So I heard about this movie like a year or so ago but I never read and after watching the trailer I am confused. What is this about?

It's about a dystopian future where the biggest form of escape for most people is a wildly popular virtual reality MMORPG. The game is pretty expansive and is full of worlds based off of pop culture. When the creator of the game dies it's revealed that he put a complex easter egg hunt in his game and whoever completes it inherits his company. Hilarity ensues.

And while our main character is on said easter egg hunt they beat you over the head with pop culture references that they felt the need to not only show, but explain because hey, you might not get them.

This trailer kind of reminded me of that scene in Indian in the Cupboard in which the kid brings Darth Vader, RoboCop and a T-Rex to life for a few seconds.

I don't mean to be rude but folks hafta understand what a teaser trailer means. It teases you some awesome bits from the movie to get you hyped up about it.

Yeah, if only it did that. Instead it showed me a generic YA protagonist on a generic dystopian future and a basic core idea (virtual game world) that's so done and done in (probably better) sci-fi it could only differentiate itself by recycling bits of (also, probably better) pop culture films and videogames WB has the rights to.

It's like Spielberg doesn't even remember his own movies anymore because this whole fiasco screams "You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could" to me.

Wreck-In-Ralph (the easiest comparision, probably) still made an effort to present a compelling protagonist in its trailers, not this "this is the only place I feel I mean something" crap.

That is a prime aspect of most of Spielberg's protagonists.

This trailer was meant to capture our attention, not explain the plot. It worked for me.

Nailed it. The Easter eggs/references in the trailer, mixed with the all out action, are there to grab the eye of people who love those things but may not have an attachment to the book.

It's a solid trailer, I reckon we'll get a more plot heavy second trailer either with Justice League or Star Wars. Focusing on Wade and the Oasis for the first trailer makes sense;

who hurt you?

I heard "missing millions" as "missing millennials" and...that couldn't be more of a topical theme.

who hurt you?

Look, if you like it, that's fine. I just had high hopes with this movie because Spielberg has made some of my favorite movies ever, and I was sorely disappointed with this trailer, just not feeling it at all.

I expect younger ones that don't get all the references to not be as excited, but hey. If you were born before like 1989 this should be right up your alley.

He's laughing in joy all the way through the trailer. :o

Heh. I was born way before 1989 and it takes a lot more than nostalgia to get me to watch stuff like this. It's obvious to me that boomers and post-boomers are NOT the target demographic.

So is The Iron Giant replacing
Ultraman
, then?
