You know something? Sex sells. But I think it sells not because guys are dirty or girls are ****s, I think it is because people are sexual beings as much as they may be embarrassed by it.
Tomb Raider is probablly one of the most famous video games, but not just because of the surface eye candy. The games are actually entertaining for a while. Maybe not the best games ever, but they were fun to play. You always get the people who say things like "What is hot about pixels and polygons?", but rarely is one drooling over their screen; they are emersing themselves in the game.
Lara Croft was considered a sex icon (back when the games were popular at least), because you were imagining her as a real woman doing cool stuff like that. And I don't think it's fair to look at her and call it degrading or belittling of women and then just shrug at Duke Nukem or God of War or even Solid Snake. Most people playing Duke Nukem didn't look like him, same with "Kratos"(?) and no one playing a game is as talented as Snake. But guys don't complain and call it "an unrealistic interpretation".
In case you are wondering my thesis is that sexuality shouldn't be hidden or banned from games. People should consider that video games are now legitamate entertainment systems. I can surf the web, message friends, listen to music or watch a movie (DVD or Blueray) all on one console. And it cost me real world money to do so, so why should my violence or sexuality that I am willing to PAY to see be censored or cut because some parents are too lazy or scared to say "NO. You can't have this!!" to their child.
Saying no doesn't mean you don't love someone.
I mean we understand that. As a society, we get it. When a girl says "no", one a date any guy worth his salt acknowledges her. So why does it change for the kids?
I'm not asking for hentai games. But I don't think anyone would die if Wal*Mart or Game Stop would carry "AO" games. I just want sexuality to be used properly.
Red Ninja- Improper use of sexuality. The game sucks, so they make the main character "hot" hoping to get sales. NO!
Tomb Raider 360- Maybe not the best game ever, but it plays solidly and has a story that is engaging. The bonus is that you get fan service/eye candy while playing. Proper usage!
God of War- Kratos is hot. Lots of girl gamers have said this, he is friggin hot. But the game is a solid game. Proper Usage!
Superman- IMPROPER use. Make him look like Brandon Routh or make him look like some kind of awesome guy..it still sucks to play.
So give us the next Tomb Raider! We're ready. Resident Evil 3 was a good start...
