Dead or alive?
Even McMahon won't tell

"Premonition" is one of those movies about a married couple possessing the perfect life until the husband dies in a car accident. Or did he really die? Sandra Bullock doesn't know, and the husband, played by "Nip/Tuck" star Julian McMahon, isn't telling when he shows up at home without a scratch on his body.
Needless to say, the family's annual Christmas letter will be a little confusing this year.

"It's one of those mind-bending, psychological-horror freakouts," McMahon says of the movie, due in March. "It was a little strange playing a normal guy because, as an actor, you always want to be doing something. This guy doesn't do anything. I had to keep telling myself: 'Stop. Be still. This guy is steadfast.' "

There were no such worries for McMahon when it came time to reprise his role as cosmic bad guy Victor von Doom in "The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (June 15). When we last saw Dr. Doom in 2005's summer blockbuster "The Fantastic Four," his body was in a casket headed to Latveria.

"Two years have passed for Doom, trapped in this casket," McMahon says. "Needless to say, he's not happy."

He's also not the only bad guy, competing with the powerful master of energy, the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones, who plays Pan and the Pale Man in "Pan's Labyrinth").
Doom being Doom, he doesn't want to play nice. He wants to take the Surfer's powers.
"Doom hasn't changed he still wants to rule the world and kill the Fantastic Four," McMahon says. "He's a simple man, really. The great thing is, we don't have to waste any time establishing his character. You get the bad guy from the beginning. It's great demonic, cartoony stuff."

Cartoony? :csad:

I am really REALLY hoping we don't get another hokey "Marco Polo" take on the good Doctor. He is NOT a simple man. Victor--with all his issues--is definitely one of the most complex personalities in the entirety of the MU.

*sighs and braces for inevitable impact*

Wasn't the source material cartoony. I think he means comicbooky. It's a fun franchise tongue in cheek sorta stuff.

Damn he really spoiled that about him taking the surfer's powers. Oops.

I don't believe that's what he meant. The first film's intepretation of Doom was "cartoony" as in one dimmentionally silly, cardboard, mustache-twirling, predictable...ehn...you get my point? ;) We do not need a repeat of this...Dr. Doom needs to be taken seriously this time.

Yes he did. And I've adjusted your thread title to something a bit more appropriate for the forum.

Funny to read that I just got done watching the 90's cartoon when Doom took SS's powers.

I didn't take it that way either. This is just McMahon talking.
From all other indications, Don Payne and Tim Story have beefed up Doom appropriately.

I agree. When Story said FULL Doom, not like the 1st, I take him at his word. I think this time we will see a Doom worthy of that title. He takes the Surfers powers ? No spoiler there, since it was reported in the MTV interview. I think all charactors will be powered up for this movie. I would be shocked if we hear a Marco Polo like line heard this time around. But let us remember 1 thing. We are talking about a comic book one that did not take itsself too seriously. FF is not dark, and serious like Batman, or Superman.

Fox had the 1st FF movie leashed or held back from it's potential and played it totally safe. Understanably it's a franchise that's never been tested in the mainstream like this and they gambled alot of money on it. It paid off and I think they'll give the screenwriters and Tim Story more freedom this time around. It seems obvious to me.

Simple and cartoony? Wonderful. Here I thought they might take Doom seriously this time around.

I think you guys are misunderstanding what he meant by cartoony

half the **** Doom does in the comics is cartoony and out there "cartoony and sadistic" is basically dead on, we just live and breath Doom so we don't quite understand what the **** he's saying. So just read slower and take in all the words.

awesome interview albeit short, I can't wait till Julian does more FF2 promotion, I always love his interviews

Simple isn't a bad thing as far as his reasons of action and we all know he didn't mean like Elmer Fudd.

He meant "simple man" in a very tongue in cheek way. All he really wants is to rule the world (and kill the Fantastic Four). What could be more simple than that?

I really think Iren (Onlooker) posted this first on Saturday night in the Doom thread, she's just too nice to point it out!

The article in contained in this post and is titled Dead or Alive and she included a promo still with Julian and Sandra Bullock from "Premonition"

Carp Man is right about the FF title itself not always taking itself seriously. After all, they would often "break the fourth wall" by having Stan or Jack show up in the book themselves. In FF#10, Doom even committed the dastardly deed of blowing up Jack Kirby's ash tray! To his credit, the outgoing FF writer J M Strazinsky added a touch of black humor to Doom's return from Club Hell. His first order of business upon his return was to whack the overly ambitious prime minister who ruled in his absence and then demand a bath to get rid of the smell of brimstone.

I think he meant "cartoony" as in "comic book stuff". Doom really is larger than life anyway. I also like Doom's plan. A lot. It screams Doom from miles away.

Let's face it. As much as we love Doom, he's over the top. I wouldn't use the word "cartoony", but I would say that one of the biggest problems with the first film was that McMahon played him too straight.

One might say that Hannibal Lecter was "cartoony". Both HL and Doom are larger than life characters, so I don't have problem with him using those words (I have other concerns with McMahon, but that word usage isn't the worst of it).

Well...we'll see.

There are a few major things that need to be "fixed" with Doom this time and the top two for me are:

1.) A "regal" and more complex upgrade to his character
2.) His appearance

I hope that's not too much to ask for. Last time Julian summed up the character in this way he was dead on for the film's performance. So yes--I'm leery. *crosses fingers*

*sighs*.....All the actors need to just stop talking....lol

according to this....looks like the 2 year span is correct.

Well, it is nice to hear from Julian again...I still hold to my ideas that McMahon can play Doom properly if given the chance...the demonic description sounds intense and yes, "cartoony" can fit Dr. Doom..since he is the original prototype for so many of the villains to come. World domination? Cartoony...but kick a** and if Doom does get the
Surfer's cosmic powers
then I expect nothing more than Doom to force the planet to its knees...

The only thing that confuses me about what McMahon said is that its been 2 years since the first one and he is still trapped in this? I figured he would have gotten free and he would have conquered Latveria, then begin his battle with Richards and his clan/Surfer. Oh well, we shall see...

Well, remember Story's first or second blog entry, he was working on the "new and improved" Doom maquette....well, he says he was trying to make sure Doom could have his cloak but at the same time, allow it to not get in the way of Doom battling...

why the hell does doom want the surfer's powers, he got enough as he does already????

I think he's been depowered, plus nothings ever enough for doom!!

Yeah at first i was a little iffy about the simple comment but thinkin about it i agree with onlooker, he means it as all he wants is two things. Two very big things though!!

I'm just happy to see that he's not after Sue anymore.....except to want her dead along with the other 4....

Maybe because the Surfer will be the one to free him?

Because the power cosmic DWARFS Doom's puny powers (if he still has them).
but the appeal is much less than normal...

I mean he's more than capable of taking on the fantastic four as he is now...
