Superhero Casting You're Glad Didn't Happen

Or Clive Owen as Stark. I have to admit, I've always found Owen to be painfully overrated as an actor, especially on these boards. The only times he's ever really impressed me were in Croupier and Inside Man. Other than that, I usually find him kind of dull. I haven't seen The Knick though... maybe that would make me change my mind, I don't know.

He's pretty Stark-y in The Knick.

In an early 1900s sort of way. He was considered for Iron Man back in 2008.

I have to admit, I didn't (and don't) know much about Cap so when I heard the Renner rumor I thought of him in Hurt Locker and went "yeah, he fits, I guess."

Not saying it will change your view, but watch the scene in Closer where he argues with Julia Roberts, having found out she's cheated on him. The realism he delivers in wanting the truth but hiding his pain is brilliant, the delivery of the line 'Thank you for your honesty, now **** off and die !' is delivered with such rawness it is believable, I've always been an Owen fan and I think Closer is his best performance.

Freddie Prinze Jr. as Spider-Man.

Yes, this was actually considered by Sony.

Oh to answer the question in the thread:

Freddie Prinze Jr. as Spidey

Agreed on all counts, DACrowe. The Freddie's Prinze Jr. one would have been particularly catastrophic.
It's funny how he's getting all this negative reaction, when he played high school-college age student in plenty of his movies back in the day.

But I don't mind not seeing him play the role.

Tom Hiddleston as Thor.
Definitely.

I agree on SJ, Winter Soldier was the only time she gave it a real strong effort, and also the only time she had a good amount to work with... Avengers 1 she was good, but just kinda "having fun" more than being "there to work"

I still don't get the calls for "Blunt for Widow" though.... I've never seen her play sultry or seductive or deceptive or anything that I picture as Black Widow-esque
I do love me some Emily Blunt though, while I'm happy Brie Larson got Capt Marvel, Blunt would've been my preference.

Hopefully Marvel finally finds some role for her, one of these days
She could've been an awesome Jess Jones too

Emily is pure Black Widow here, even without saying a word, in a way that ScarJo has never come across:

WOW. I see why she was the first choice now. Would have been fantastic casting. ScarJo was very lucky to get the role.

Have you not seen 'My Summer of Love'?

The movie was Blunt's breakout role in the UK. Blunt played a teenage seductress.

I think Blunt's Black Widow would have had a Russian accent and be more serious. I like Scarjo but her BW is getting a bit too playful and quippy.

Emily Blunt as Widow would've been such perfect casting, which is why I didn't want her as Captain Marvel. It would've always reminded me of what could have been, and would be like having Patrick Stewart in the X-Men movies as Magneto. I'm glad she wasn't Carol.

I don't like Emily Blunt at all, and certainly not in a seductress role. She can be something in the Thor movies; I don't watch those.

Daayyyyummmmm. Okay, after watching this, I want to see Emily as a Bond villain.

So... he might have been good because he played characters that were around the same age as Peter Parker?

Speaking of Bond girls, that is what Black Widow should've been more like. She should've seemed like she could've been a Bond villainess who is actually good.

Back at the time of Goldeneye, either Famke Janssen or Izabella Scorupco could've been great as Black Widow. Especially Izabella:

She would've rocked any of Natasha's hairstyles.

This is more how I've always imagined Black Widow, not like ScarJo.

I din't say that.
I see him more as Flash Thompson kind more than Peter Parker though, or Harry Osborn.

Most of the Spider-Man Homecoming cast are ones I wish didn't happen and would easily be on this list.

Prinze as Flash I could definitely see. But for Harry, you need someone who can go dark and crazy and I can't see Freddie pulling that off. I actually feel like both Franco and Dehaan were great casting for that character... sadly, they were failed by writing and direction.

At least this guy was better treated than DeHaan.

Yeah, Franco's character was written okay in SM1 and especially SM2 (although the b**ch slap was weird). But he was a joke in SM3 (just like everything else in that movie).

  • Nicolas Cage as Superman
  • Bill Murray as Batman
  • Charlie Sheen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Furlong, Michael Biehn, FPJr, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Dylan O'Brien as Spider-Man
That's all that I got.

I quite like the idea of Cruise as Stark but then I realize it'd just be Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise. :oldrazz:

Jake Gyllenhaal as Spider-Man for Spider-Man 2.

Although I'm glad that he didn't replace Maguire when he hurt his back, I think Gyllenhaal would have made for a pretty good Peter/Spider-Man. If Raimi's Spider-Man 4 had happened and Tobey Maguire didn't want to continue in the role, replacing him with Jake Gyllenhaal moving forward for a couple of films probably would have been better than the two Marc Webb movies that we got.

It would be no different than Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner or Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard as Rhodey in the MCU.

They could have still kept it in the same universe. Just because a new actor plays a character doesn't mean they always reboot it. Another example is James Bond. There was still continuity after Sean Connery left the role. It's happened in television many times before too.

Oded Fehr might have been an interesting choice though

Was he considered? That would've been fantastic.

When was there a decision to cast Kyle Reese to play Peter Parker?

I think Biehn was up for Cameron's movie but I read it was for a villain, not Spidey.

I remember the Lautner rumors... *shudders*

@peterbenparker not by marvel but by some fans, yes. Intriguing idea isn't it?

Supposedly in Cameron's script, Peter webs Mary Jane to the side of a bridge a f***s her.

I don't think I've seen SM3 fully but from the stuff I did see or remember, Franco was a complete joke there.

Yeah. Of course, nothing beats the scene where Harry Osborn's BUTLER (who is apparently some sort of forensics expert in his spare time) reveals to him that he could tell by Norman's stab wounds that he killed himself. And then Harry does an about face and teams up with Peter in the final battle.

Terrible writing.
