can relate to Peter Parker so much. I felt like I was born to like this character. I will do anything to keep that character alive. Anything.

I stayed up all night for issue 600 and didnt' get to sleep until last night and I'd stay up 5 days if I had to if it involved Spider-Man

Happy 600th issue Spider-Man, and keep on living strong!

Yeah, the issue just came out but mad respect goes to # 600 as it was a fantastic story! Very great back up stories by Stan Lee/Marcos Martin, Mark Waid/Colleen Doran, Marc Guggenheim/Mitch Breitweiser, Zeb Wells/Derec Donovan...could have done without the Bob Gale story. :o

And the mock Amazing Spider-Man covers were freakin' hilarious.

RESPECT to Amazing Spider-Man # 600. RESPECT to Dan Slott. RESPECT to John Romita Jr., the definitive Spider-Man artist of the modern era.

RESPECT to the greatest fictional character of all time, SPIDER-MAN!!
:spidey:

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Well, he's a human being, and humans make poor decisions when under duress. They can be the most heroic, honest person in the world, but everyone acts selfishly once and awhile. I mean, his life was going down the crapper, his ID outed, on the run etc. Then his aunt is shot by someone going after him. I'm surprised he didn't go all, "I am the Spider". Yes, OMD was a ludicrous premise, but considering the circumstances, I can see Peter doing what he did. Was it right choice? No, but I don't see my favorite character as broken at all.

I do, and that goes for many others as well.
That's why I said the story telling is divisive.
I know Peter was under alot of stress. But he was an idiot throughout civil war all the way to One more day.

My whole point is, he put his wife AND his aunt. Of all people through so much crap just to save his Aunt by means of a two-faced villain like Mephisto. He's met Ghost rider before. He knows Mephisto could have well gotten what he wanted and still found another means to kill off Aunt May and WORST at that. It didn't remask him. That decision would have just put her on the run again (if anyone was paying attention)

That totally goes against the character. We've seen him in stressful times before. He never budges and he never gives up. Never. That's Peter Parker.
He's not the every man. He is what every man should try to be.

Posters like you really get on my nerves. It didn't turn into a big argument. It was actually an intelligent discussion of OMD.
Someone said they respected Peter's strength in OMD, I disagreed. Someone disagreed with me, its all good. Mr. Thomas is great, Dacman is cool and so is Alastor. No one's crying.

Your the one coming in here and attacking other posters.

You say "get over it, it's a comic" When you don't even realize you devote some of your own free willing time to read and post here for "a comic".

How about you get over yourself, and we'll get over one more day? Ok? :oldrazz:

Wish I could get this as a better wall paper. :D

But It's not just Peter's own sacrifice. He was NOT a hero in that story.

To watch your marriage and your child just poof out of existence is unbearable. They literally killed Baby May, to bring back Old May. She wouldn't have approved of that. (Which is why I think JJJ SR. is mephisto)

As long as I've read Spidey he's always been the type to NEVER let anyone take a fall for him. Even if other heroes are out there.

It just seemed so selfish to me, and that goes against everything the character is supposed to stand for. His morals are flexible, but selfishness is the reason his uncle died.

Just a couple of comments...

Yes, Peter was not the "hero" in OMD... he, as well as MJ, made a poor decision... it's not the first time Peter has made "bad decisions", making deals with Venom so that he goes off free, letting Norman off the hook because he's his friend's Dad, etc... so knowing that the character of Peter Parker is not always perfect makes me accept his decisions in OMD... do I agree with them? Of course not... but I've not agreed with a LOT of previous decisions made by Peter Parker in my 35+ years of reading Spidey...

Secondly, it was only AFTER they made their decision that Mephisto pulled out the "Baby May" card... had they known a child (or children) were in the euqation, they might have decided otherwise... but you can't blame them for the "elimination" of Baby May when they thought she was dead to begin with...

Peter has made selfish decisions before... obviously one of them cost his Uncle Ben's life, but he also stole some gold from the Beyonder's gold building in Secret Wars II in order to help his personal financial life, he's jeopordized the lives of many innocents (the reporter Terry Kidder from the Pulse comes to mind) by not bringing Norman Osborn to jail because it would hurt his best friend.... Pete's a great character and role model, but he's not perfect, and he relunctantly makes decisions that he thinks might be the best at the time, but later regrets them... again, OMD was not a good story, but there have been a few "not so good stories in Spider-Man comics"... so I can just forget about it and move on.

I'm personally just glad that it was NOT a reboot and all the previous Spider-Man stories still count in continuity. That's very important to me, and I appreciate the efforts being made to keep things in order.

Just my two cents...

Mike

Great story...

I think my first exposure to Spider-Man was around 1972, and it was the old 60's cartoon show which had been on syndication at a local TV station where I live, and it was one of the Scorpion episodes... I was probaly 4 or 5 at the time (depending on what time of year), and I thought it was awesome...

My grand-mother was an oddball and always had comics in the house, though they were the old DC romance comics from the 50's, tons of Archie's, as well as loads of Marvel westerns... so I quickly developped a love of comics...

My first ever issue of ASM that I ever bought was issue #148...

Started collecting "monthly" with ASM #183, and I've never looked back.

In the words of Sir Donald Thomas...

Spidey rules with the greatest fans of all ages... :spidey:

Thanks, and wow, that sounds interesting. Spidey all your life? So far, I know how that feels. Also, you grew up with the 60's show? Good show, honestly. I bought the box set in 2004.

I feel like Spidey has become my brother or something. Like, sometimes I feel like I'm him because of how much time and dedication is put into him every day. I mean, for christs sake, I cut my hand open one time by accident and had to get stitches. I forced myself to play a Spider-Man video when I know it could put my hand in danger, but I did it anyway.

Also, yes, Spidey does rule now and forever! :spidey:

LOL... in my old house, every spring, there used to be a big spider that made a web in the awning just above my back door, and as the summer went on, he got bigger and fatter, and I would at times want him to slide down on his webs and bite me and give me spider-powers...

Of course, the reality is that I'd have a swollen hand for a few weeks... :o

Really? Wow, lol. Well, that's what Spider-Man does to you. He consumes you and makes you think...odd things. Such a freakin awesome character.

Speaking of spiders, maultiple times withtin this past decade, I've seen spirs in my house. FUnny thing is, whenever I saw them, the were crawling on any Spider-Man things. It was a cool image, I have to say.

Yes, yes, I know his morals are flexible. That's what makes him interesting.
He's not perfect, no man can be.

Everyone rips on the "deals with venom". That's bad story telling. But you could also argue (at the time) that defeating Venom for good would mean killing brock.

He's tried to put Norman in prison a great many of times to no avail and look what happened when he finally did it in Marvel knights.

We've seen Peter make sneaky decisions before, like selling fake pictures to Jonah. Those situations never hurt anyone. Wrong, but Jonah isn't exactly the pope. :o

Let me rephrase my post a little bit more,
regardless of the outcome Peter knew things would get worse if he went through with the mephisto deal. He acted as if nothing else mattered except how he felt.

When it counts Peter is selfless. This isputting his Aunt back on the run, or whatever else goes wrong so her death wouldn't be "his fault". :csad:

They still haven't explained what happened in the 100 days following One more day, and if you remember it only wiped the marriage and brough Aunt May back to being healthy.

That means their connections to Spider-man, shouldn't have been immediately wiped. Now that I've thought about that it's very confusing.

(Sorry about the bold TMOB, too lazy to fix it.) :csad:

Screw that. I can't completely be pro for Brand new day.
Let's just say I'll continue to keep my eyes open. ;)

Favorite Spider-man picture of all time.

Wish I could get this as a better wall paper. :D

My favorite of all time is probably this one.

ultimatespiderman.jpg

^^ Great image, honestly. I'm not a big a fna of Ultimate Spidey, but still, I always thought that image was cool.

Hey, everyone! As you can see I'm totally new here! I've been a Spidey fan since I can remember as a child. Sometimes I leave comics, only to come back and buy back issues. Currently I have about three long boxes of Spidey with over a hundred-issue run from ASM in the eighties which I'm proud of.

I also have a confession to make that I've never made on-line before. I use to own ASM # 39, but I gave it away to some random kid along with all my other stuff at the time!!!! I've never been really attached to material things in general, but, man, do I regret that!!! I managed to get most of it back though (including ASM #122 - Death of Green Goblin which I treasure). Sometimes one makes really bad decisions for sure!

I'm from another board (and I don't know if it's cool to mention that so I won't elaborate) where the OMD / BND hate is out of control! But reading this thread, I'm hoping the hate is tempered here with others who still have profound respect and love for Spidey.

I think my favorite run so far is the Roger Stern, JRjr in the eighties which as probably most of you know featured the original Hobgoblin, Tarantula turning into a monster along with Will-o-Wisp, Juggernaut arc, and Spidey diggin' on the Black Cat!

I'm challenging myself on this however by reading the classics that are on DVD. I finished the 1960's and someday will review my top ten from that era. Hopefully I can post it here someday. I have to agree with the folks on this thread about ASM #33, it's the tail end of the Master Planner arc which is a gripping account of Spidey never giving up. Highly recommended read!

I honestly don't know what my favorite Spidey story of all-time is because there's so much there, but if I find out I'll totally let you guys know.

Have a good one and thanks for reading.
