Strange New Worlds Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - General Discussion Thread

He certainly doesn’t *look* the part. I hope he’s as fun as Chris Pine that can balance the William Shatner of it, but I doubt it.

Yeah, so far-- based purely on those two pics-- this doesn't work for me. But I'll wait until I actually see him, y'know, perform the part before I go all final judgement on him. That is key.

The sooner those uniforms go the better, though. They're not doing him or anyone else any favours.

Well that shut me up. The minute I saw we won’t see Kirk until the last episode they cast him lol.

funny it is that we always see these younger versions of Kirk but never Picard. Can’t beat sir pat stew

I'm thinking Kirk is commanding another vessel before the Enterprise so they're exploring a Kirk before the Enterprise.

That’s the speculation. So perhaps only limited, “guest starring” appearances of Kirk. It would certainly be odd if they’re already planning a transition from Pike to Kirk — before the series has even premiered! (It would also be a “dis” to Anson Mount. :ebr:)

Season two began production only last month. Ergo, there’s at least one full season (10 episodes) without Kirk…?

They've got Kirk, Spock...they're totally gonna do a reboot or remake of TOS, aren't they?

Pretty much.

I wonder how much longer will pass until they finally just go for a show set a generation or two post-TNG and we see the adventures of the Enterprise-F or G and her crew.

Well… there is the Tom Hardy Cenobite version of Picard. :funny:

But yeah, I figured a reveal in the final episode of season one would make sense. But nope! Guess we’re getting their version of Kirk much sooner. I’m not familiar with the actor but I hope he does well. He doesn’t really look like Shatner or Pine to me but that doesn’t really matter.

I'm expecting this now. This is becoming what feels like a setup for a remake of the original series. It's basically an excuse to make the original 1960s produced series irrelevant. The first glimpse of this was the casting for the La'an Noonien-Sign character. There is no reason for this character to be in this series, let allow the character to be a Starfleet officer serving on the Enterprise with Spock, Uhura, and in season 2, most likely with Kirk. Now Akiva Goldsman has hinted Khan might be introduced at some point soon. I have no doubt this show is basically being set up for Kirk vs Khan with La'an being conflicted about which side she'll take. Then this will bring in another spin-off show focused on Khan. There is no creative thinking in Star Trek anymore. There is no one who wants to truly respect this franchise anymore. It's all being remade for no good reason.

Goldman and Kurtzman say they are big fans of Star Trek but to me, it seems that they want to redo what came before and rethink what Star Trek is. They'll say they will honor what came before because they are fans but they don't care. This was oblivious from the very first season of STD. Star Trek now is violence, swearing, modern-day dialogue, and member-berries.

God, how I miss people like Rick Berman, Jeri Taylor, and Ira Steven Behr overseeing Star Trek.

Wow. That is exactly what I wanted to summarize.

I would like to add also the dumbing down of future humans to sound more like us. IMO it just feels wrong for someone in the 24th century to say "Dude" and "Man"

The best response I can give to this is... sheer f#!%ing hubris. :cwink:

Also, don't be shocked if we get Star Trek: Stargazer after STP wraps up. Because, you know, we are all asking for a prequel series set during Jean-Luc Picard's time as captain of the USS Stargazer.

Should they recast the TNG, I would like to see an adaptation of the Star Trek novel called Federation where Kirk and Picard's crews met in a singularity.

They may just continue it where TOS left off. A season 4 of sorts. But if it is a remake, it's been 59 years since TOS so I think they've more than waited a respectful amount of time before remaking it.

But I'm not thrilled about this casting. He was ok in Vampire Diaries, but that character was a far cry from Kirk.

ha I would love this

But which hot young CW actor is going to shave their head to play Picard?

Tom Holland, he’s playing everyone these days. Give him ten seconds and he’ll be playing you!

I am a bit surprised that they went with an actor who is almost 40 to play Kirk. He doesn’t really look it but I guess I was expecting a younger cadet version of the character if he showed up. Especially since Uhura is so young in this and I always assumed that she was somewhat close to Kirk age-wise. I guess it does make sense that he would be older though since he’s her commanding officer.

Based on how stupid humanity is right now, I'd consider it very likely that we DO talk like that.

If Anson Mount were much younger, he would've actually been a better choice to play a young Captain Kirk than Paul Wesley. There are certain things about his version of Pike that is more like Kirk and he has more of a look of Shatner than he does of Jeffrey Hunter.

In fact, if Paul Wesley were older, he actually looks more like Pike than Kirk.

Can’t say I really see the Shatner resemblance with Mount. I’m glad he’s not playing Kirk; Pike has only made a few appearances before these shows so it allows Anson to do his own thing with the role a little bit more. If he was playing Kirk, I feel like he’d have to stick closer to previous portrayals.

I've been watching the original series again, haven't seen it in years. I did notice in the new characters that they have shown, pilot Ortegas is in a red shirt. I thought helmsman were gold shirts. Unless she is just filling in for the helmsman. Anyway the updated bridge looks nicer.

If they really do a TOS reboot, I wonder if they will go into the Motion Picture era with the grey pajama uniforms.

Ha. Yeah I don’t know. Guess they’ll choose something that looks good on camera.

maybe once Picard finishes we’ll be more likely to know in which direction they’re likely to go in
