World Superman Behind the Scenes ZOPTIC Camera

I got to talk to Zoran for an hour when we were going to use Front Screen Projection on a film I was working on. He was a very nice guy. Glad they went over the fringing. Another thing is, because teh screen is made up of glass beads, the projected images come back as greener to the camera then they are. So they had to add in some orange to counteract that into the original projected footage in the lab.

that's so bad ass you got to meet him and talked to him... I thought that entire interview was fascinating even though I was somewhat confused by it in terms of his explanations... it's amazing the kinds of innovations the SFX guys used to come up with back then instead of simply doing... ok let's CG it... as great as CG is, it can also be used extremely lazily like by the people who first pioneered its financing ala Lucas.

I didn't meet him. I called him on the phone expecting to get someone else answering and I got him. he was in the middle of a set up for the film he was shooting at the time, Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger. I was jsut trying to ask a question regarding the color timing or more pink/orange into the plate and what in their tests did they find to work, and he all of a sudden just started talking more and more. Then he had me put Superman on and started telling me what problems they ran into on every shot, and what worked, which really blew me away. Here he was working on a major studio film, and he might have had the star there, and he took a lot of time on the phone to help a guy who was calling him about some advice for a low budget film he was working on. He was really great. And you can see how the difference of film stocks and all made a difference in that films Zoptic shots. IN fact, a lot of them you cant even tell they are zoptic, much less effects shots. And so you know, Stallone is afraid of heights, and most of the climbing shots are either bodydouble, bluescreen or zoptic. Many zoptic.
