Superman effects

Yeah Chronicle was awesome and the finale of the film makes most superhero films final battles pale in comparison.
with that style of camera movement every superhero would have a budget under 50 millions.

lets get realistic here guys.........

I loved Chronicle and i cant wait to see how the flying looks in Superman. It has actually made me a little nervous as i feel Chronicle raised the bar.

It actually looks like that Honda ad from years back that i thought perfected flying.

Its dissapointing that the last 3 Marvel films are weaker films than Chronicle. imo

Thank you for making me Google that ad! I haven't seen Chronicle yet but I'm more eager to see it now. It's funny how lower budget effects could be more convincing, although the flying didn't seem that fast. I'm guessing faster flying is harder to pull off. I still have high hopes with weta.

Here's a link for anyone else that wants to see it:

dark_b has a point.
Although i haven't seen Chronicle i will say this. From the look of things , the cast as great chemistry and so makes their performance very believable.
Often big blockbuster go all out in terms of visuals but those scenes often lack emotional heart .

I realized the vapor coming off of Superman in the trailer is too big. It should also be a different shape that matches his body's aerodynamics. Looks like they used the vapor cone of a jet.

Yeah Chronicle was great especially with the budget that FOX had for the movie. :woot:

ya, i was actually surprised by how unrealistic that shot looked to me, and this is probably why. Surprising mistake for the people at WETA to not obey the laws of physics, haha. Hopefully somebody gets them the memo.

It isn't about looking realistic. It is about looking awesome.

It's realistic because as people said it, Superman is changing the particles and all...He's a hot body in a cold atmosphere hence the trail. I`m no science buff and I think it looks amazing and that is enough for me.

The fact its not exact as it should be doesn't bother me in the slightest I don't get why ppl get so annoyed by little facts like this end of the day its clear a mans flying who cares if his vapor trail isn't right.

Dont care about the accuracy either as long as they added it. It still looks more real than if they didnt add it and furthermore it emphasizes the speed a lot more and makes it come off very powerful.
And I'm sure WETA studied actual footage and is aware of the possible inaccuracies, but sometimes you just gotta tweak the reality to give it that extra.

Maybe it has something to do with him having flown through a cloud as well, sort of like he's dragging some of it along with him.

This in a nutshell. I've just spend about a minute reading some of the posts on here, scratching my head at how anal people can be.

End of the day, the ONE VFX shot we've all seen (the flying shot in the teaser) looks 100X better than anything in Superman returns.. Who actually gives a crap if the physics aren't exactly right? Feck me, are people planning on taking a white board to the cinema with them?

 great post

How much would you crack up if you went to the cinema and there were a dozen guys with whiteboards :p

Honestly. the way some people act I wouldn't put it past them.

sounds like a scene that would appear in The Big Bang Theory.

not that i watch that show.

....

joking aside, any special effect involving a highly fictional character is going to be completely theoretical, so we have to leave our minds open to different interpretations of physics. we don't know how superman's physiology has an effect on anything in the real world. does he have his super aura that extends to objects he touches so that the laws of earth physics go out the door?

when you try to apply real world science to science fiction, of course you're going to get discrepancies. but, at the end of the day, there's just no way to prove anything at all, so arguing seems moot. to me, at least.

It isn't about looking realistic. It is about looking awesome.

Not mutually exclusive. Looking realistic can also look awesome. The reason why people are loving the CGI so far is because it looks more realistic than before. So yes, it is about looking realistic. That's basically the whole "Nolan" influence.

Like someone mentioned earlier, this isn't the final CGI so maybe they will change it. And if they do, would you guys complain then that it should be less realistic? Doubt it.

I'm not talking about laser eyes though. Someone like a vapor trail can be applied to science because it doesn't have to do with Superman's powers. It's just speed, atmosphere, and the object's shape.

Good grief... I honestly feel sorry for people who get this analytical. These people can't even enjoy awesome when it's right in front of them. It's not like we get Superman movies like this every day. :csad: It's so sad... Oh WELL! LOL! Glad it's not me! SUCKS to be you :woot::woot:

agreed, except that we have no idea how an alien object like Superman would react to our atmosphere either. sure, we can make assumptions and theorize all day, but there's no way to be 100% sure. we know how earth-made objects react, but what about alien-made objects?

it's all hypothetical, which is why we have to suspend our disbelief. granted, it can't be too ridiculous either. hopefully, there will be just enough.

eh, i like arguing the scientific merits because i find it amusing and engaging (so long as it doesn't get too out of hand). i could say it sucks to be you because you can blindly accept anything thrown at you, but i won't. on the one hand, i'm in the same boat; i'm just happy there's gonna be another Superman movie coming out soon.

All we need is Henry, in costume, strapped to the end of a ten foot pole attached to a fighter jet, flying at Mach 1 and take photographs.

Nothing complicated at all really.

Anyone looking for realism in a Superman movie really chose the wrong movie to be interested in.
