Kahn may be the best, but Voyage Home is my favorite. It is The Trouble with Tribbles of the movie franchise! I know the film's plot is silly with the whale stuff and what-not but all the scenes of them in 1980s Earth is hilarious.

Oh, and does anyone now find it funny that Sulu says, "San Francisco. I was born there." :woot:

It's a lot of fun, it totally works as a comedy.

Plus Nicholas Meyer co-wrote, so of course it was good.

Hence, Meyer is responsible for the three best Trek movies. Khan, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country.

Whatever, Frank Langella was ****ing awesome.

If they ever did MOTU again, I would want him playing Skeletor again in live action.

It worked because it was genuinely funny and they totally sold it. It wasn't campy ridiculousness like BATMAN AND ROBIN. None of it felt out of place or painfully bad, cheap, or ridiculous.

It felt pretty clever to me. Scotty's reaction to the 20th century computer was comedy gold. I love the moment where he cracks his knuckles, "A keyboard . . . how quaint."

They were mocking 1980s culture.

I really enjoyed The Voyage Home. It is definitely one of the top-tier Trek films. As well as being a great sci-fi film, it was also a great comedy. Also, being a trekkie made the film 10x more enjoyable. The funniest scene was probably the scene when Kirk just walks in the middle of the street and the guy calls him a dumbass. Kirk goes "Well a double dumbass to you!"

:D

I don't know if I would call it a great Sci-fi movie. The whole whale plot reminded me of Captain Planet. HOWEVER, it's definitly a great comedy!

That was my favorite scene till Sulu came out of the closet. Now, I laugh at his San Francisco line. :woot:

Whales aside, it's still Trek, so it's automatically Sci-Fi!!! Argh. :)

I need to watch that San Francisco line again.
I haven't seen the movie in 2 years.
Is it on YouTube?

:csad:

You know, alot of that was actually pretty funny.

I just bought the movie last week.
I think it's one of the best, with Khan and First Contact.
And the plot about the whales does have a good message, you can't deny that.

Thanks for the link Catman.

Nimoy was the director right? Why is someone directing him dammit!

Spock: Your use of language has altered since our arrival. It is laced with, shall I say more colorful metaphors. "Double dumbass on you", and so forth.
--------

Gillian: Your friend was messing up my tanks, and messing up my whales.
Spock: They like you very much, but they are not the hell your whales.
Gillian: I suppose they told you that?
Spock: The hell they did.

----------
Kirk: Spock, where's the power you promised me?
Spock: One damn minute, Admiral.

Best Star trek movie, really captures the spirit of the show better than any of the other movies.

Kirk: Spock, about those colorful metaphors. I don't think you should use them.
Spock: Why not?
Kirk: For one thing, you don't quite have the knack for it.
Spock: I see.
Kirk: And also, it's not always nessecary to tell the truth.
Spock: I cannot tell a lie.
Kirk: I don't mean lie, but you could exaggerate.
Spock: Exaggerate?
Kirk: Exaggerate! You used to do it all the time, can't you remember?
Spock: The hell I can't.

The Director's Cut of Star Trek: TMP captured it best. *runs away* The Voyage Home captures best the comedic episodes like The Trouble with Tribbles.

The motion picture was far too much of a space opera, didn't capture the character element of the show enough.

Seconded. Also once you see the special features, and learn what all went into the first film, one does develop a new sense of appreciation for it. And you see that it wasn't made to compete with Star Wars, as so many Lucas-ites accuse it.

The motion picture reminded me of that episode with Clint Howard. You spent 40 minutes thinking the crew was gonna die then it turns out that it was some little kid messing with them. The movie is the same thing. Its just some dish or whatever. lol.

The cast and crew didn't make it to compete. It was the studio. And the studio was the one that ruined the movie. They forced Robert Wise to start production without a script and then rushed him into finishing it.

Had the studio allowed Robert Wise some freedom, TMP, would have ended up being one of the great sci-fi movies along with Wise's classic The Day The Earth Stood Still.

TMP feels more like a rip-off of 2001 with a star trek spin, rather than a star trek movie.

STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, is the fourth film in the Star Trek franchise, and is definitely the best in terms of character interaction at least. With Leonard Nimoy returning to direct, he excels himself after his effort on the previous film.

A mysterious probe has come to Earth, disabling all power in it's way, discovering that it needs a response from an extinct animal, the hump back whale, Admiral Kirk(William Shatner) and his crew must travel back in time and retrieve a whale, their destination is late twentieth century San Francisco.

More than ever, the portrayal of the famous characters is brilliant, building upon and drawing from many years of continual development. The narrative itself allowing for a master class in character play, as they each bounce off of each other with the utmost quality.

Humour is a major part of this film, producing laughter recurrently from the audience through subtle jokes through to slapstick, really showing the integrity of the characters who can stand up to the test of time in every sense.

The effects are of a good enough level that they cause no discomfort compared to contemporary movies, coupled with the overwhelming amount of charm, and the well rounded new characters, it can easily entertain audiences of today.

Making various references to socio-political situations of the time, and the unique position of the characters, the narrative is one of the strongest of the franchise, whilst containing farcical elements, it plays them off nicely to entertain and amuse without detracting anything away from the story.
Overall, this film has an abundance to offer most viewers, anyone familiar with the franchise must watch this hugely entertaining and creatively unique step into the world of Sci-Fi. In a word, Brilliant.

In a way thats true. Especially in the original cut.

Agreed.

He was better here and 3 Men and a Baby than on Search for Spock. :o
