I was looking for March's sales numbers, and I ran across this item. Technically, it's not a Marvel topic, but I think most around here would be interested.

Even if it's a total suck-fest, I'll tune. Stan's the man, and I'll always give him the benefit of the doubt.

Also, Branson's kind of a cool guy.

Stan Lee to Create New Universe
With Virgin Comics
April 21, 2008
Stan Lee and Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Comics announced at New York Comic Con that they will collaborate on the creation of a new superhero universe, to be launched in early 2009. Lee will act as both a writer and editor, overseeing the creation of the new characters and universe.

A team of ten superheroes with varied backgrounds and origins will anchor the universe at first. Over time, some of the heroes will be revealed to be other than they seem, with infighting, abuses of power, and internal struggles which will show the characters that the real villains may be within themselves.

Lee will work with artists in the old school Marvel Method, in which the writer and artists collaborate in the creation of the story from the ground up in stages. Most comics are currently produced by an author delivering a finished script to an artist.

The new universe will be launched with a series of ten graphic novels and associated online animated shorts. Virgin plans to use both comic and videogame artists in the collaborations with Lee.

Could be good, could suck. I'm always in favor of not-Big 2 superheroics so I'll give it a look regardless.

Side note: You know what I really miss? Crossgen.:(

Crossgen was pretty awesome, even though I only ever read one issue from that side of things.

I guess Lee could make it work. We'll see how well that goes over in due time. I'll definitely give it a shot.

Pretty ambitious to think that after the countless creations he's already put out there, the well of ideas he's tapped into for many many years... That there could still be an interesting universe to shape, and captivating characters.

I'd be pretty damn impressed, but I won't hold my breath.

I'm just waiting for Aristotle to post his obligatory "Stan Lee is a Hack"

Honestly, I can't think of anything that he's come up with in ( 20? 30?) years that's meaningful. But what does it hurt to try, you know? His outdated dialogue will be the biggest impediment.

I consider his outdated dialogue to be the biggest selling point.

You think they'll do thought bubbles again? God, I hope they do thought bubbles again.

Well, if you like thought balloons, Bendis is doing them over in Mighty Avengers............badly.

Well, if you like thought balloons, Bendis is doing them over in Mighty Avengers............badly.

Operative word.

There's a lot of things I like that turn to **** when Bendis touches them.

I don't think I'll be looking at this stuff. As much as I love Stan Lee's creations, his versions of them usually aren't my favorites.

Holy crap, I just noticed they don't use thought bubbles anymore!

Really, they weren't so bad, it was interesting to see the self reflection of our favourite heroes when away from the action, better then having them talking to themselves out loud.

I always loved the worried expressions Ditko gave Pete while he was thinking about someone finding out his identity.

exactly, that was some good stuff..
humans are constantly thinking, saying one thing and thinking an other, etcetera.

Being able to hear what a character thinks is one of the reasons books are richer then movies.

They still have those text squares. It's the same thing it's just not shapped like a thought bubble.

Anubis...

...you are a god.

(No really, check the encyclopedias!)

They've been used the same, which just makes the mandate against thought bubbles seem even more stupid.
