I've also read articles which say that merchandising did sell well.So i guess it depends on who they asked and what that person perceives to be a succes.

No. BB cost 150 mill, and Nolan and Goyer brought it in for a lot cheaper than they could have. So the fact is that that film did turn a profit in Box office, and a lot later in DVD sales. SR still hasn't turned a profit. The quote abpve is a direct copy and paste from the front page. Despite what people here who like the film thing, SR is still considered a failure in that at the end of it's theatrical run, it has still yet to turn a profit.

In the end the profit margins from either will be about the same, otherwise WB would cut off this franchise like a lame leg. Sure, I'll give you that the by the numbers box office digits aren't screamingly favorable for SR compared to BB in the domestic category, but the truth is that I have no idea the exact profit in change that either film cleared/will clear after all of the receipts are counted, international or domestic. However, even in the Variety article they explained that WB execs insist that SR came in under a budget of $200 million. SR's budget could be anywhere between the $185 mark that was quoted previously or just a hair below the $200 million mark, but no one but WB knows for sure. I've heard budgets ranging all the way up to $210. Now if we had an EXACT figure on what the damn thing actually cost out the door, then I'd be inclined to agree or disagree with you a bit more. The fact is, WB is hiding all of their cards and don't care as much about the film in the theaters because it has probably already just about broke even, hence the sequel. When it hits store shelves, they'll make even more off of the Ultimate Collector's Sets, as well as the stand-alone releases. They may even wait a year or so and release another special edition with the Krypton sequence just to rake in even more money from the diehards. They pad these kinds of movies economically these days in case of a Catwoman-esque disaster where it doesn't even eek by at the box office, but falls flat on its ass and is a universal bomb (Superman IV?).

They're a money driven, Arabian-owned company that is fueled by the almighty dollar. WB owns a staggering amount of things in the entertainment and communications business. The bottom line is the prime motivator, even if the studio heads try to convince people otherwise by sounding all sentimental towards things. They wouldn't waste time with Superman if they didn't feel it would make money. Why else did they fight to get Batman back on track? Because Spider-Man set a fiscal example Warner hasn't even come close to touching since the original Batman's success in 1989.

I can't find the article, but it was posted in August in here that a Warner Executive stated that it was in the neighborhood of 140, but with the tax breaks from Austrailia, the film came in at somewhere around 213 mill.

Well, I can't say whether I'm in my right mind or not, but I'm pretty glad a Metallo fight was not in SR. I think Metallo is pretty one dimensional anyways. In fact, unlike most iconic heroes, Superman has a pretty lame rouge's gallery, most of which would not translate well to film. ( Even Bruce Timm and the producers of the Superman Animated series admit that compared to Batman, Superman's villains are pretty lame, and they had a hell of a time making them cool ) I'm just not one of those people that need some fight scene to complete a Superman movie. As long as people can't fly, lift cars, use heat vision or super breath in real life, Superman will always remain entertaining to me onscreen, with or without a fight scene. Although I admit the 12 year old version of me may have thought differently.

i gotta disagree with you. it depends on how good the writer is.
unfortunately, singer & his two sidekicks are only good in writing small & tiny stuffs. they can't see bigger and farer picture.

I went into a Party Place store to pick up stuff for a party yesterday and I saw an endcap that was superman trick or treat bags as I entered into the front door. There were two choices:

1. Comic book Superman with the real suit, like the one that Reeve wore in his movies

2. SR bag with the painted Routh in his suit that was on a lot of the toys.

The comic book Superman ones were pretty much almost gone and the SR ones were still full. So I asked one of the employees near that area that was re-stocking if she restocked that area. She said she did. I had her come with me to the end cap and I pointed the them both and asked "which one of these sells more?" She said she has had to restock the Comic book Superman bags every day and the SR ones have not needed to be restocked at all since they put them up.

Then I went with the girl I was with to the back of the store to get more stuff for the party and it was in the area with the costumes. The printed sleeves that come that plastic bag that the costumes are in where stapled to the wall. Curious, I took a look. The Comic book and classic suits costumes were sold out. In fact most of the costumes in the store were except for the SR ones. I know because they had stickers saying "sold out" on all the ones that were sold out.

Then we went into target for more halloweeen themed party stuff. Since everything Halloween was in one section, I went into the comic section. There was one Classic suit left, and it seemed to me that all of the SR suits and belts and stuff where completely full. Someone did buy the SR rubber chains that you can pull apart for another costume their kid was wearing. We were in a hurry, so I didn't want to find the Target Employee who was responsible for that section and who re-stocks if on how the stuff was selling. All I can say is that all of the SR stuff was full on the racks, and everything else was going, including all of the classic Superman suits.

That is what happened. Believe me or not, I don't care. But that is the truth.

That might be the right figure. These days, they get more and more secretive (or in this case flip-floppingly deceptive). I can't even recall the total number of posts and articles I've thumbed though here or elsewhere that give a new figure, whether it's published by a site, one of the trades, or an interview with Singer or someone else. Chances are, we'll never get an exact figure from these guys. I'm willing to be ten bucks WB was already prepared in case the film didn't make it to $500 million worldwide in theaters. The DVD scheme is genius if they can count the profits of the Ultimate Collection towards the SR profit. If not, they're dumb.

Your statement comes of as if the whole USA wasn't buying the SR stuff. I doubt that, 'cause there were other articles claiming the costumes sold very well but not as good as the Pirate's.

A little note about me: In my case, I can already tell you that WB can't expect much money (merchandising) from Germany, cause the movie pretty much bombed here!!! There are very few people that even know about that movie, most hate it or find it mediocre and don't care much about the franchise. I first tried to convince the people at my workplace (~45) to see the movie by showing them the trailers but all I got was a big laugh, mainly because of how the suit looked and Superman in general. Note that was before the movie came out and I finally realised how stupid I was to even promote that garbage.
Considering other big european markets, like Italy and Britain, didn't live up to the hype as well, I was totally stunned to read there'll be a sequel.

Singer Begins Planning Superman Sequel

Superman Returns executive producer Chris Lee, director Bryan Singer and producer Jon Peters are in Honolulu this week to celebrate Lee's birthday, and to begin planning the next "Superman" film, which will likely begin production mid- to late next year in a location yet to be determined.

According to The Honolulu Advertiser, Singer acknowledged that he has also been approached to direct the fourth "X-Men" movie, but said he wouldn't have time to take on another large-scale project before the next "Superman" gets underway. He is interested, however, in seeing the script for the "X-Men" spinoff Wolverine.
