World Superman: Doomsday DVD Review

To be honest, when I heard about it I wasn't expecting much, but personally I thought it was bloody great!

Marsters was great as usual. Overall, the only problem I had with the movie was Supermans face. It just looked like they tried to make his face look as chizzeled as possible. Other than that, I loved it.
It also sucked that it was only 75 minutes. For God sake, WB, at least bump it up to 90.

I liked it. But I wouldn't have picked Heche for Lois, her voice is pretty annoying but I did get used to it. It took me a while to get used to the character designs but it was all alright, except for Supermans over lined face. I liked the plot (and felt emotion when supes died) but the movie would have been far better if it were 25 minutes longer.

Rating: 7.5/10 It was better than that waste of time movie from 06.

SR was good but, I would've muched preferred this to be the Superman movie of the new generation.

Though the budget would be ridiculous.

Then again, so was SRs so I guess this could've been possible in live-action.

It's a good movie but clearly rushed.

As far as Superman movies go, it's probably the fourth or fifth best.

I saw this movie about a week ago. I really didn't like it. The quality was very low, the voices seemed mismatched for the characters and the story was poor. It seemed like more of an excuse for ADHD-fueled explosions than an actual Superman story.

I just bought this and watched it for the first time, and I gotta say, I was quite disappointed. I was expecting something definitive, on par with Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Instead we got basically a three part episode of Superman TAS with no really noteworthy changes, and and a choppy disjointed story in which both Superman's "death" and "rebirth" are rushed and feel insignificant. I was also amazed the other title character, Doomsday, is featured so little in the film. This is the monster that killed Superman, and somehow he's just an afterthought. The clone Superman was also boring as hell. Please, if you're going to give us an evil Superman, give us the cyborg, or even give us Bizarro if you have to, but don't just give a us a superman clone.

I just bought it today and I wasn't expecting much after reading some criticism on net. But guys you know what? I simply loved it.

Believe me it's the best Superhero animated movie i saw till today. Better than all the past DC and Marvel animation. It's mature, bit violent but the screenplay is tight and the story is good.

The action of this movie is mind blowing. The brutal combat is just thrilling. I want to see this kind of movie as a live action movie. DC and Warner bros are you listening? The duration is bit short but it still is awesome man.
A solid 9/10 :yay:

I LOVE it. It was short but had a little bit of everything: good characterization, mature story, emotion, heart, and great action. Wish the music was better, and didn't quite like the treatment to Jimmy.

8/10

The most annoying thing about "Superman: Doomsday" for me is I can't get it. I get DVDs every week but they seem not to want Australians to give them money for the film. I guess it's their anti-piracy policy. Basically never release things here so they don't see a dime (even though we don't call them that here). Yep smart policy. So my review is: the WB's DVD policy sucks. I can't give you money for things if you don't make them available. By the way I still haven't seen it. I would if I could get it here. Same with "B:TAS" (Volumes 2-4), "S:TAS" (all 3 volumes), "Batman Beyond", "Justice League" and "JLU" box sets. Probably even "The Batman" if they released box sets and not lame one disc crap. Sorry for the rant but I would like to review it but the only way I could do that is to not buy it. Call me crazy but I'd like to get it even for the extras ('cos if I don't like the film they might be better especially as I presume they delve into history of the comic that deals with the topic). I posted it here because it's been months and nothing doing. Actually for "B:TAS" Vol 2 and "S:TAS" Vol 1 it's been over three years - still nothing. As they were released according to Amazon January 25, 2005. So no release equals no money. I don't have a multi-region player. So will I ever get to review it? Seems doubtful. Ironically they may release "Justice League - The New Frontier" here according to a DVD site. If they want a better anti-piracy policy it would be to release stuff the same week worldwide not stateside. But the whole world. If that's too hard then that month and at worst within 2 months. But really the same day or week is best - think Harry Potter - both film and books. Lastly sorry for the rant but it urks me that I can't get them. And it years of irritation not just months.

I think, as almost everyone who has commented on the film, that it's simply too short to tell the epic tale. The Death and Return of Superman is a huge, huge story, spread across atleast thirty issues of different comics.

One of the problems is that the actual battle with Doomsday and Superman's death was the climax of the first part of the whole saga, whereas in this film it's just the first fifteen minutes. They say start with an explosion and build to a climax, but there are few climaxes bigger than Superman versus Doomsday.

The comics managed it with the four Super imposters and the de-powered Supes fighting against the Cyborg, Mongul and his hordes who had destroyed an entire city. Then you had the Eradicator sacrificing himself to restore Superman's powers. Great, worthy finale to the story.

Superman fighting a clone of himself.....no way near as effective.

Having said that, I am watching the film a few months later and really enjoying it...I think it actually works very well, but not as an adaption of the comic storyline, but a different take.

I just want to update and say I may get to see it. Because according to an internet retailer Australia will get it. The same day as "Batman: Gotham Knight". I'm happy. Though I hope they'll release the animated box sets one day as well.

It's definetly worth seeing atleast once, if only to see Superman's battle with Doomsday.

lol...always mobile, but I'd thought I'd let everyone who can still watch it know that Doomsday is coming on CN in about thirty minutes if you live on the West Coast.

I just caught this today and I liked it. I was surprised at how 'adult" it was though. I saw it on Cartoon Network and they had an advisory that warned of violence and sexual content. Sexual content? Wow. But,I do like these more adult versions of these animated film(Batman Beyond:Return of the Joker was my fav). This version of Lex Luthor was, without a doubt, the biggest bastard I've seen and I did like the way Lois Lane looked. It was nice to see the characters more grown up then the were in the animated series.

It improves with every viewing, actually. You begin to see it as a story on it's own merits and not an attempted direct translation of the Death of Superman.
Heck...I'm a fan.

^^Agreed.

Yeah, even though I own it, I saw it last Saturday on CN as well, just because, haha. I really like it overall, but Superman´s cheek lines bother me a lot, ugh!

This held my attention for about five minutes. Changed the channel and never looked back.

Just get a multi-region dvd player and order them from the U.S.. It's not that difficult. :oldrazz:

I watched it with a group of people and we talked about how bad his face looked for almost the whole time. What were they thinking? Overall, it wasn't very good, though.

I LOVED it! Although I liked Superman Returns I thought this is what Returns should have been. It had alot of action and thats what I want in my Superman movies.

I liked this. Music was superb, story was pretty good. Didn't like the character art, as they didn't look at all like real people! (Supes far too chiselled and exaggerated). Above all, blown away by the theme music, which was fantastic and the sort of thing i wanted in SR.
