Studios Face Off Against Movie Theater Owners

I actually like the whole theatre-going experience. It's an event. I think there's just something missing when you watch movies at home. It's like going out to eat at a nice restaurant. Technically, you can cook what you're ordering at home if you really want to. But that's not nearly as fun as going out.

Especially when he's paying! :awesome:

Who the hell are you, and why are you spelling theater all willy-nily?

Maybe, just maybe, instead of putting "underperforming" (crap) movies On-Demand, Hollywood could actually start making GOOD movies again.

Hollywood makes crappy movies, and then the movie-goers have to suffer even more? Does not compute.

Seriously, there were maybe 5 movies in 2010 that really blew me away, and 3 of them were during Oscar season. I shouldn't have to wait from January to November to see a good movie. Great movies should be around all year long.

As a result, I have successfully boycotted all 2011 movies so far. You read that right. I haven't seen a single movie released in 2011, and it is currently April 16. For someone who used to see 40+ movies in the theater a year (literally), this is simply unheard of for me. I think 2011 has been (possibly) the worst year for movies EVER.

And what exactly have I missed in 2011? I'm pretty confident that NONE of these movies were worth my hard-earned money. This is pretty scary, guys:

Season of the Witch
Country Strong
The Dilemma
The Green Hornet
Barney's Version
The Heart Specialist
No Strings Attached
The Way Back
The Company Men
The Mechanic
The Rite
From Prada to Nada
The Roommate
Sanctum
The Eagle
Gnomeo and Juliet
Just Go With It
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
Cedar Rapids
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
I Am Number Four
Unknown
Drive Angry 3D
Hall Pass
The Adjustment Bureau
Beastly
Rango
Take Me Home Tonight
Battle: Los Angeles
Mars Needs Moms
Red Riding Hood
Jane Eyre
Kill the Irishman
Limitless
The Lincoln Lawyer
Paul
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
Sucker Punch
Hop
Insidious
Source Code
Arthur
Hanna
Soul Surfer
Your Highness
Rio

May the power be with you.

That list of 2011 films depresses me. So far this year, I've only seen The Green Hornet and Your Highness. The summer movie season always puts a dent in my wallet because there's always at least 5 movies I'm dying to see at that time.

And it truly sucks for the people that have had way too many crappy movie going experiences. For the most part, my experiences have ranged from "meh" to "great". I do think it matters when and where you watch the movie. Don't like crowds? Catch a matinee or watch during the weekdays. Want that unforgettable experience? Watch a movie at its midnight release. The only people at the midnight showings are the people that TRULY want to be there, not the ones that are only there because it was the only movie left that was showing.

Movie theaters > TV. I love it when old movies have return engagements in theaters, and I really don't like the idea that the studios might further endanger the theatrical exhibitors by siphoning away their livelihood to DirecTV, especially considering how little money they make screening the movies in the first place.

If you actually don't want to go see a blockbuster with a full theatre, return your Hypester membership card upon leaving, and don't let the doorknob hit you where he sho'nuff split you.

Would the Theaters really not show any of their movies ? That would be a big **** you to everyone. I am all for faster DVD releases though

When I was like 10, I used to anticipate summer blockbuster movies more than anything. Then as I got older, I started caring less. Now I don't care either way. "Big" movies come out every summer. Honestly, I enjoy watching them at home as much as I used to watching them in the theater. I don't care for the theater "experience".

Looking at that list I've only seen two of those movies. Green Hornet and Source Code. Did want to see Drive Angry 3D but missed it at the cinema. Green Hornet wasn't worth my money but Source Code totally was.

Actually, True Grit was out this year, I saw that. Nothing amazing, just True Grit...

Since when do movies have to be good to enjoy them?

True Grit was a 2010 movie.

Since when were we supposed to enjoy poorly made movies?

If you enjoy a movie then it's good. If you don;t like a movie it's bad. Personal taste. I think Indy4 is a brilliant film, but others think it's terrible. So, a good movie is not one that everyone enjoys, but one that everyone enjoys is a good movie...

Not over here it wasn't...

It really has nothing to do with us. It's about how the film makers want to **** over the film showers. If the movies don't give them some sort of discount, which the cinemas can't even afford, then the makers will take their over paid services elsewhere.

Well **** them! I'm with the cinemas.

Grumpy old man! :o

I must say that watching a movie at the theater with the big screen, surround sound, & the whole atmosphere is great. I also think that viewing a movie for $30 is quite ridiculous.

That is so true.

1. who said that you have to like every movie?
2. who said that you (you ) are the reason why they make every movie in hollywood?
3.taste?

yes there are some bad movies. but there are also some f..... fantastic movies every year.

I can probably count the number of bad theatre experiences on one hand.

I love going to the movies with a group of friends, especially to a midnight showing of a big blockbuster I've been anticipating (X-Men: First Class, anyone?). Like people have said, it can be an experience.

I love the movie theatre. There just haven't been very many movies coming out lately that I have to go see. In fact... I don't know if I've even seen a movie in theatres since X-Men Origins: Wolverine...

I like going to the theater and I think I always will. I only go for movies I really want to see. Movie going is still one of my favorite pass times.
