Spielberg Directing Roald Dahl Adaptation 'BFG'

I feel like when you have ILM and Weta and even some of the lesser knowns out there that have done impressive work there is no excuse.

the fake cgi has to be a creative choice. right?

Presumably. In this day and age Spielberg knows there's better than that.

I just dont understand why they feel the need to CGI the giant characters. When a giant is alone in their house it can all easily be done using real actors and sets.

Honestly, I'm a bit confused why Spielberg is doing this film at this point in his career. When he did Indy 4, his heart didn't seem to be in the material at all.

Its not like Speilberg isn't capable of making good films still, but he's at a different stage in his career (and life) that when he goes back to the genres that made him famous...it's not the same.

The only director from the same era who probably can go back and forth, and also evolve even at 70 is Marty Scorsese.

Bridges of Spies in october 2015 and BFG in july 2016. Beard slow down :)

Man, the effects and the green screen compositing in this look like they're from one of the middle Harry Potter sequels. Not really sure what they are doing there.

As a side note though, Bridge of Spies was so quietly great. Just solid all the way around.

With Lincoln and Bridge of Spies, Spielberg shows a much lighter touch and a trust in the writing and the performances which is quite refreshing after he cranked up his Spielbergisms to the overbearing max in War Horse.

You'd be like that too if the only reason your sequel is getting made is because George Lucas forced you to and manhandled multiple story elements. This is why Indy 5 will be better: no Lucas meddling.

getting very mixed reviews mostly saying it lacks the classic Spielberg flair
http://www.slashfilm.com/the-bfg-reviews-early-buzz/

To be fair, all of these reviews are coming from Cannes, the world's most overly-artsy showcase and killing ground for the world's toughest film critics. Aka The Ancient Mystic Society of No Spielbergs (if anyone gets that reference, then congrats)

I'm gonna wait until reviews are published closer to release to judge. I admire SS's decision not to just adapt Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again, but The BFG's kind of a weird story for him to do out of all of Roald Dah's works and the book doesn't really come of as Spielberg-esque. I'd rather have seen him remake The Witches or something, or heck, if he really wanted to work with Disney, why didn't HE direct the upcoming Pete's Dragon remake?

Oh... so that's what the acronym stands for... I thought it was just "Big ****ing Giant!"

The CGI is growing on me. And I liked this trailer a lot too. It's the wonder of Spielberg that I miss.

So what's the word on this? Is Señor Spielbergo back in form?

I absolutely love the effects in these final clips coming out. They're leagues better than what was shown in the trailers. This being my favorite:

I knew the effects would be there with time.

Spielberg will never return to his 1970s-80s peak --he's in a different place now, so his film-making will reflected more of his current age. I also don't think that he'll returns to Jurassic Park form either.

His film will be quite good though. In any case , I'll be looking for to BFG.

I don't understand. There was one of those sneak peeks where Spielberg said he couldn't have made this movie 15 years ago because the FX weren't there. And yet, the FX in this movie look as fake as something 15 years ago. The BFG looks way too rubbery and fake. ET was rubbery and fake too but at least he was in the same room.

In the trailers, yes. In the new clips, if that looks rubbery you need to get your eyes fixed:

I heard this has been bombing like a son of a B.... FG.

It flopping is depressing as hell to me. It earned an A- cinemascore and has critics backing it so it's a great film. Heard the screenwriter for ET who wrote this died recently, so this being their last film and second time partnering up is a bummer that this is how it went. Hoping word of mouth spreads due to A- cinemascore. I'm planning on seeing it Tuesday. Focused on working this weekend.

After seeing this and watching the Pete's Dragon remake trailer, I get the feeling Disney actually brought Spielberg on to direct THAT movie, but he must not have been interested in it so they suggested this instead? Because honestly? Spielberg is a great director, that'll never change. But stuff like fart jokes and gross-out humor like that have never been his forte when it came to light-hearted faire like this.
