Steven Spielberg's ''Terra Nova''

Boring.
The whole "family" aspect of the show is killing it. Instead of "Alphas" or "Heroes" they gave us "No Ordinary Family".

Really disappointed.

Alphas and Heroes.... those are really top drawer for you, huh?

:hehe:

Really? I like the family aspect...It makes sense to have the show partially focus on family as this is a new start for humanity.

I wish the daughter was getting more focused on instead of the son and well have the daughter not a goody 2 shoes.

I like that she's a geek. It's not especially convincing with her specifically, given that the actress is smoking hot, but it's believable that one of the kids would follow after their super-genius mom.

I think if it was just the two daughters then the family aspect would be ok. Sadly they had to include the son who is just a big walking cliché of a character :(

Still pretty bad at times and I suspect he will get worse again.

The son doesn't look even biologically related to the mixing of both parents, where the daughters do...

he never got better, they only had less focus on him. He's a terrible character, which could possibly have been saved by a decent delivery... but that didn't happen. Fail on both accounts, both writing, and acting.

I had/have a theory that the son isn't theirs or at least not the father's son.

BTW, did the younger daughter actress has been replaced ( she looked older in the 3rd ep ) after the pilote or I need to tweek my facial recognition interface ?

Same kid, as far as I can tell.

The son totally looks like the rest of the family, too. I don't get why everyone thinks he's weird-looking.

blue eyes, brown hair, caucasian vs. black hair, brown eyes, and olive skin. The daughters look like a mix... the son does not

That's not unusual. I've seen plenty of mixed families where kid wasn't dark skinned at all. The kid just happened to take after the dad who is white. It's not uncommon at all.

I come from a family where people look drastically different. My dad's side is mostly Arabic and Indian. I've got one uncle who's dark enough that he could be mistaken for a black guy while my dad is all the way on the other side of the spectrum, almost light enough that he could pass for caucasian. Maybe some of you just aren't all that familiar with families where there's a whole lot of mixed genetics at work. The son fits in just fine with the rest of the family.

I'm waiting until the 5th episode to make up my mind about this show.

Eh. Just use the BSG explanation. Jamie Bamber playing Edward James Olmos' son? The dude is white as can be. Simple explanation: Lee took after his mother, while his brother took after Adama. Same here. The girls take after their mother, the son takes after the father.

The family's okay but Stephen Lang's character is far more interesting.

Stephen Lang's characters are always more interesting. I love that guy.

I really like this show. A lot. I love it because it incorporates a lot of stuff I like. It is a sci-fi show, but very earthy. It reminds me of Firefly in that respect, and in fact, "Wash" reminds me a lot of Zoe Washburne, for that matter.

Regardless, the family aspect really sets it apart for me, and gives it an emotional relevance. Something I can hold on to other than just concepts. That they make them relevant to the plot is even better. And I think they've handled it very well. I compare these teens' romantic interests with the ones from No Ordinary Family and I praise the Lord for his mercy and goodness. So not only is it a spiritual successor to Firefly, but Lost in Space as well.

I understand the complaints about having a case-of-the week format. I also look at the history of serial tv shows on television and it's pretty clear that unless you're JJ Abrams, or on premium cable TV, you simply will not gain success with a serial storyline. You can have a background thread, like the Sixers, but if they did go serial with this level of writing, the show would go the way of Fast Forward pretty danged quickly. Also, iirc, sci-fi works better with the case of the week format, yes?

I can understand the cliche complaints. The show is not top-level. It's just a decent sci-fi show. And if no one is interested in decent Sci-fi shows, why write a top-notch sci-fi show, when a top notch crime procedural will get both the discerning eye and the common viewer?

Still not sold, but this week's episode was a step in the right direction, although still not exactly impressive. But definately better than the last two weeks. I think if they keep the single serving nature of the show focused on the children, while the overall story arc remains active between the adults, the show may succeed.

I'm ok with single serving episodes, as long as the serve the overall narrative. This episode worked perfectly that way. Single serving balanced with overall arc. I think had this been the second episode of the season, instead of the last two mind-numbing episodes, I'd be a more happy audience member.

ps. And you just know that Taylor is going to find the spy, and the skidouche son is going to be the patsy fall guy, and then the father and son will run to the sixers.

I too am having trouble staying intrigued by the show. I think the problem is focus. Not my focus but the focus of the show. There are way too many questions given at a slow pace, too many mundane events (some are fine) but there is nothing else to look forward to. The show needs to stop with all the strands of questions and mysteries and keep delving into the main story and two or three (much) smaller side stories.

I also find the wife to be annoying because I don't think the actress sells the character's "genius" and because she is rather dismissive and condescending towards her husband.

Also, what the heck is up with the soldier boy and his Victorian era speech about courtships and such? It's interesting but it is another story strand that detracts from the focus of the show.

This should have been episode 3, at least the show seemed to go somwhere this time.

But still a lot of problems that make the balance go towards annoying instead of interesting.

This weeks ep was better, but why didn't Mira just tell Jim if she wanted to convince him Taylor is so bad? Stephen Lang is the highlight of the show, so much screen presence.
