Studios Face Off Against Movie Theater Owners

Rocketman, your opinion is wacky. Limitless, Lincoln Lawyer, and Insidous are huge hits for their studio. Limitless ESP with $78 mil domestic vs it's modest budget. And Paul is awesome. But yes, not a exciting season. Already saw the best summer movie...The Hangover Part 2. It's like leftovers, but reheated and still tasty!

USANetwork>Summer 2011 movies.

The whole "theater experience" is becoming overrated to me, almost as much as saying something is overrated is overrated. The theater experience comes down to paying $10 to sit with disrespectful *******s who can't sit still or be quiet for 2 hours while munching on overpriced candy and popcorn and a drink so large one man's bladder is bound to explode during the most important part of the movie.

I don't see how that affects your movie experience. I can understand people using their damn phones, where the light distracts you, or when they're talking too much, but who cares if they are having a snack or a drink. Especially if it's not something smelly brought from outside the theatre.

I honestly believe the days of movie theaters are going the way of the dinosaur. With the increasing affordability of hd tvs, surround sound, and the swiftness of movies hitting dvd and blu-ray not to mention streaming it is only a matter of time before the average joe gets tired of paying high prices for crappy 3D conversions and over priced munchies and just says to heck with it. Truth be told I guess that there will always be a certain amount of people that will always like to hit the old multiplex.

People are going to s--t theaters then. I've had maybe 2 bad experiences while watching a film, and this was in the past 10 years.

Don't want to sit in with a crowd? Go to an early showing. At the very least the people that show up for these, will be quiet and respectful.

Don't want to pay for overpriced food? Eat beforehand. These are painless precautions one can take to ensure an enjoyable night out at the movies.

I've got a pretty sweet home theater setup, but I don't think I'll ever have the chance to replicate a 5-star quality cinema experience. The screen and environments are immersible, the temperatures are cooled perfectly, the sound system is glorious, and the seats are quite comfy. And unless your area is full of jerks, it doesn't matter if you're sitting alone or in a packed place. I'd go as far to say that a full crowd adds to enjoyment of the movie (especially with action, horror, and comedy genres).

I'd recommend scouting out as many surrounding cinemas as you can, so you can find the best fit. I feel really sorry for those that have been turned off by a few instances of bad nights.
Or smuggle it in.

Unless its a last minute decision to go to a movie and I'm starving I'll get something, otherwise I never get anything it's expensive and a distraction.

I have yet to see any home theatre set up that competes with the experience of sitting down in front of an IMAX screen. Rather than concede that people just want to watch stuff at home the film studios should really push IMAX technology, get it into more cities and make it a big deal. Make the experience of watching a movie on that massive screen as much an event as the movie itself. I think IMAX is one of the few remaining movie watching experiences that cannot be replicated at home. 3D TVs are becoming more and more widely available, meaning the 3D experience is not exclusive to the cinema. The sheer size of an IMAX screen makes it impossible to replicate outside of the theatre. That should be seized upon and utilised by studios if they want to keep people excited about going out to the movies rather than just waiting for the film to end up on TV.

The only people with home theatres rivaling the IMAX have the first name Lebron and the last name James.

I don't see why movie theaters would throw a fit over this. It's not as if many movies are still in theaters 2 months after their release. Not to mention this is $30. People will still go to theaters because they don't want to wait another 2 months or, the larger reason, going is an event. It's a social experience, getting out of the house with some people.

I hate going to theaters now, it's expensive (not counting the ripoff that is 3D) and usually noisy. I like going on a weekday afternoon.

If a movie is $6.00 and the 3D glasses are $4.00,why don't you get your $4.00 back when you return the glasses? I feel like I'm being ripped off.
