The 13-episode Under the Dome, set in a small town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome, will open Monday, June 24 and will air in the Monday 10 PM slot.

Tassler spent a long time talking about summer series Under The Dome, a Steven Spielberg-produced adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which was originally developed for sibling pay cable network Showtime. After the project’s option at Showtime lapsed, Tassler was given the script, about a small town sealed off from the rest of the world.”I read it over the weekend and I just loved it,” she said. “Every since Jericho for us, we loved these big-idea shows. And the auspices aren’t too shabby… “It provides an unique opportunity, if we package it properly to do a big summer event. In summers you have to makes some noise.” While Under The Dome is envisioned as an ongoing series, in case there is no second season, “there will be a key piece of information that the audience will have by the end of the summer,” Tassler said.

I assume we'll be getting some casting fairly soon then.

CBS Reveals Debut Date for Stephen King's Under the Dome
What to expect from CBS' summer series.

At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, CBS announced that Under the Dome will premiere on Monday, June 24th at 10pm. Based on the Stephen King novel, the series comes from writer/executive producer Brian K. Vaughan (Y the Last Man, Lost), with King also executive producing. While Under the Dome doesn’t begin filming until next month, CBS looks to be very invested in it – revealing the first promo will be aired during the Super Bowl and showing us a video in which King and Vaughan spoke about the series, as we were shown production art.

Based on what was shown, it looks like Under the Dome is CBS’ answer to The Walking Dead, with its tale of how normal people try to cope in the wake of a bizarre crisis – here, an invisible dome that suddenly surrounds a town, cutting the residents off from everyone on the outside. As Vaughan put it, “It’s going to be bring out the best in some people and the worst in other people.”

Jokes about the similarity to the story of The Simpsons Movie aside (King’s novel was being written at the same time as that film), the art we saw from Under the Dome was intense and outright gory – showing a cow sliced in two by the dome’s sudden appearance, and what happens when an airplane smashes into the dome, as King described how we’ll see the pilots point of view as “the nose [of the plane] starts to crumble”, before body parts begin falling to the ground. Not to mention the dome has some other odd effects, with Vaughan noting there’s “Electromagnetic potential to it. If you get too close to it, it’ll cause pacemakers to explode out of your body,” as we saw art of a man whose pacemaker is ripped out of his chest, with predictably dire results.

Said King, “It’s very exciting to see the idea of taking the book and possibly expanding it. Because that’s what TV’s for. TV is an expansive medium. The novel only covers a very short period of time and the idea of a TV series is to extend it not just for a week or two weeks but for months.” King also was excited by Steven Spielberg’s involvement as a producer (the show comes from Amblin), remarking, “His view on American life and my viewpoint on American life are similar.”

CBS president Nina Tassler said they saw Under the Dome -- which had been initially developed at Showtime -- as the “Opportunity to do a big summer event,” and that the high profile team – which also includes Lost’s Jack Bender as a producer/director and Neal Baer (ER, Law and Order: SVU) as showrunner alongside Vaughan -- would help them “make some noise.”

Tassler said that storywise, “There will be a key piece of information the audience will have by the end of the summer,” but following Under the Dome’s 13-episode initial season, “We’d like to build it into a summer franchise.”

We Bought A Zoo co-star Colin Ford has become the first actor cast in Under The Dome, a 13-episode series from Steven Spielberg and Stephen King to air this summer. Based on King’s bestselling 2009 novel, the series is set in Chester’s Mill, a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away. Ford will play Joe, a teenager living in Chester’s Mill, a very smart kid who’s understandably freaked out when he discovers that the mysterious barrier covers the whole town — and both his parents are outside of it. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo helmer Niels Arden Oplev is directing the first episode from a script by Brian K. Vaughan. Spielberg’s Amblin Television, which developed the project, co-produces with CBS TV Studios. Neal Baer serves as showrunner. DreamWorks’ Stacey Snider is executive producing with Spielberg, King, Baer, Vaughn, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. In addition to playing Matt Damon’s teen son in We Bought A Zoo, Ford, repped by UTA and Management 360, played Young Sam Winchester on the CW’s Supernatural, recently guest starred on NBC’s Revolution and voices the title character on the Disney Jr. animated series Jake And The Never Land Pirates.

Scoop: CSI: NY Star Heads Under the Dome

Natalie Martinez is keeping alive her streak of playing TV law-enforcers.

The actress, currently recurring on CSI: NY as Det. Jamie Lovato, has been cast in CBS’ upcoming Under the Dome as Linda, a young, ambitious deputy who is fiercely loyal to Sheriff Duke Perkins, the man who runs a tight ship in the town of Chester’s Mill.

The 13-episode Under the Dome is based on Stephen King’s 2009 novel of the same name, in which a community finds itself trapped beneath a massive, transparent barrier. The situation soon turns to chaos.

Martinez previously played Det. Ariana Sanchez on Detriot 1-8-7, and had big-screen roles in End of Watch and Death Race.

In related news, Alex Koch has been cast as Junior Rennie, son of the local politician and car dealer; Junior is described as “a smart, secretly deeply disturbed college freshman who’s desperately in love with local waitress Angie,” who wants out of Chester’s Mill.

Under the Dome is produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and will premiere Monday, June 24, at 10/9c.

'Life Unexpected's' Britt Robertson Joins CBS' 'Under the Dome'

She'll play a waitress and aspiring nurse in the summer series based on the book by Stephen King.

Britt Robertson is going to Chester's Mill.

The former Life Unexpected star has joined the cast of CBS' summer drama based on the novel by Stephen King, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The series follows residents in the Chester's Mill community as they deal with the postapocalyptic conditions that ensue when a strange barrier mysteriously encapsulates the town.

Robertson will play Angie, an attractive young waitress and aspiring nurse who has always dreamed of escaping Chester's Mill.

She joins a cast that so far includes CSI: New York's Natalie Martinez as Deputy Linda, a young, ambitious deputy who is fiercely loyal to Sheriff Duke Perkins and runs a tight ship in the town. Newcomer Alex Koch will play Junior Rennie, the son of the local politician and car dealer who is a smart and deeply disturbed college freshman who is desperately in love with Angie. Jake and the Never Land Pirates' Colin Ford rounds out the gang thus far as casting on the drama continues.

CBS Television Studios will produce the drama, which was picked up straight to series, in association with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television. Neal Baer (A Gifted Man, Law & Order: SVU), King, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider and comic scribe Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Lost) -- who penned the Under the Dome television adaptation -- will serve as executive producers. Director Niels Arden Oplev (Unforgettable, Sweden's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) will direct the first episode.

In addition to starring on the CW's Life Unexpected, Robertson's credits include the network's short-lived witchy drama The Secret Circle and features Dan in Real Life and Scream 4. She's repped by Innovative and Jackoway Tyerman.

Strong will play Phil, a popular radio DJ and indie rock fanatic, a charismatic figure with a dark secret.

Under The Dome is set in Chester’s Mill, a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. Hinds will play Carolyn Hill, a take-no-prisoners Los Angeles entertainment attorney who is trapped in Chester’s Mill while driving through town with her partner, and their daughter, on their way to deliver their teenaged daughter to a camp for troubled youth. Hinds, repped by Greene & Assoc., also recurs on the CW’s Cult.

After an extensive casting process, Mike Vogel (Pan Am) has been tapped as the lead of Under The Dome, CBS’ 13-episode summer series from Steven Spielberg and Stephen King based on King’s bestselling 2009 novel. This represents one of the final castings on the series set in Chester’s Mill, a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away. Vogel will play Barbie, an Army veteran, who is in Chester’s Mill on a mysterious mission. Vogel, repped by WME and manager Geordie Frey, recently shot a major recurring arc on the upcoming A&E series Bates Motel as well as indies McCanick and Jake Squared.
