Starz Original Series SPARTACUS: Blood and Sand

Is Crixus in the prequel? Btw, who's that gorgeous redhead in the background?

He is going to be one of the main characters of the prequel.

Wikipedia shows that he'll be in it (yeah, I know, Wikipedia...)
If he is, maybe they'll show how he became the champion of Capua.

I think they will, at the start of the prequel another one of Batiatus' Gladiators (the guy in the poster) is champion. I think Crixus must beat him or something... sounds like it will be a good series, building up Crixus' back story a lot.

I hope we get to see how Ashur and Crixus became enemies.

That would be cool to see Blas.

Pfft, tell me about it, man.
At first, I kinda hated him, but he really turned into a great character.

I hated Crixus too. He was not much more than a bully.

I adored how much Crixus and the other characters changed over the course of the season. It's literally the best writing on TV, IMO.

I can't wait to see the prequel.

I seem to recall one episode that showed how Crixus broke Ashur's leg, in a flashback.

At the start of the season my feelings were:

  • Loved Spartacus
    Loved Varro
    Loved Doctore
    Loved Batiatus
    Loved Illythia
    Liked Lucretia
    Hated Crixus
    Hated Ashur

As the season came to an end:

  • Didn't like Spartacus at all
    Still loved Varro
    Still loved Doctore
Love/hated Batiatus for who he was
Love/hated Illythia for who she was and what she became. It also helps that she is smoking hot.
Ambivalent towards Lucretia. She seemed kind of pathetic to me near the end.
Loved Crixus and how he grew to become the Gaul he was before he became a gladiator. (Based on his conversations with others and the slave gir, can't remember her name.)
Loved Ashur for being one of the most devious and actually intelligent characters on the show.

I always seem to end my posts with great praise for the show. Which it rightfully deserves. Some people saw it as porn and a 300 movie rip-off but the show is so much more.

Does anybody know how many episodes the prequel will be? Is it the same has season 1 with 12 or 13 episodes?

6 episodes.

Btw, I saw the last episode.

DAMN.

Yeah, DAMN.

But it was a perfect bloodbath of an ending. Adored they did that. Historically, the escaping slaves were only able to free some of the gladiators, not all, and Batiatus survived, but I like it better this way.

The show came full circle for Spartacus.

Spartacus Recasting Lead Role
Starz decides to continue with series, in the wake of Andy Whitfield's departure.

The hunt for a new Spartacus has begun. In the wake of Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield sadly having to leave the series after his cancer returned, the question became what the producers of the series would do. Recently, executive producer Steven S. DeKnight said they were wrestling with simply ending Spartacus or recasting the role.

EW.com's Michael Ausiello now reports that Starz has begun searching for a new star for the series, sending out a casting notice looking for "a Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the 'smart, intense, passionate' title role." Ausiello also notes that Starz is looking for an actor who has an authentic British accent and that the role will include a three-year contract.

In the meantime, the prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, is still scheduled to air in January.

I had a strong feeling they'd go witht his option. This is Starz's only hit show so they have no choice. With that said, boy do i feel bad for whoever gets the role. People are going to criticize him up the ass for not being anything like Andy Whitfield. Hopefully with time, the new guy can come into his own as Spartacus.

I tend to agree, they really had no other choice. Moving the story away from Spartacus wouldn't work.

The new guy will have some big shoes to fill.

If Starz doesn't recast Spartacus, they will probably be forced to cancel season two because all the actors & crew members have to work, and they will find another job instead of keep waiting for Andy to return. I'm sure they really hate to do this, and they understand the risk of the audience not wanting to support a show that lost its main lead, but it's a gamble that they must take. I'll watch the first few eps to see how the new Spartacus holds up, and if the show retains its quality from season one I'll keep watching.

Tough role to recast but it is what was going to happen in any case. Now I start looking forward to another actor's interpretation.

You know it'll be interesting to see how people who aren't aware of the recast will react to this. I'm sure there are tons and tons of people who watch the show but don't have any clue about Andy's cancer and the recast. I those are the people who are most likely to drop the show once they see that Andy is gone.

They were never going to cancel the show just because Andy has cancer. This is business, only the almighty dollar dictates what will and will not happen. If recasting Bond after Connery left happened, then its a no brainer that recasting Spartacus was the only way forward.

DeKnight said on his Facebook, for him it's either recast or cancel. He can't see any way to wait (is the inference) and doesn't want to retool the show so much it isn't about Spartacus anymore. If he can't find a man like Andy, intense, passionate and smart, then he's willing to kill his golden goose.

I respect him for that. He's sticking to his guns, it was the network suits who were trying to make fly that someone else other than Spartacus becoming the lead character.

They want the draw of the show and the coin it brings to Starz, the guys who are suggesting that are people who don't have integrity. I think Steven does.

Hate the fact that Andy had a relapse and the whole recasting thing. :(

I'll probably check out the first couple of episodes of the new season just to see if the show is still worth watching without Andy in it.

It royally sucks. Andy was on his way, he had a break and was doing a terrific job and this happens.

It's not fair, but if the show continues they said they'll give Andy a job in some capacity to keep him involved.

He believes in the show and he loves the stories. I think that's the best thing for them to do in the situation.

I agree. I hope it works out.

Maybe Im thinking too far ahead but I got a question: Does anybody know if the Prequel episodes will be released as a separate DVD or will it be part of the Second season?

TIA

Probably a separate DVD. Who knows how long it will take for the second season to air.

Ya they will most likely release it seperately since it is a seperate show from the franchise and S2 will most likely still have 13 episodes.

I think so too, particularly since they still haven't found the new actor for Spartacus to replace Andy Whitfield yet.

I think it's a publicity stunt. A slight mention in one article and all of a sudden he's in talks? Puhleeze.

They wanted a relative unknown for Spartacus the first time out, I think they have intended to do the same this time out too.

Even if it weren't for that, I think WM is all kinds of bad for this part. Yeah, he's cut, but he's too young and he doesn't have the passionate nature Andy had. At least I've never seen it in any of the roles he'd done before.

He's pretty cool and aloof in most of the parts he plays. Unless he can seriously bring something to the table he hasn't shown anyone before, I just don't see him as Spartacus.

I love Wentworth Miller and i dont care what anyone says, i loved all 4 seasons of Prison Break but.....he's no Spartacus. He just isn't.
