The Stand movie delayed, Director to adapt King’s Revival

Since directing the adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, which brought in over $300 million at the global box office, Josh Boone has been a busy man. Not only has he penned the script for an X-Men spin-off in The New Mutants and a new adaptation of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, but Boone has also been working to adapt the gargantuan Stephen King novel The Stand into a feature film. Now, Deadline brings word that Boone is tabling The Stand adaptation for the time being so he can tackle another King book for the big screen, 2014’s Revival.

Boone has already penned the adaptation and is working with producer Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Fifty Shades of Grey). The project has been submitted to Universal for consideration but could find another home should they pass.
The novel is officially described as follows:
“In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs—including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.’
“Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of thirteen, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-thirties—addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate—Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.”
Boone went on to say that he still intends to direct The Stand and revealed he has verbal commitments from actors for the film’s potential cast. The film rights have lapsed from Warner Bros. however, meaning the project has returned to CBS Films and could land at another studio in the future.

Cool book, read it a few weeks ago. Won't be surprised if the set up the ending more overtly... Or if they just alter the ending itself entirely. It's very shocking and it stays with you for a couple of days, but there's an element of "Well, that kind of came out of nowhere..."

The book has a great premise but it lacked polish.

I spoiled myself and read a detailed rundown of the book. The ending sounds so [blackout]depressing[/blackout].

So, who should we be imagining for the lead roles? Seems like there are 2 main characters, right?

^ Two big mains, but since it takes one from his childhood, through his teenage years, 30's/40's/50's you'd need a few actors... No idea who I'd cast.

I wonder if they'll go chronological like the book, or put it into more of a flashback structure.

I feel like this is going to be another one that's stuck in development hell.

Hell Yea. Really interesting story. If the casting is on point, this will be a very strong movie.

Anybody have any good suggestions on who could play Rev. Charles Jacobs aka Dan Jacobs The Lightning Portrait Artist?

I had some ideas about casting Jamie Morton and I must say, it would be excellent if this was reality

Young Jamie- Jacob Tremblay

Teenage Jamie (early rock'n'roll)- Tye Sheridan

Not sure who would be good for Adult Rocker/ Heroin Junkie Jamie. Jake Gyllenhaal was my first thought but his eyes are nothing like the other younger actors above so it would have to be somebody with softer features who would be believable as a junkie who used o be a good kid.

Josh Boone Talks Revival

Josh Boone talks about Revival in an new interview.

In the meantime, Boone has another King-based project that’s being fast-tracked to the screen: Revival. He enthused, “[T]hat one is ready to go. My line producer, production designer, and VFX supervisor from Fault budgeted the film. Michael De Luca is producing, which is amazing. He produced The Social Network, Moneyball, and Captain Phillips; but he also wrote John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness, so he’s a secret horror nerd like us. Unlike these studio projects we’re working [on]–The Stand, Vampire Chronicles, New Mutants–where there are so many voices chiming in, we’ve been able to develop Revival in a very pleasant bubble. I wrote it on spec, and we are putting together the financing now. Very exciting. I think it’s one of King’s very best books.”

Russell Crowe Cast In Revival

I have reported earlier that casting was ongoing for Revial and now it’s clear that Russell Crowe has been cast as Rev Jacobs and that Josh Boone will direct his own script…right after he’s done with New Mutants.

I’ve had very, very different screenwriting experiences based on how the project comes together. For example, I have a good relationship with Stephen King, so when I wanted to adapt his novel Revival I really just went and asked him. I was able to write it in a very pleasant bubble and we attached Russell Crowe. I plan to make that right after New Mutants.

Mike Flanagan Talks Revival

Mike Flanagan talks about his work on Revival. A first draft of the script is done and King loves it.

“It’s a return to cosmic horror which I think is so fun. It is relentlessly dark and cynical and I’m enjoying the hell out of that. I think a lot of King’s work is like this too, there’s a safety in the sentimental approach to a lot of those stories and this is just bleak and mean and I like it for that. I haven’t gotten to end a movie that way since, geez, Absentia maybe? Maybe Ouija? I get to be like ‘Oh you want a dark ending? Cool, get ready. I’ve gotten pretty good about digging my heels in on stuff like that. It’s a lot easier to do, I can talk a big game when I’ve got Stephen King in my corner advocating for the same ending.”

I haven't read it, but Doctor Sleep was cool so I'm interested. Crowe is a strong get in general.

Flanagan is two for two in terms of Stephen King adaptations so this most likely will be just as good.
