Spoiled by The Dark Knight

prior to this conversation, no one I know that has even seen The Matrix has ever referred to it as a superhero movie

Back in the Hancock 2 thread I was wondering if anyone considered the guys from the Matrix superheroes when we were discussing superhero movies that were created originally for the screen. I did but i haven't heard much of anyone else saying this.
You yourself said you didn't consider Unbreakable a superhero movie in that thread, that I couldn't understand.
I suppose most people only think 'superhero movie' when they are sitting in front of a movie with someone in costume with superpowers fighting crime.
To me the Matrix is just a little more subtle with it. Shades = masks, long coats = capes. The filmakers go for the exact same effects from the clothes as a superhero's costume, even having sound effects when Morpheus' coat swoops through a doorway like a cape.

then you might be one out of 100 people that consider The Matrix a superhero movie....the movie has been out almost 10 years now and you are the first person Ive ever heard even hint at that....

if it makes you feel better, go for it

If the exact same story was published in a comicbook and the same folk picked it up I wonder what kind of comicbook story they would think of it as, with someone flying around 'doing his Superman thing'.
It's not about making you feel better, it's about realising that a certain type of story can be looked down on if it has certain elements.. cape , mask.. and folk can be embaressed to like it, but it's ok to be into it if the costumes arn't so 'childish'. Labeling doesn't make the movie any better, but it sure can make people turn away in snobbery due to superhero literature having a childish image in the general audience.
Even with sci-fi, a lot of folk who wouldn't think of tuning into a sci-fi/fantasy tv series got into Lost in a big way as it was marketed as a plane crash/desert island type story. Then the next thing you know folk are shocked they are so into a sci-fi show as they asumed it was all 'nonsense'. I overheard a bunch of women on the train having a conversation about Lost that was exactly about this, one woman seemed a little freaked that she was so into it as 'I don't usually watch stuff like this.'

If Unbreakable was released today and marketed as a superhero movie it may well have done better at the box office, as they are all the rage. As was, it was maketed as a supernatural thriller like Sixth Sense and many folk were strapped in for something they were not ready to take as seriously as it was presented.
