what is a sweeps run?

in november, feburary and may the networks has what is called a sweeps period to check the ratings for tv shows.
in those periods the networks often air specials and bonus episodes of shows. the one execption to my knowledge to this is in years where the winter olympics is held like last year then most of the other networks air reruns in defference to the olympics

since next thursday is thanksgiving day will next mondays episode be a rerun?
