The Hollow Area is a new part of Aincrad with a dense forest temple area to explore. The battle system is designed to feel more like Sword Art Online compared to the PSP game. The speed is faster and the step system lets you move around an enemy to evade attacks which makes fights feel more active.

The Hollow Reaper is one of the new bosses players will face in the Hollow Area.

Namco Bandai’s new Sword Art Online game for PlayStation Vita will be made to have more action to match the feel of the actual series.

Namco Bandai’s new Sword Art Online game for PlayStation Vita will be made to have more action to match the feel of the actual series, compared to their earlier PSP game. Today, the publisher provided a look at the game’s battle system and its special “Burst” gauge and attack features.


Unlike the PSP title, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment, where the battles revolved around auto-attacks, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment introduces a new “Burst Gauge” system to pull off special attacks.


The new action-based system with attacks that are done by pressing buttons to do “Burst Attacks” which use up the meter.


As long as the meter keeps filling up, you’ll get to keep using Burst Attacks; however, while the damage will continue increasing, there’s some sort of “Risk” involved, which is indicated with its own meter to the right of the Burst Gauge.

The “step” feature also uses the Burst Gauge, which is used to do short-dashes towards different directions.
​

The step feature will have its offensive and defensive uses, as it can be used to evade enemy attacks or quickly dash behind them for a positional advantage.
​

As long as your Burst Gauge isn’t empty, you’ll get to keep using Burst Attacks and steps, but knowing how to use them and making sure it doesn’t run out will be the key of winning fights.

If things start looking dicey in the middle of your Burst Attack, you can always use a step to cancel the attack for an evasion, then step again towards the enemy to continue doing more damage. The steps will also work for canceling out auto-attacks.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will be Namco Bandai’s latest game in the Sword Art Online series, that will be focusing more on movement and special attacks to match the feel of the actual series. This week’s Dengeki PlayStation magazine shares new details on the upcoming Vita game.


According to the report, the new mystery heroine who you’ll be meeting in the new unexplored “Hollow Area” of the reborn Aincrad, goes by the name Philia. In addition to Asuna, there will be other partners you’ll get to team up with, and they will also come with their own actions.

Namco Bandai previously teased that the game will have co-op, and according to magazine reports, it will be through ad-hoc connectivity, where four players along with their partners can team up for an eight-man party to take on the dungeons of the new Aincrad.

Those of you who might’ve been concerned about having to play as Kirito, and possibly having a full party of nothing but Kirito clones, worry no more! In the previous PSP title, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment, there was a town called Arc Sophia, where the characters used as a home base to strategize for their next dungeon run. The town will also be there in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, and it’s also where you’ll be starting the game.

The screenshot above is a look at an event featuring Leafa along with a character by the name of Sinon, who appeared in the PSP game and the light novel series. This is just one of the many events that will be featured in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. Events will also have a touch-screen feature, allowing you to go through them with ease.

We recently got a peek at other virtual MMORPG heroines like Leafa and Silica, who will be appearing in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. Now, the game’s latest trailer shows the game’s protagonist, Kirito, holding hands with a number of heroines in the game, along with a closer look at battles.​

The trailer starts out with a fight scene between Kirito and Philia, who is said to be an “Orange Player,” or one who has previously committed a crime in the virtual MMORPG.

After showing off some new parts of the Hollow Area and co-op actions you can do with your partners during battles, the trailer gives us a short tour of Arksophia, the same town from the previous PSP title, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment, which will pretty much be your home base when you’re not taking on dungeons.

You’ll get to communicate with various friends and partners of the series in town. It’s also where you’ll be able to go out on dates and hold hands with the likes of Asuna, Lisbeth, Silica, Yui, Leafa, Sinon, and Strea.

We also get a look at the “Hollow Missions” you’ll be taking on in the new area, where you’ll be required to investigate various parts as a special task. In multiplayer, up to eight players consisting of you and three other players, along with partners, will be fighting old and new bosses in the Hollow Area.

The trailer ends with Philia admitting that she had previously killed some people, which explains how she became an Orange Player.

To bring you up to speed, Laughing Coffin is an infamous player-killing “Red Guild” in the world of Sword Art Online.

Just like in the real world, there are groups that commit organized crimes in the virtual world of Sword Art Online, and it looks like you’ll be tackling the kingpin of one of the biggest dark guilds in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, reports Dengeki. This individual seems to have a connection with the new character, Philia.

The man in question was first seen towards the end of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment’s latest TV commercial, where the orange rep character Philia is shown telling him that she wished she never met him.


To bring you up to speed, Laughing Coffin is an infamous player-killing “Red Guild” in the world of Sword Art Online, and as some of you may have noticed, the guy in the trailer has the guild’s emblem on his glove.

As it turns out, he is known as PoH (pronounced Pooh—yes, like the bear) and is the leader behind the player killing guild.

PoH is a “red player,” meaning he’s gone beyond the crimes of your average orange player, and is also known as the murderer. He’s known for having a mysterious charismatic vibe, and has killed countless other players.


While we still don’t know what his relationship with Philia is, the story of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will be revealing it, along with more on the dark guild.

Those of you who watched Sword Art Online might remember the timid girl Sachi, a member of Kirito’s first group of friends in the Moonlit Black Cats guild, who suffered a tragic end. According to Dengeki’s latest report, she will mysteriously be making a return in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.

As some of you may have noticed in the game’s latest trailer, we got a glimpse of Sachi, too. So yes, if you’re wondering whether she’ll actually be part of the game instead of just flashbacks, Dengeki says that she will be.

(If you wish to avoid spoilers, I advise you to skip the tidbit below)

In the original world of Aincrad in Sword Art Online, those who died in the game also died in real life. As you may recall, Sachi and other members of the Moonlit Black Cats guild met a tragic ending after finding themselves in a locked down area of a dungeon, which caused multiple monsters to spawn, killing most of the players who were in the trap.
​

​

According to Dengeki, Kirito and Sachi will be reuniting once again in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. While the reason for her return to the new Aincrad still remains unknown, it looks like you’ll be able to have her in your party in the upcoming game.

In addition to all the heroines you’ll be able to go on dates with in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, you’ll get to meet up to 100 different characters to become friends with. Dengeki gives us a look at some of the cooperative skills you’ll be using with them, and monsters you’ll be fighting.


The “Switch” technique is one of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment’s new abilities. When used, it’ll automatically switch your enemy’s target player to another. So, for example, if you want to use a slow sword skill or an item, you might want to use Switch so you don’t get hit. You can activate it by pressing the bottom right button on the screen.

According to Dengeki, the Switch ability was featured in the light novel and the second episode of the anime, when Kirito and Asuna faced “Illfang the Kobold Lord” and pulled off some sweet cooperative moves, which was the inspiration behind the new ability in the game.

The above is a look a one of the fierce monsters, called “Shadow Phantasm” that you’ll be fighting alongside Philia. She is shown giving Kirito a heads up whenever the enemy is about to do a powerful attack.

As previously mentioned, you’ll be able to befriend over 100 different NPC characters who can join you in your adventures, such as Shinya, shown in the above images.

The latest update on Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment introduces us to the “Just Attack” system, which gives you a chance to do even more damage.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will have a new action-based “Burst Gauge” system, where you can fill up your meter and use it to pull off special attacks and dashes. Dengeki shows us an additional feature to the Burst abilities, that gives them an extra boost.

As seen in our earlier report, the Burst Attack can be used to a large amount of damage to enemies. The latest update introduces us to the “Just Attack” system, which gives you a chance to do even more damage.
​

​

The Just Attack happens when you see the ring appear after doing a regular attack and perfectly timing a Burst Attack during this moment, which will make it do more damage than usual. Learning its timing will be a crucial part of mastering this ability, which can come in handy for tough boss fights.
​

​

By timing your steps against enemy attacks, you can also pull off a “Just Side-step” or a “Just Back-step,” which not only avoids hits, but also gives you added benefits.
​

​

During the Just Step, you’ll be invulnerable to enemy hits, and you won’t take any damage. Again, pulling it off will additionally give you various buffs like attack ups, critical ups, and even Burst Gauge recovery.


When you’re not out there Just Attacking and Just Stepping your way around enemies, you’ll be able to sit back and relax in bed with your heroine partner, which appears to have some sort of Enjoy and Talk time meter. These events will be full of different conversations with your partner.

Those of you who’d rather play without being bothered by other players can also join multiplayer with a group of partners; however, that’ll limit you to a total of five players.

With over 100 characters you can befriend in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, Kirito will have plenty of ladies to choose from to take on dungeons and going on dates. So, you might be wondering “what about the male characters?” Bandai Namco recently shared a bit on the subject.


During the “Dengeki Game Festival 2014” that took place over the weekend, Bandai Namco producer Yosuke Futami, Kirito voice actor Yo****sugu Matsuoka, and others got together to talk about the upcoming PlayStation Vita title.

After showing a live stream of gameplay footage, featuring Kirito taking on monsters with Philia, and then walking around town holding Asuna’s hands and then carrying her in his arms. They also showed a look at some pillow talk with the Beast Tamer Silica.

“You’ll also be able to hold hands and more with male characters,” revealed Bandai Namco producer Futami during the session.

“A manly friendship!” he exclaimed. While we don’t know what are the other things you’ll be able to do as part of the Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment bromance, Bandai Namco will be sharing more on that in the near future.

The main hub in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is kind of like a command center, but there seem to be plenty of mysteries behind the area. Next to it is the Sea of Trees, one of the unexplored areas of the new Aincrad.

Dating will be one of the pastimes you’ll have access to in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, and the ultimate goal is to have some pillow-talk with your sweetheart, followed by a special CG event. Dengeki gives us a new look at that feature and more.

Before getting to the pillow-talk, let’s first take a look at the different types of areas you’ll be exploring in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.


Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will feature six main areas including the hub where you’ll be starting your journey and gearing up for the next dungeon. Each one will have a different terrain and atmosphere.

Here’s a look at the different places:

The main hub is kind of like a command center, but there seem to be plenty of mysteries behind the area. Next to that is the Sea of Trees, one of the unexplored areas of the new Aincrad.

Similar to the Sea of Trees area, not much is known about the Netherworld area, since it hasn’t been explored much either. The Giant Hole area is said to have a huge dungeon somewhere below.

The Bay area is an exotic place, where you’ll find hidden caves and other sea creatures. Finally, the Floating Rocks area appears to be home to a giant tower, where one might find a bunch of flying monsters.

Players will be taking on the “Hollow Missions” that will span across all six Hollow Areas. You can acquire special skills, weapons and more by completing these missions that will have you take on tasks such as “defeat this monster”.

Those of you who’ve kept up with our past Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment posts may have seen plenty of CG events that show how you’ll get to spend some pillow-talk time with the heroine characters after dates. This time, we get a look at Strea and Sinon.
