Gasp,.. I double posted!!!
I don't double post,...

I can readily suspend disbelief in things like origins even if they don't make sense on the surface. You can and should always assume that there is something going on that isn't being told. Where I have trouble is when they start retconning and rewriting a characters history. If a writer signs on to write a character then he also accepts that characters powers, origin and history even if he doesn't like it or thinks he could do better. It's called professionalism. When they start changing a character I simply cannot accept the changes in most cases. The other problem is when fights violate physicals laws too badly. Amplitude is fine, that's what we buy comics for, but when raw strength starts doing things that strength cannot do that's another thing. Punching through dimensions is barely acceptable when a character is supercharged with magic and is thus not violating obvious natural laws but when a character is supposedly a science based character and does something similar that's crossing the line. We all buy the comics to see the fights but when the fights favor excessive drama and amplitude and throw out all respect for internal consistancy then I have to reject it. If a character fights another character whether villan or another hero then he should have to defeat that characters abilities as they have been established not merely ignore them so as to give the lead character a victory. If writer is not creative enough to solve all the problems associated with the characters then he should try writing in an easier genre.

Whew! Got that rant out of my system.

It's not so much a question of 'willingness to suspend disbelief' - (clearly we're all happy to do that, how else would we enjoy reading comics about a guy who can climb walls) - as it is an issue of 'how much are we willing to overlook'?

I.e. how much are we willing to ignore or overlook when a fictional universe goes against it's own rules?

In my case.... it depends on a variety of factors. How much am I willing to overlook? Quite a bit, even though I do sometimes have to grit my teeth and remind myself that 'it's just a comic... it's just a comic...'

its the same thing. people suspend their disbelief until something RRREALLY unbelievable happen. then we start talking about realism... go figure

i can believe a retcon if its something that was originally left open/ misunderstood/ vague - like the original premise of how (after the first spider-man clone saga) which was the clone was never completely explored and so having pete the clone (tho upsetting) was nevertheless believable.

On the other hand telling people gwen went to europe to have a baby when she disappeared for a little while just didnt fit (from what i understand) and was trying to not only retcon something but make us believe that it was possible originally. this is not only unbelievable but plays fans for fools.

True, it also cheapens the tragedy of the original storyline which was excellent and is or certainly should be one of the all time classics!

no matter of retconning can change the original stroy in the eyes of fans :)

I have to object...while changing an origin is not the thing to do....for it to work it has to be well thought out. While Spidey's new magic origin leaves much to be desired...Flash's speed force has brought much to the character

That is a matter of opinion :(

you would be the first person I ever heard complain about it

Basically I'm willing to believe the any established abilities. Character origins no matter how ridiculous are fine by me. Power upgrades are usually fine by me. I may not like them but i'm willing to believe them. When they're established and explained at least. If power upgrades come out of nowhere without warning or explanation thats where you lose me.

Wolverine has had a bunch of things that maybe could have upgraded his powers but none of them were stated to have.
Surviving that nitro thing completely falls under the category of what i wont believe.

The writers established their own rules within their universe that i am willing to follow. So long as they dont contradict what they've already established then i'm usually okay with it.

^good point. i think as long as a comic doesnt **** on its own standards or contradict themselves then a comic book can make most things believable.

Hence what I said about standards and editors needing to do their jobs. They have to be there for more than just putting their names in books and checking for typos. The editor has to look at things and say "No, we have no precedent for this happening. Either explain how it's happening or change it."

Instead, they just let their writers do whatever they want, particularly the "celebrity" writers who make big sales regardless of what they churn out.

With Marvel hiring their books out to any third-or-fourth rate Hollywood or television writer (*cough*Hudlin*cough*), you can't expect these wannabe hotshots to stay within the realms of what's been established. So the editor's got to be there to say "Hold up now. That's not how this works."

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like many editors know much about the comics either. They've probably been spoiled by editing guys like Waid and Busiek, who know more about comic continuity than even the most rabid fanboys.

If that's the case, it's time for them to start perusing the library of "Essential" volumes and know their **** already.

With entire runs of a title coming out on dvd it should be easier to catch up on a title when a writer starts up. I just hope they keep putting out new collections

Are there any examples of planets with species weaker than humans? Thats my main gripe with sci-fi. Why are we usually the crappest species??? I know with superpowered mutants etc, the marvel universe earth has a certain reputation, but the only aliens i know of from marvel are kree, shiar and skrull and they (quite frankly) make earth look like crap.

In Invincible, there were those insectoid aliens who only lived for six or so months.

ok here is a perfect example of Suspension of Disbelief.....
The opening sequence to Golden Eye. A plane goes off a cliff. James Bond on a motorcycle follows. He skydives after the plane...catches up and then flies it away. I believe it because it's Bond and he can pretty much do whatever based on the previous movies.

Now the end scene to Mission Impossible(for me) ruined a very good film. In the last scene Ethan Hunt jumps off a helicopter that is tied to a bullet train that is moving at it's cruising speed and makes it. Impossible

^didnt it explode, flinging him forward?

if you were on a helicopter tied to a bullet train going well over 200 mph and said helicopter exploded would the explosion throw you onto the bullet train or would you fall back due to the speed of the train
