Hey folks,

Like most people, I've always known who Superman was but was never really a huge fan. Picked up S.R. the other day, great movie. Anyway, my question goes out to anyone who is knowledgeable about Superman lore...

:super: Why doesn't anybody recognize him as Superman when he's geeked out as Clark? If I see John Doe, then I see John Doe later with glasses on and his hair parted...I'm still going to know that I'm looking at John Doe. Is it simply the "suspension of disbelief" thing, or does he have some sort of hypnotic power over people when he's Supes/Clark? :super:

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS!

thanks :woot:

I think this is a multiple part answer.

Comics and Movies.

In the movies I think we are supposed to believe that Clark slumps. Is as unassuming as possible so he's really not noticed by many and he changes his voice to try and cover up the vocal similarities.

In the Comics, back in the seventies, there was a story that stated he had a sort of auto hypnotism thing going on. To everyone else, Clark seemed older with a little gray at the temples, shorter and a bit heavier.

Currently in the comics, he may slouch, and try to appear 'mild-mannered' but as SUperman he tries to vibrate slightly so that there aren't any really good photos of him or when people see him his features appear unclear.

Does that answer the question?

I actually thought in SR they did a very good job of making Clark and Superman seem like two very different people.

I don't think there is one definative answer ,I think it's more suspension of disbelief than anything .Do you have the 2 disc DVD there is an exchange between Bryan Singer ,Brandon Routh and someone off camera asking these very questions on the features disc. It is one of the best parts of a great documentry watch it if you can . Brandon thinks it's all explaned to Kal-El in the "father" crystal.
