Suprising Box Office Numbers

Oh and OF COURSE was RDJ the main reason why IM made that amount of money.
He always was known for being a very charismatic actor and in the years before IM he gave some of his best performances in movies like Good Night And Good Luck, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Zodiac.
People just WAITED to see him in a big blockbuster...
I agree with amazingfantasy15. RDJ was absolutely fantastic as Tony Stark, but he wasn't the main reason so many people flocked to see Iron Man its opening weekend. This was:

Definitely Avatar. Man, I remember SonofKyrypton. He was right. Kind of annoying, but very much right. He was right about Inception as well. Opening weekend was higher than I thought, a good amount. But it just kept going and holy ****.

And Star Trek. I was excited for it, but within that week before release I was immensely worried about it. But thankfully, the opening weekend was great. Much higher than I thought. I mean Star Trek did this well? I thought the stigma would carry through, but thankfully, the audience saw past it. Abrams and co ****ing pulled it off.

I did not expect Inception to be the hit that it was. I figured it would do some numbers, given TDK's success and DiCaprio, but it was so high-concept and dense that I doubted audience's willingness to go along with it. I couldn't be happier that I was wrong.

I'd've never guessed that a movie like Taken, which was released in Europe over a year earlier, would become a giant hit in America. I'm all for it cause Liam Neeson's the man

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . Made money and was put on the mainstream map. i remember going to see it because there was nothing else worth seeing.

I don't understand how people can complain about Avatar (Not the best movie but far from horrible) and NOT mention Alice in Wonderland. The piece of tripe made over 1 billion worldwide and beat TDK.

I still dont understand how it made so much money. I guess it was riding off Avatar's success with 3D still being a novelty and all. I kind of wish Tron:Legacy switched places with it (I was expecting that to make a lot of money but it just did okay)

That one you CAN credit to a single star: Johnny Depp. I'll admit, I was excited for that movie too, but it was really underwhelming.

A movie like My Big Fat Greek Weding was a huge surprise. And comedies in general are often hard to predict.

Star Trek overseas numbers was suprisinly bad even if the franchise is not big outside the US

There have been many suprises in the last few years. But Iron Man's success is the one that sticks out most to me. Before it came out, I was hoping for at best what would now be X-Men Origins: Wolverine numbers, which would have been phenominal for a B-lister superhero only comics fans knew about. It nearly doubling that $ was just not expected in the least by me and smashed an old rule(that conventional wisdom had held onto for such a long time) to pieces: That only the big 3 and maybe X-Men could really break out and that lesser heroes had not much chance.

Avatar. How did such a mediocre movie make so much money? Oh right, the 3D gimmick was "new" a few years ago.

worldwide 3d tickets didnt even make up a majority of those sold and even if you discount the extra 3d surcharge it still made 2 billion dollars. So yeah.

I think Inception's marketing while worrying, was ultimately well-played. It had some solid word of mouth, but also, despite the high concept, ultimately I dont think the movie is really as dense as we sometimes like to pretend.

Iron Man's opening weekend somewhat blew my mind.

Tron got exactly what it deserved in my opinion.

so why didnt Tourist make more money?

i didnt think that Inception would do so much money. but before the movie i didnt know that everything in the movie would be explained on a level for 5 year old kids. this is not a complaint. i love the movie. Nolan made a smart decision to explain the concept of the movie even for idiots. because if he wouldnt it would be a bomb.

Alice in Wonderland annoys me so much. Though I recognized the story has been done to death, I would have rather have watched a new live action adaptation of the book rather than a really half assed new story that tries to cram in all the elements from the old story.

Also while for the most part I thought the designs were interesting, I hate the way th Mad Hatter looks, and I did not find Johnny Depp interesting in the part.

Holy ****. Totally forgot about SoK. Dude was pretty much dead on with his predictions.

The Tourist was a hit,it made most of its money overseas.not every Jonny Depp movie will make over 300 mil worldwide

also if memory serves, Alice in Wonderland had pretty much no competition at least for a few weeks. It came out in early march didnt it?

Never underestimate the Mallrat crowd.

I wasn't surpised about Avatar. It was like a James Cameron created theme park ride, more than a movie. It was always going to make big money.

I'll go along with others that mentioned Iron Man. Totally didn't see that coming. Was glad it did though.

And on that note, Sherlock Holmes too.

That too. Ever since 300, the first weekend of March has become like a tentpole for potential blockbusters.

^Which is why I'm glad that Neil Blompkamp secured it for Elysium, despite the fact that I'm sad we wont see it until 2013!

I haven't seen it yet, but it surprised me that this was the 6th highest grossing film of all time. I'll give it a watch at some point.
