An Indian friend of mine had a chalk swastika on the ground of his front porch, right in front of the door. The way it was designed, it looked nothing like a Nazi symbol. The lines were more curved, and there were dots in the middle.

I have no clue how it survived the rain, though.

did i say anything was ok? no. please don't put words in my mouth. I don't agree with the firing at all and have stated such.

1) exactly what you described happens all the time, illegal or not.
2) if you have a tattoo policy, they are allowed to tell you to cover up. (that is what they should have done in the first place, thus why there might be a good legal case out of it.
3) while it is typically illegal to fire someone due to there sexuality, they do have the right to ask for ones life style to not be expressed, or displayed while at work. Which is in the same realm as "covering a tattoo"

not to mention symbols all over the world take on different meanings in different locations. there's a very blurry line between what is considered religious in the first place. I'm sure there's symbols we take for granted every day, but in other parts of the country you could be in serious trouble over.

I'd like to see this go to court though, and see what happens.

I was once in a chinsese restuarant and i got all offended because they had a swastika. my freind had to explain the whole buhdist/swatika history to.
but THIS was a KOSHER resteraunt. so i would hope they would understand my dislike of thesymbol. Cause would they be offended if someone had a sighn outside saying "KILL ALL BUHDISTS" but it really was norwegian (or something) for "I love Computers"

Again 99.99999% of anyone wearing a swastika tat in this country is a nazi supporter. That means kill all jews, blacks, hispanics, catholics, gays, and a crap load of other people for the betterment of the "master race". Don't you see how that might be a push button issue for some people?

While I don't think anyone should be fired for their beliefs, I also don't think those beliefs should be expressed in the workplace either. Now this was the one in a million case of this being the good swastika representation but you can't blame people for not wanting something that symbolizes all that evil being a representative of your buisness either.

Man if you ever go to prison or jail, you must just be amazed at how many white buddists and hindus there are.

I agree. There are all kinds symbols that mean different kind of stuff.

The Religous Symbol that resembles a Nazi swasitka is rounded, it looks more like a flower, the Nazi one has sharp edges. This symbol was used all over the world, for Some Native American Tribes, it meant "wind", it is a symbol that was on the Thundergod Thor's Throne in Norse Mythology. That's where the Nazi's took it and changed it.

It would be an interesting case to hear, but it only resembles a Nazi swatisika, but isn't the same thing.

Come on the vast majority of people with swastika tats are racist *****ebags. Like 99.99%. I'm sure there are a few buddists and hindus rocking it, but I couldn't blame someone for making the obvious racist connotation. Some day the swastika might turn back into what it was but for now, there are still far too many living people that went through that hell for it to regarded as much more.

while there is probably legal wiggle room, offensive is offensive, no matter how you take it. And the place of work has reason to choose what they deem unacceptable. was it ignorant? yes. But they might of have the right to do so.

Again, ignorance should not be carte blanche to do whatever it is that you please simply because some people deem it as offensive or unacceptable. This would be like not hiring black people because many of your customers are racist. From a business standpoint it's a good idea, but in reality it's just another form of corportate racism.

Wrong. The Confederate Flag was created uniquely as a representation for the Conferdate side of the civil war. In addition this was the side that most supported slavery. The Swastika wasn't created by Nazi Germany it was used for thousands of years, Hitler just picked it up.

Point of fact the swastika as a symbol can represent many things including hate so it's power as a symbol is only in the perception of others. Because it can represent so many things, both good and bad, there's no reason to dismiss it as "bad" simply because it could mean something bad.

This would be like banning the color white because the KKK uses it in their robes.

the origin of the flag or is irrelevant. as you mentioned toward the swastika, it has the connotation because people have put it on...just like the confederate flag. the intention of the flag is also irrelevant. i don't think hitler (goebbels for that matter) picked a swastika because they wanted it to be viewed as a symbol of hate and evil but rather that of order and power...just as i'm sure the confederacy didn't design the flag for the purpose of being viewed as a symbol of ignnorance and a black eye in our history...but it is.

Exactly. I understand, if he has a Nazi Swastika, sure get rid of him. But, if it is surrounded by other Religous hindu symbols, there must be a reasonable amount of chance that it's not the Nazi Swastika.

This reminds me about this story about a College janitor who was black, reading a book about how that very college fought back against the KKK during the early 1900's and someone saw he was reading a book with "KKK" in the title, so the janitor got fired for discrimination. Political Correctness gone wild.
