Horror Suspiria (2018) Dakota Johnson & Tilda Swinton

I was exposed to Argento's stuff only recently (watched Suspiria and Phenomena due to BD remasters). Really enjoyed it, the films felt unique.

I hope this one delivers. I'm starving for quality horror, that's more than spooks.

From an interview with an italian newspaper (La Repubblicca)I ain't going to link due to possible foul language and all that.

Q. And how did the movie turn out?

A. I showed it to Quentin Tarantino. We've been friends since our jury duty at Venice Film Festival. I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me. He was enthusiastic about it, in the end he was crying and hugged me. Because it's a horror movie but also a mélo. My goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take off your eyes because you're captivated by the characters. Amazon is very happy, then we'll see."

Thanks! I'm quite happy to hear that Tarantino likes the new film! Apparently Jessica Harper saw the full film recently too and has said some great things about it on her official Facebook page too.

I'm really curious to see how Thom Yorke's soundtrack ends up meshing with the visual style of Guadagnino's film, since Yorke's mentioned looking to Vangelis' Blade Runner score for influence and some of his recent score compositions for smaller short film projects match that angle, while Guadagnino's film apparently looks like something shot in the 70's by Fassbinder, Bertolucci or Bergman. That's going to make for one interesting combination of images and music.

Hmm I wonder when we will get a teaser trailer, or even a release date announcement. It's possible we will get both at the same time. I might start getting worried if we don't have even a release date by the beginning of july...I mean the fall really isn't that far away when you think about it. Most movies i've seen in recent memory have had a release date set quite a few months in advance. We had a release date on BR2049 over a year before it released. Maybe it's cause this is from amazon distrubution and not as well known of production companies.

As much as I love those two, Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) is probably my fav Argento flick.

It's another with beautiful visuals and a great Goblin soundtrack.

Deep Red is on my watch list. It was recommended to me.

I remember being scared ****less when I was playing Clock Tower on SNES as a kid, didn't know it was inspired so much by Phenomena.

Deep Red is great. I'm also quite fond of Argento's debut film, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Both are top notch giallo films. While I wouldn't say that either film is quite on par with Suspiria in terms of how much extreme emphasis Argento put on the cinematography and colors, I do think both are probably a bit stronger than Suspiria in terms of plot.

In all honesty, plot is the big area where I think Guadagnino can really do a one-up on the original Suspiria. I'm excited to see how his take looks and how Thom Yorke does with his score, but it sounds like they're (wisely) opting not to compete with the original in that department and are instead approaching the film in their own unique way. Not necessarily better or worse, just different.

But the story? That's an area that I definitely think can be improved upon in a bunch of different ways.

I really hope we get a trailer for this soon.

Hype. Maybe a trailer in the next couple of weeks?

The instragram/fb account for this movie is becoming a tad more active. They posted a video of Luca showing us what is presumably a weapon or tool, or wand.

This is really interesting. I wasn't aware that the remake had got as far as shooting let alone a fairly close release date. I really like the original but see no reason why it couldn't have a cracking remake in the right hands. Is this going theatrical?

I just hope when it hits theaters that they re-release the original on blu ray.

Severin just put out a 4k this past fall.

Not in my region, apparently. The only things I can find online are DVD's for $50 on amazon and as much as I love the original, I'm not paying that. Especially when a decent version is already on daily motion.

A heartfelt (and haunting) message from Luca.

I can't wait to see this film. It's clearly going to be extremely different from the original Argento film, but I think that'll end up working out to its advantages. Sounds like Luca Guadagnino is doing with Suspiria what Carpenter and Cronenberg did with their remakes of The Thing and The Fly back in the 80's by making the film its own thing.

Absolutely. I think with a film like this that's the only way to tackle it.

These posters are kind of awful. No one would know what this is advertising.
