Season 10 of Supernatural featured the Winchesters dealing with their own problems. Dean was a demon and then had to wrestle with the effects of the Mark of Cain, and Sam went down a dark path of his own to try to save his brother. Season 11 is changing the tone. Executive producer Jeremy Carver, writer Andrew Dabb, and cast members Jared Padalecki (Sam), Jensen Ackles (Dean), Misha Collins (Castiel), and Mark Sheppard (Crowley) made their annual appearance in Comic-Con's Hall H and discussed the road ahead with moderators Rob Benedict (Chuck Shurley) and Richard Speight, Jr. (the Trickster).
The upcoming season will bring the brothers back together to fight against the Darkness. Carver said, "
Last year -- we're really proud of last season. We had a lot of intensely personal character stories and this year we're going back to more of an epic feel with a Big Bad and a real sort of quest for the brothers to unite on." He continued, "It's like a pre-biblical story... I feel like the brothers are going to be really, really united in their need to take this thing down."
When asked if he thought the Winchesters would be able to defeat the Darkness, Padalecki said, "I think we'll beat it because we're not the LOSEchesters." Both he and Ackles are looking forward to the brothers being a dynamic duo on the same side again. Ackles said that we're left with the clean up of getting rid of the Mark of Cain and said,
"Now it's figuring out how to deal with decisions we've made... What I like about where we're going is -- the brothers are united [in a way] similar to Season 1 when we were looking for dad. It's not one of us inflicted with some sort of craziness."
The Darkness affects more than just Sam and Dean's world -- it ripples out to reach the world at large. Demons and angels will be part of the fight. Collins said, "So far, from what I have seen of the season, my impression is that we are united against a common enemy." All Sheppard would say about Crowley is that he's dead. He deadpanned. He did keep getting cracked up by Benedict talking to him with a stuffed hamster. That actually made the whole panel dissolved into tears of laughter.
Before the panel wrapped and before they showed the traditional gag reel, an audience member asked Carver about why the decision was made to kill Felicia Day's character Charlie. Several of the panelists hid under the table. Carver said, "That's an excellent question. It's tough just because any time you have a favorite character on a show -- people die on the show and unfortunately there's just so many ways to answer that -- it's tough for me to answer." He explained that it's a show where everyone seem to die at one point or another and generally made it sound like killing Charlie was not an easy decision.
Season 11 of Supernatural premiers on October 7th on The CW.
