China Says U.S. 'Gravely Undermined' Relations With Dalai Lama Award

BEIJING — The United States has "gravely undermined" relations with China by giving the Dalai Lama an award, the Chinese government said Thursday.
On Wednesday, U.S. President George W. Bush presented Tibet's exiled spiritual leader with the U.S. Congress' highest civilian honor and urged Chinese leaders to welcome him to Beijing.
"The move of the United States is a blatant interference with China's internal affairs which has severely hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and gravely undermined the relations between China and the United States," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference.
He said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had summoned U.S. Ambassador Clark T. Randt to express "strong protest to the U.S. government."
China has warned that giving the award to a person it believes is trying to split the country would have serious consequences for relations, but has not said what it would do.
With the Dalai Lama by his side, Bush praised a man he called a "universal symbol of peace and tolerance, a shepherd of the faithful and a keeper of the flame for his people."

"Americans cannot look to the plight of the religiously oppressed and close our eyes or turn away," Bush said at the U.S. Capitol building, where he personally handed the Dalai Lama the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal.
The Dalai Lama is lauded in much of the world as a figure of moral authority, but China reviles as a Tibetan separatist and for the past week has vehemently protested the elaborate public ceremony.
The 72-year-old monk and 1989 Nobel Peace Prize laureate says he wants "real autonomy" for Tibet, not independence. He is immensely popular in the Himalayan region, which China has ruled with a heavy hand since its communist-led forces invaded in 1951. He has lived with followers in exile in India since fleeing Chinese soldiers in Tibet in 1959.
Bush said he did not think his attendance at the ceremony would damage relations with China.
"I support religious freedom; he supports religious freedom. ... I want to honor this man," Bush told reporters at the White House. "I have consistently told the Chinese that religious freedom is in their nation's interest."
On Tuesday, however, the Bush administration took pains to keep a private meeting with the president and the Dalai Lama from further infuriating China: no media access, not even a handout photo.
Bush wants to ease anger in China, a growing economic and military powerhouse that the United States needs to manage nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea. He also wants to be seen as a champion of religious freedom and human rights.

I don't know why Bush felt he had to do this. But I could care less about China being pissed!!

HEY CHINA!!!!!!!! WE JUST GOT ANOTHER TOY RECALLED THIS WEEK!! :cmad: :cmad: GLOW STICKS!! How about not sending lead -based paint products to our children!!!!!!!!!!! How about stopping the contaminated food while you're at it. How about mining your own "human rights issues!!

I guess I won't be ordering Chinese food this weekend. . . .

so...they going send more lead laced toys?

I know it's a joke, but that's an ill-conceived one and in poor taste.

The Chinese Americans who run the restaurant have nothing to do with the policies of the Chinese government. And you're not the only one who thinks this way unfortunately. When the news of tainted pet food broke, there were several political cartoons warning people about eating at Chinese restaurants.

Like I said, I know you're joking, but this is the kind of sentiment that a lot of Asian Americans have to deal with: perceiving Asian Americans as foreigners.

See ughh we ****ed something up AGAIN! and with china, they make almost everything that we buy, now there gonna like kill us with deadly toxins in our food/toys/clothing.

and you people don't agree that the US is ****ed up.

Wow, who would have thought you'd find ill-conceived jokes in poor taste on a comic book messaging board? What's next? Threads about a chocolate jesus?

Actually the fear makes sense. Tainted pet foods go into the cats and dogs which are cooked by the chinese and served to others fatally poisoning them over time until you dirty foreigners take control of the US from the mexicans using kung fu and your natural small frames to go undetected by the general populance. Ancient chinese secret my ass, I'm going to start punching random asian people in the face as my small part to stop your evil empire.

PS, I'm not joking. Boycotts aren't good enough, don't just boycott, punch an asian in the face today or tomorrow you might just die.
this post reminded me of Superman sponsored WWII era war bonds

tacky? yup

And this is the difference between humor and racist humor.

I went through all that trouble to really offend you and get you worked up and that's the best you've got? You disappoint. Everyone gets poked at and offended here along with their beliefs. Chill out a bit.

This is so funny. I had to film this science seminar for these weirdos yesterday. I stood behind a camera all day and listend to some yahoo as he tried to convince everyone that China intentionally trying to kill us all with their lead paint. He was convinced that this is some terrorist plot by China and that we need to do something about them.

 x1000

Well, looks like Bush did it again. This dude has pissed off more countries in his 2 terms than any other president has in history. I just hope we can hold off long enough where a world was doesn't start cuase of him.

i don't really get why china is pissed about this. is even acknowledging the dalai lama enough to piss them off?

They're like the good folks at marvel. They think if they pretend people don't exist and things didn't happen then they can do whatever they want.

I have to say, for once I kinda agree with a decision Bush made.

ditto.

it's kind of creepy that this is the second thing i've agreed with him on in the last two days. the other being about congress wasting time and money on trying to label the murder of armenians by turkey as a genocide, causing turkey to break ranks with us in iraq.

it must be opposites week.

Probably because we gave an award to the Dalai Lama..........China has enslaved Tibet for waaaaay too long. Their the bad guys in this case for getting ******** over this. They still feel it's right to have control of Tibet and it's people.

If you had slaves and someone gave them an award or something in relation to freedom and peace, I'm sure you wouldn't be too happy with that person who gave it to them.

i get that, but it's completely irrational, in my opinion.

Not going to derail the topic, but do some more research into what happened. It definitely was Genocide, and should be labeled as such, even if it does do a little damage to our "War on Terror".

Very true! I actually find it hilarious because in my head I see the Chinese crying and saying this while crying.

"They like our slaves better than us, WHAAAAAA!!!"

China needs to shut the hell up. :whatever: Since when does the Chinese government give a rat's @$$ about its people's feelings?
