Sex Offenders Accused of Murder Were Wearing Court-Ordered GPS Devices

Two convicted sex offenders accused of murdering at least four women in California were literally on the government's radar the whole time—police say the men, who checked in with probation officers on a regular basis, were both wearing court-ordered GPS ankle devices.

Franc Cano, 27, and Steven Dean Gordon, 45, were both arrested on Monday and charged with murdering four Orange County women: 21-year-old Jarrae Nykkole Estepp, 20-year-old Kianna Jackson, 34-year-old Josephine Monique Vargas, and 28-year-old Martha Anaya.

Police say starting last October, Cano and Gordon attacked, raped, then murdered the women—charges that could subject them to the death penalty if they are found guilty.

But according to authorities, Cano and Gordon were under surveillance the whole time—both men were checking in with parol officers once a month and wearing court-ordered GPS devices—Cano's from a state court and Gordon's from a federal judge.

Local officers began to suspect the deaths were all related after discovering Estepp's naked body laying on the conveyor belt of an Anaheim trash facility. Based in part on GPS and cell phone signals, police eventually tracked down Cano and Gordon, who were living out of their car.

"The GPS was in fact intact, attached to these suspects during the commissions of the crimes," Anaheim Police Chief Raul Quezada said during a press conference Monday.

Cano and Gordon, who both served time for sex crimes against a child under the age of 14, were required to wear the ankle bracelets as part of their probation. According to reports they met in 2012 when they cut off the GPS devices they were wearing at the time, took a Greyhound to Vegas and lived under aliases. They were rearrested but do not appear to have been imprisoned for the violation.

Portland to Dump 38 Million Gallons of Water Tainted by Teen's Urine

The city of Portland announced late Wednesday that it will flush nearly 38 million gallons of treated water because a teenager was busted peeing into a city reservoir.

The 19-year-old was caught on surveillance video peeing through an iron fence into the reservoir at about 1 am Wednesday. Along with two of his friends, the 19-year-old was cited for trespassing; he also received a ticket for public urination.

Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff said the water will be flushed because it was deliberately tainted, though he added the relatively-small amount of urine poses no health risk to the public.

"There is at least a perceived difference from my perspective," Shaff told the Associated Press. "I could be wrong on that, but the reality is our customers don't anticipate drinking water that's been contaminated by some yahoo who decided to pee into a reservoir."

Floy Jones, co-founder of the group Friends of the Reservoirs, disagrees with Shaff. "It's extremely wasteful," she said, noting that it's unclear if any of the urine even reached the reservoir.

For Shaff, though, the tainted water isn't worth the risk when you can just get more.

"It's easy to replace those 38 million gallons of water," Shaff said. "We're not in the arid Southwest; we're not in drought-stricken parts of Texas or Oklahoma."

Florida Teacher Has Sex With Student, Gets Pregnant, Gets Abortion

My first instinct is to envy this kid and day dream about how amazing that would have been were I in his position... But then reality sinks in and I realize this kid was abused, and chances are, so was this teacher when she was a child. Say what you will about May-December romances, but there's something seriously wrong with any 29 year old person who wants to spend time with a 17 year old. I mean, have any of you guys tried talking to a teenager these days? I rather put my hand in a garbage disposal.

Well in FL the age of consent is 16 but that only applies to people who are 25 and under. So either way you slice this it was sexual abuse. Damn skippy, or a pissed of ex-gf. I saw that happen to my friend first hand. He was dating this girl for a year when he was 17-18 and she was 16. He broke up with her and then she started trying to accuse him of rape and all kinds of crazy stuff. He got booked and had a long fight with the courts but luckily she had left some crazy voicemails on his phone about how she was going to do this to him and ruin his life. He beat it but the crappy thing in FL is even when you beat a charge your mugshot is all over the internet so when people google his name his mugshot with statutory rape charges come up. It's a freaking nightmare and a racket that they run here in FL and it's so hard to get them to take the pics down even if you aren't convicted of the crime

Professor Suspended Over "Threatening" Game of Thrones T-Shirt

A popular community college professor was suspended after posting a photo of his daughter wearing an oversized T-shirt bearing a tagline from this season of Game of Thrones—Daenerys Targaryen's "I will take what is mine with fire and blood."

Francis Schmidt, who teaches art and animation at Bergen Community College in New Jersey, shared the photo on Google+, where it was seen by several of his work contacts. One of them, a dean, decided the shirt was a veiled threat of some kind.

The faculty union is currently in conflict with the school administration over promotions and tenure, and recently registered a vote of no-confidence against the school's president. Schmidt himself had just filed a grievance after being denied a sabbatical. That may explain some of what happened next.

According to Inside Higher Ed, Schmidt got an email over the weekend from Jim Miller, Bergen's HR director, calling him into an immediate meeting with administrators about the alleged "threatening email."

At the meeting, Schmidt explained the shirt in the context of Game of Thrones and showed Miller that the "fire and blood" tagline has 4 million results on Google. The professor asked why his photo had caused such a reaction, and was told that "fire" could be a metaphor for "AK-47s."

Schmidt was placed on administrative leave without pay later that week, and told he would have to pass a psychiatric evaluation before he could return. He says he passed that same evaluation in 2007 after being diagnosed with depression.

In the face of public criticism and rationality, Bergen stuck to its imaginary guns in a statement today:

"The referenced incident refers to a private personnel matter at Bergen Community College. Since January 1, 2014, 34 incidents of school shootings have occurred in the United States. In following its safety and security procedures, the college investigates all situations where a member of its community – students, faculty, staff or local residents – expresses a safety or security concern."
Research has yet to establish a link between support for the Mother of Dragons and likelihood of shooting up a school.

Second Fetish Model Arrested in Animal Torture Porn Investigation

A 29-year-old adult model was arrested Wednesday and charged with 5 counts of cruelty to animals in connection with a series of fetish porn videos involving rabbits, fish, and chickens. She's the second performer charged in the case, the Miami Herald reports.

Stephanie Hird, 29, is accused of crushing live fish to death with her hands and feet. "Hird exposes her crotch area and talks to the fish about the killing while they are being crushed," charging documents allege.

Hird is also alleged to have repeatedly shot several rats, and then set fire to a pile of the mortally wounded animals.

Under the porn name "Megan Jones," Hird advertised her fetish services on Facebook.

"Are you in touch with your darkest fantasies? Have you created a life for yourself where you can experience them," the Herald says she wrote Facebook in February. "I have. I am ****ing crazy."

She also appeared on an episode of TLC's Strange Sex, where she starred in a special effects video for a client who had a fetish for being overpowered by giant women.

Hird's "#partnerincrime," Sara Zamora, 28, was arrested less than two weeks ago for being part of the same series of videos. Zamora allegedly karate-chopped rabbits in the neck, beat chickens to death with a stick, and cut a chicken's neck with hedge clippers while groping a man's genitals.

Police say both women did videos for Adam Redford, a South Florida fishing boat captain and fetish pornographer who specializes in animal torture. Redford was arrested last year in Lee County after PETA brought law enforcement's attention to his videos. He's listed as a co-defendant in Hird's case, but has not been arrested again.

Hird is now on house arrest after paying a $7,500 bond. She told a judge that her alleged crimes are outside the statute of limitations.

Brave Hunters Demand Right to Watch Dogs Kill Imprisoned Foxes

In Virginia, the land of Jefferson, respectable and upright citizens are fighting to preserve their right to hoard wild animals into a fenced enclosure and then enjoy the sight of dogs tearing them apart.

The practice in question is not just regular fox hunting, in which the foxes are at least able to flee through the woods as far as they can before being torn apart by dogs. The practice now up for consideration is the existence of "fox pens"—fenced enclosures of a hundred acres or more in which foxes are imprisoned so that brave hunters can have their dogs track them down for a fee. The mind reels at the honor and courage that these bold men of the woods must possess in order to drink Budweiser as their hound dogs chase wild animals who cannot run away.

Animal rights advocates are not fans of this practice, for some reason.

The New York Times reports that the state of Virginia has finally passed a law banning these fox pens, but—but!—the law allows for fox pens that already exist to continue operating for 40—40!—years. Still, the proud hunters of Virginia are unhappy:

"It's nothing that hasn't been going on since colonial times," Mr. Poarch said. "I just don't see why the people won't let us alone. Last time I heard, it was a free country."

Putin: I Think Obama Would Save Me If I Were Drowning

Well-known shirtless outdoorsman stock photography model Vladimir Putin had a little fun today, telling a Russian audience that he thinks Barack Obama would totally rescue him if he started drowning.

Putin, who also finally confirmed Russian forces had actively supported Crimean separatists, gave the interview after a much-disputed private phone call with Obama on Monday.

In an article about the world leaders' "Game of He Said/He Said," the New York Times noted that the White House described the call as primarily Obama lecturing Putin, while Putin described it as primarily a demand for American support in Ukraine.

But that's all business. When asked if he thought Obama would save him from drowning, Putin had a much more favorable opinion.

"Besides intergovernmental relationships, there are personal relationships," Putin said. "I am not saying we have some special relationships with the president of the U.S. but I think he is a decent and quite courageous person. I think he would do it."

"I can feel it in the air tonight," Obama presumably didn't say to anyone, probably not adding, "Oh lord."

The Prison Telephone Industry Can't Extort People as Much Now

The prison telephone industry is right up there with... well, the private prison industry, when it comes to the most repugnant manifestations of capitalism. The good news is, the industry is currently getting screwed by government regulation. Government regulation works!

For a long time, the handful of companies that controlled telephone calls from prisons were able to freely charge extortionate rates. They had, pardon me, a captive audience. The companies charged up to $20 for a 15-minute call. The prisoners and their families had to pay, or not talk. The phone companies kicked back part of the money to the prisons. It was an easy way to soak incarcerated people and their loved ones.

The ACLU, among others, pushed hard for regulations of these phone companies. And they finally got it last year, when the FCC agreed to rules that would cap the price of 15-minute calls at $3.75. Now, the Wall Street Journal reports, the largest prison phone company, GTL, is being put up for sale by the private equity firm that owns it, American Securities. The PE firm has already pulled an enormous amount of debt out of GTL to line its own pockets. But one can hope that the sale of the company now will not go well, given the greatly reduced opportunities for extortion of its target audience.

Whether or not you believe in notions of universal law or divine justice, I think we can all agree that the financiers involved in this industry must have earned some of the very worst karma in all of the United States of America. American Securities states in its list of corporate values: "We hope to make the world a better place by giving back to the communities in which we live and work." Enjoy the usurious profits that you charged to poor families whose loved ones are in prison, GTL and American Securities. You truly are among the blessed of the earth.

Christians Try to Convert Jews With Video of Jesus as Holocaust Victim

Happy Passover! Here's "This Jew Died for You," a bizarre video depicting Jesus on his way to a gas chamber in a Nazi death camp with some Polish Jews. It comes from Jews for Jesus, an evangelical group that aims to convert Hebrews in apparently the most off-putting way possible.

You have got to watch this thing. Major "uhm wha?" comes around 1:41.

The Christian group intended the video to be a timely thought-provoker, but it seems more like an opportunistic headscratcher:

"Our intent was not to illicit [sic] any kind of angry response but to actually engage people in a conversation because we think that the conversation about who Jesus is [is] important for Jews and Gentiles to discuss, and especially at this time of year, as we are in the Passover, Easter season, and leading into Holocaust Remembrance Day next week," Susan Perlman, associate executive director of Jews for Jesus, told The Christian Post Thursday.
The two-minute video is a straight rip-off of Spielbergian Schindler's List visual effects: a black-and-white video showing Jews in 1943 Poland being taken off trains at Auschwitz and divided by ferocious Nazis into two groups: workers, and gas-chamber fodder. Jesus alone appears in color, like the little girl symbolizing innocence in Schindler, helping some of the Jews as they stumble their way to fate.

As the Son of God approaches the Nazis' processing desk, a cross hoisted over his shoulder, the SS troops render their verdict—the gas chamber—then sneer that he's nur ein Jude: Just another Jew.

But then, if he was just another Jew, maybe he shouldn't be colored differently? That's indicative of the sort of tone-deafness that Jews for Jesus in its missionary zeal regularly exhibits toward the group it's targeting for conversion.

Jay Michelson, a blogger at the Jewish Daily Forward, called the video "most tasteless YouTube video ever," adding: "It doesn't take a Lenny Bruce to recognize this mode of sentimentality as quintessentially goyish."

All true. But hey, if it doesn't win them any converts, maybe it'll get some people to peruse some "Witness Wear" swag at the online Jews for Jesus Store, which is conveniently linked on the video's website. L'chaim!
