Study: China faces 24M bride shortage by 2020

(CNN) -- Some 24 million Chinese men of marrying age will find themselves lacking wives in 2020, partly because of the country's one-child policy, which has led to the abortion of female fetuses, state media said Monday.

Sex-specific abortions have led to a large male population born since the 1980s, the China Daily newspaper said, citing a study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The gender imbalance means that the next decade will see many intergenerational marriages: young men married to women much older than them, the study said.

China's Communist Party implemented the one-child rule three decades ago, amid fears that the country would not be able to feed a skyrocketing population. The policy has prevented about 400 million births, China Daily said.

Couples living in cities are barred from having more than one child, unless neither parent has siblings. In rural areas, the law allows for a second child under certain circumstances. And the guidelines are looser for ethnic minorities with small populations.

Enforcement varies, but usually takes the form of fines to discourage extra births.

The policy has curbed population growth, and has led to forced sterilization in some parts of the country, the U.S. State Department said. Because of a traditional preference for male heirs, many Chinese also have aborted female fetuses, according to human rights groups.

Even within the country, calls to overhaul the law have increased in recent years, China Daily said.

But China has said it will maintain its one-child policy for at least another decade.

Nearly 200 million Chinese will enter child-bearing age in the next 10 years, Minister Zhang Weiqing told China Daily two years ago. He said abandoning the policy during this period would cause "serious problems and add extra pressure on social and economic development."

"After the new birth peak ends, we may adjust the policy if there is a need," he said.

China's population, which stands at about 1.3 billion, is growing at the rate of 0.6 percent. It is expected to peak around 1.6 billion by 2050, the U.S. State Department said.

24 million? That's alot of single men in China in just ten years. I'd imagine mail-order bride to be popular in China fairly soon.

The reason China is in that position is because of their laws of the number of children you can have. I doubt theyd be too keen with millions of adults being flown in either.

I think the manufacturer of the "Roxxxy" is doing backflips right now!

It's mostly in the poor mainland areas that this happens.

What's the point of having a son to carry on the family name and traditions, if he can't even find a wife? This is what happens when you combine stupid totalitarian laws with cultural misogyny.

Yeah, I agree it's dumb, but then again when it comes to traditions Chinese people can be stubborn and simple-minded.

The term you are looking for is "Moral Hazzards".

A lot of them (poor rural areas) rather have sons because they can do all the labor.

That may be true, but Chinese people also considered having sons as "good fortune", and carrying on family's name is almost a sacred duty. It's not just because of the labor they need from their son.

Maybe they'll start having 2 or 3 men marrying one woman eventually. Or going gay will become fashionable. LOL.

A while ago, it dawned on me that to most of the current generation of Chinese people, the concept of siblings is pretty foreign. It's pretty messed up to think that most of China's young people don't even know what it's like to have brothers and sisters. I heard a study a while ago that suggested that internet / MMO addiction in China was on the rapid rise because so many kids have no-one their age to interact with at home.

I say it's karma for aborting so many girls.
And giving up so many baby girls for adoption because they're unwanted. You wonder why all the Chinese babies adopted by US couples are girls...

Well that and since they're only children (and precious precious boys!), the parents spoil them rotten.

I'm a Chinese-American woman. I have a little bitterness and redemption about all this. :oldrazz: Although thankfully I've never experienced it myself, just observations of Chinese families around me and reading up on the history, etc etc. Even members of my extended family still have deep-seated misogyny.

My roommate is a 30-y-o woman from mainland China with an older brother. She actually has trouble finding a good bf, but that may be because she's in the US now. If she goes back to China, I think things'll be easier for her. :funny:

She was lucky - the one-child policy was implemented the year she was born.

Despite the moronic policy, the CPC are still in power unfortunately. And I think you mean retribution

And the government has put the squabosh on that too. :csad:

Well, that ought to solve their population problem. There's just such balance in nature.

Yah... if they've gotten the news on China.
I almost wonder if they'll legalize polygamy...
But that would be hard to regulate.
I mean one woman to 3 men... does that mean the woman only gets one child? Or does she get one child with each man?

sociosexulaity.png

To understand the graph:
- lower sociosexuality means a more restricted mating strategy, or a higher propensity for monogamy
- higher sociosexuality means a more unrestricted strategy, or a higher propensity for promiscuity
- lower sex ratio means more competition for men
- higher sex ratio means less competition for men

So in Latvia there is more competition for men, and the contrast is Taiwan is the opposite. A lot of it has to do with the wars in Eastern Europe leading to less male available. Whereas in the East it is the opposite. A lot having to do with wanting male heirs and dumb policy like one child only.

I am guessing there is no data for China for whatever reason (never had the opportunity to gather or faulty gathering methods). Taiwan and Hong Kong might be the closes demographic representation. Although those are two are quite different from China and especially mainland China. These two are likely "less affected" by the one-child policy.

Anyways interesting stuff.

Maybe the Chinese men could hook up with all the single black women in America.

(oh no he didn't!)

Oh yes, Hype. *snap* I did.
