Superman Returns SR Sequel: $200 million or else!?

Precisely. If released in the current marketplace, it would have been deemed too light on action and without a more menacing villain - which, ironically enough, is one of the main criticisms on SR as a product. The good thing about today is a lot of good movies that don´t impress as much as expected on BO are discovered by a big part of the audience on DVD. It happened to BB and Kong, and I can bet the same will happen to SR.
I hope you're right, but I don't sweat it. I'm beginning to think that some major changes to how cinemas work will be made in the next couple of decades. With the advent of home theater and the growth of piracy, the business will have to change or pretty soon all movies will go straight to DVD. These days it's so expensive to go to see a movie regularly. Even if it's a matinee, I'm still getting cleaned out after going to see more than one movie every month (including gas and concessions). I think that SR is a prime example of why IMAX is the future of cinemas. They need to expand and shift every major event movie to IMAX. Most people don't have the incentive to go to the theaters anymore because of DVD. This is one of the main reasons I don't take half as many chances on movies as I used to. IMAX changed that for me. I drove thirty miles, rode an hour ferry, and hitched a cab to watch Harry Potter 4 and Superman Returns both. I did it because the experience is three times better than I get at my local Regal Cinemas.

Cinemas are going to 3D. Movies are going to be shot in 3D. Camcorders can't shoot them, and they wont do it for either the blue ray or the HD DVD's. They are testing it out with the new Nightmare Before Christmass, which 3D was done by ILM and looks far superior to what SR's 3D was.

I didn't see Superman Returns in 3D, I did see it in digital and it look great. Question is can you really compare a live action 3D movie with a sem-animated movie such as Nightmare Before Christmas?

SR's 3D was nothing more than a marketing afterthought (and a smart one). This is why IMAX came up with that proprietary conversion stuff. At times, the 3D effect looked awesome, but at others it just fell flat by comparison to the standard 3D outings that IMAX offers. I'm not just referring to the 3D stuff either, but the entire IMAX shuffle. Super-sized screen, steep seating, and acoustically-controlled 5,000 watt sound system. I love watching movies in that because EVERYTHING is top-notch. The sound is better-controlled by the room design and it easily reflects it. The screen is well...freaking huge. I'm still bummed I didn't see Spider-Man 2, Attack of the Clones, and Batman Begins in IMAX after seeing Superman there. I just wonder whether all of the new 3D filming tech is going to cost inordinate amounts of cash. Crap, these flicks are getting expensive as it is, anyway.

Could they convert the polarized 3D versions to fit blue-ray so we could see them at home?

I enjoyed this movie. But its one of those that I would never watch again unless someone paid me. I dont mean to compare it to batman but with BB I can watch that every two days. Superman Returns there is just something about that movie that makes it a one time viewing..

^ I feel the exact opposite. But I agree with you about the batman begins thing. I can watch begins everyday, and enjoy it each and every time.

Superman Returns, I feel I cant get enough of. Watching it once or twice isn't doing it for me. I must see it over, and over and over again. I wanna see the eye candy of him floating above the earth once more. I gotta see him recharge using the sun once more. I feel like I cant get enough of it.

Yeah, these days I watch most movies on DVD, I only go to theaters to see something special to me or that I think must be seen on a big screen. IMAX and 3D are the future of the theater experience.

People can call SR underwhelming all they like, but the truth is, it´s one of only five movies that have made 200m in US this year and it doesn´t look like there will be more.

Its possible. But I think that WB will make it drop a lot of theaters next week now that it hit 200mil.

Nice that it has now made over 200 million. :). I voted in june that it would make over 200 million and I was right :woot:

Boxofficemojo has also the numbers up now

Domestic Total as of Oct. 22, 2006: $200,006,305

I never really doubted that their would be a sequel, but that number sure makes me feel a little better about it.
