Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One"

Hook is vastly superior to 1941, Always, The Terminal, The Lost World, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I know Steven hates it, but it has some magical elements, including its score and moments of pure joy. Most of those films I just mentioned are cloying or empty.

No worries, Ready Player One is not in that camp. I'd put it closer to the Temple of Doom, Minority Report, and Catch Me If You Can tier.

I agree with this

I still have to see this movie. Probably will catch it and Pacific Rim 2 next week.

I'm not a fan of Hook at all. I think it's one of the least of Spielberg's movies.

I also think Spielberg hasn't really done anything exceptional in a long time and I hope Ready Player One recaptures some old Spielbergian magic like some reviews have said.

I've never seen Hook. Should I now that I'm an adult? Or is one of those movies that work because you've seen them thousands of times as a kid?

I think Hook is great. It's a bit corny but the performances of Williams, Hoffman and Hoskins make it worth watching.

The Terminal is a fine enjoyable film. Minor Spielberg but a typical "good feel" movie. Always is a harmless romance film that's 10 times more watchable than Hook, which is just obnoxious.

Here's a list of actual bad Spielberg movies:

-1941
-Hook
-The Lost World Jurassic Park (this one is the worst, an actual cynical cash grab and easily his most laziest and phoned in film).

That's it. Crystal Skull was disappointing but I'll go to bat for the first hour.

It's bad. It's easily his most obnoxious film right next to 1941. The kids actors are awful (which is mind boggling considering how great Spielberg is working with kids). Hook feels like it was directed by a lesser director trying to ape Spielberg.

I just listen to John Williams score and imagine a much better film.

Imo I think you should watch it because I love it even to this day. I think it’s great. It’s a matter of preference and opinion.

Looking forward to catching this over the weekend. Hopefully it's a fun, enjoyable film.

It's not that much of a spoiler, he was in the first trailer.

Double Toasted's review got me excited. Can't wait to see it tomorrow.

Ugh, I know my son wants to go see this, and I'm not feeling it. This thread gives a little bit of hope that I might actually enjoy it.

tzarinna, I say see it with your son. I think it will have things you will enjoy.

I'm seeing this tomorrow. Can't wait!

Just got home. I loved it and had a ton of fun! What an experience. Nothing like seeing a Spielberg movie for the first time

Pretty excited to view this on the big screen within the next week!

Pretty great fun

Nostalgia was good but it definitely reeled me in with the characters.

If you defend the first hour of KOTCS, I'd say the first act of Hook is far better. The lead-up to Peter going to Neverland with the "abduction" shot like a horror movie, and the use of Maggie Smith as an elderly Wendy forcing him to remember the magic, and his introduction to Tinkerbell is all very good...

It gets a little sideways at times after that, but never toxically so like Always. Always is a train wreck of a movie that he never even talks about anymore. The biggest issue is that Spielberg is awkward at filming the romance, and Richard Dreyfuss is entirely miscast as the lead in this story. It was the first and last time Spielberg cast someone because they were a friend. The only thing watchable in it is Audrey Hepburn as the angel. Otherwise, the movie is kind of shamed in how Ghost did the same overall story so much better a year later.

When Peter goes to Neverland the movie turns into a trainwreck.

"Pleasant" is probably the best word to describe Always. It's just ... there. Not good enough to uplift, not bad enough to annoy. It's probably his most forgotten film, but I actually think the film is more personal to Spielberg than some realize because it came out in the same year as his divorce.

Glad y'all enjoyed it. For pure entertainment value, it may be hard to beat this year for me.

Agreed. It's probably my 2nd favorite film I've seen this year.

Easily in my top 3
