I wonder is there room for this genre anymore in modern cinema? I know the Pirate movies have done pretty well and have made a lot of money but short of those what else is there and what actors could you see playing those parts. Superheroes rule the box office these days which is awesome as well but I remember growing up and loving movies like Robin Hood, 3 Musketeers, Zorro, etc. While I liked Russel Crowe as Robin Hood I miss the old school swashbuckler movies. I want to see some more of these movies but not grounded in reality or set in the far flung future. Good old fashioned period movies that are fun and adventurous. A Robin Hood movie with an Errol Flynn type lead or even an original character set in that genre. I could see a few different actors fitting these types of roles and would love to see Tom Hardy or Fassbender tackle a fun movie as this

I hope so. They should make a new Zorro movie. The Mask of Zorro is one of my favorite movies.

I think there is definitely room for it. I think audiences could potentially eat it up, if it’s fun and memorable.

However, studios would look at the idea and say “well, how can we spend $200 million on this and have it set up a connected universe?” instead of just letting a writer/director make a fun movie.

Heck yes.

The Mask of Zorro is one of my favorite movies too (maybe it's the Finnish blood in my veins?). I don't know how many times I've seen it. Another great movie is The Scarlet Pimpernel (80s version) with the amazing Anthony Andrews (Ivanhoe).

I'd love to see a fun Robin Hood movie that didn't feel the need to be dark and gritty and realistic. The Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie is one of my faves.

Count another who would love to see another Zorro movie.
The actual origin story by Allende has yet to be done.
I think Sony had optioned it. That story really embraces the swashbuckler adventure, as young De La Vega and company travel by ship to and from Spain to California, they encounter, fight and befriend pirates.

Anothet I would love to see is Emilio Salgari's Black Corsair.

This, so much this. I'm so tired of "gritty" or "realistic" takes on these classic heroes. Ridley Scott's Robin Hood was a grim pile of crap. We've had TWO "grim" King Arthur movies already this millennium, one with magic elements and one without, and they both sucked. Why does Hollywood seem to think that the only way to make these types of movies is by sucking all of the fun out of characters people have grown up with?

Well, actually... I suppose that's not entirely true. I mean, we did have a Three Musketeers movie a little while ago that didn't shy away from the fun elements... but they doubled down on stupidity and the movie was also a disaster. But that's what you get when you hire the Resident Evil guy to adapt Alexandre Dumas.

I love the genre and by all means it’s definitely lacking these days. I really want some original characters to be adapted. Some devil may care laugh in the face of danger loveable rogues. Short of that though I want to see some classics given new life, make them fun again. Stop trying to tell a semi historically correct that’s dark or gritty. Let’s see a Robin Hood that’s fun and adventurous, he enjoys being the outlaw and sticking it the sheriff. I really want to see Luke Evans play a fun Robin Hood. I’d like to see Sinbad get some love again, 3 musketeers, and The Mask of Zorro was an amazing film, I want that magic to be captured again

Yeah, the last movie I can recall having the kind of fun, swashbuckling spirit that this genre requires was The Count of Monte Cristo.

Swashbuckling genre went to tv. It's as simple as that. There's a perfectly good Musketeers series.

Recent King Arthur was far from grim. Reminded me most of a big budget fantasy show like Hercules or more aptly Legend of the Seeker.
It was a "heavy metal epic" at times in every sense of those terms.

The Count of Monte Cristo was a great movie. I’ve been meaning to watch BBC The Musketeers, their Robin Hood was good. Some of my favorite movies in the swashbuckling genre that are more recent (90s-2000s)

3 Musketeers ( Disney’s)
Mask of Zorro (Banderas)
The Count of Monte Cristo( Caveizal)
Pirates of the Caribbean( the first one)
The Musketeer
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas ( Brad Pitt animated)

I don’t really add the King Arthur films into this genre. They are more sword and sorcery than swashbuckling. Granted some of my favorites listed aren’t amazing films but they are fun

Extremely underrated film

I guess you’re right but the film was so damned gray and ugly. What do directors these days have against making things appealing to look at?
