Comics Summer 2011: "Infested" and "Spider-Island"

Spider-Island Grows More Deadly
Marvel announces new tie-ins to the upcoming event.

May 13, 2011

Last time Marvel delivered a Spider-Man-centric event storyline, the result was The Gauntlet. 2011 holds what looks to be an equally major challenge for the wallcrawler - Spider-Island. In this story, Spidey finds himself far from the only resident of Manhattan to wield spider powers.

Unlike The Gauntlet, this event will have its own tie-ins outside the pages of Dan Slott's Amazing Spider-Man. Marvel revealed two of these books this week.

Spider-Island: Deadly Foes is a one-shot issue that focuses on The Jackal and Hobgoblin, two villains central to the conflict. Dan Slott, Fred Van Lente, and Christos Gage are collaborating on two tales that spotlight each villain. Giuseppe Camuncoli and Mick Oosterveer are providing pencils for the issue.

Meanwhile, Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu focuses on the martial artist heroes caught up in the battle for Manhattan. Antony Johnston is penning this three issue mini-series, which will see Spider-Man team up with Iron Fist and Shang-Chi (who also appeared in the FCBD prologue story). The Immortal Iron Fist character The Bride of Nine Spiders will also have a central role, though Marvel isn't revealing whether she acts as a hero or villain. Sebastian Fiumara is handling the art for this series.

Both of these Spider-Island tie-ins will debut in August. Stay tuned to IGN Comics for more on Spider-Island and the other major event comics making waves this summer.

I know I should be more excited about Anti-Venom vs. Flash-Venom...but...with AV having no weaknesses...and AV being able to kill the Venom symbiote by mere contact...

I guess I am excited, but just curious how this fight can go down.

I'd love to see a spider-powered Punisher show up and start blowing away villains.. and he has unique beef with the Jackal, who tricked him into going after Spidey way back when..

Amazing Spider-Girl 1 cover is homage to ASM 300?

I cant wait to read it I will have to wait till 2012 because i don't read the recent comic as they come out.

SPIDER-ISLAND Expands in September with AVENGERS One-Shot
June 8, 2011

Another Spider-Island tie-in is coming in September, this time a Spider-Island: Avengers #1 one-shot. The creative team is writer Christopher Yost and artist Mike McKone, who are currently paired on another event tie-in: the Fear Itself: Spider-Man three-issue miniseries.

The one-shot joins previously announced Spider-Island tie-ins Spider-Island: Cloak & Dagger, Spider-Island: The Amazing Spider-Girl, Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, a Spider-Island: Deadly Foes one-shot and the ongoing Venom series. The main Spider-Island story will be told in Amazing Spider-Man, starting with August's #667.

Seen on the cover are Hawkeye, Jessica Jones, Ms. Marvel, and — surely to attract the most attention — Frog Man. Marvel's press release follows:

They’ve endured a war, stopped an invasion, and prevented a siege...but can The Avengers do whatever a spider can? Marvel is pleased to announce Spider-Island: Avengers #1, a Spider-Island tie-in from the acclaimed team of Christopher Yost and Mike McKone (Avengers Academy)! Manhattan is over-run with wall-crawling New Yorkers and the Avengers must halt the mayhem! But as Earth’s Mightiest struggle against a spider-powered ultimatum on the United Nations, they’ll discover that with great power comes even greater adversity! Who can save the Avengers from an eight-legged Armageddon? Does all hope lie within Frog Man? (“Good lord, I hope not.”- Dan Slott) The answer will shock you this September, as the Avengers become Amazing in Spider-Island: Avengers #1!

Anti-Venom vs Carnage. Now it can happen.

as is usually the case these days, i have mixed feelings about all of this. i do miss nice, self-contained small stories, but i AM kinda provincial that way. i love the jackal, and i am excited about the prospect of a possible ben reilly return, a character i sorely miss. i actually liked the clone saga, both in the seventies and then later in the nineties. the 2nd clone saga just got to crazy and went outta contral (maximum clonage alpha and omega being the chief culprits). but for a time, when spidey's identity was in question, well, those were some of the most anxious--and exciting-- times i've experienced as a spider reader. not a big fan of humberto ramos on spider-man; reminds me too much of todd nauck.

They are saying that Ben Reilly is going to be coming back out of all this?

...nobody's said that.

Jackal is back, and people immediately think that because he's back then Ben will be, too.

I'd LOVE to see that happen, but there's really no evidence at all that it will happen yet.

Ok I was going to say. From the sound of bugman's post it sounded like there was some sort of rumor that Ben Reilly was going to be making a comeback. Because the only thing that I saw out of all the Spider-Island images were the covers with the various Marvel heroes dressed in different Spider-Man outfits and a couple were in the Ben Reilly costume and the Scarlet Spider costume.

With Jackal being back in the picture it does certainly lead to some speculation but I don't see Ben coming back. That would be too awesome...now wouldn't it, Mr. Slott? :cwink::oldrazz:

I'm half tempted to buy all the Spider-Island tie-ins, but I know I'll be dissappointed in half of them...

...sigh...

:o

I'll just be getting the main Amazing Spidey title and the Venom title. I'll also be getting that Deadly Foes one shot that Slott and Gage are doing. That sounds pretty cool. However, for the most part the rest just kind of seem "eh". If I were super rich I probably would get them all just to go along for the ride but I am very NOT rich so I have to get what looks like it'll be worth it.

How many issues of ASM is Spider-Island taking up?
