Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed the Tales of Berseria game for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 at the "Tales of Festival 2015" event in Tokyo on Saturday. The mothership title game will star Rina Satou as the protagonist Velvet. Satou was a surprise guest at the announcement's unveiling.

The game marks the first time in the series history that a game will feature only a main heroine. Mutsumi Inomata is returning to the franchise to design the characters.

"I won't give up. I'll grab onto them as many times as it takes."

The main character designer for Velvet is Mutsumi Inomata. Velvet is apparently a female pirate, and themes of pirates and ships were shown during the short scenery video they played at the event.

No background information on Velvet or the game was given, as they said it is not yet time to give out said info. ufotable will be in charge of the animated cutscenes.

In a trailer shown at the event, we see Velvet trapped in prison. In another scene, she is riding something like a ship. Later on, we see snow and grassy plains, as well as oceans in the ship scene.

According to the press release, the game will have “cities covered in snow, perpetual summer islands, autumn leaves, and evening sunsets,” as well as a “diversity of situations” compared to previous entries in the series.

Gematsu - First details on Tales of Berseria’s setting, protagonist

Velvet (Protagonist)

“I won’t give up. I’ll bite them as many times as it takes.”

In the wake of an incident that occurred three years ago, her life was completely changed. She is becoming an existence that greatly shakes the world.

The Midgand Sacred Kingdom, which consists of several large lands and countless groups of islands.

A world where ship handling and the art of sailing have advanced.

In the north and south of Midgand Sacred Kingdom in which the game is set, there is great variation in climate due to the land. (Harsh winters, everlasting summers, etc.)

Bandai Namco shared the latest on Tales of Berseria recently, with some new details on the story and the introduction of a new character named Laiphaset.

Bandai Namco shared the latest on Tales of Berseria recently, with some new details on the story and the introduction of a new character named Laiphaset.

The character in the above image is a young boy named Laiphaset, and was designed by Minoru Iwamoto, and voiced by Azumi Asakura. If the protagonist Velvet is considered the “shadow” then he is made to be the “light” in the story, and is expected to play a big role in the story.

Additionally, the “Linear Motion Battle System” will be evolved in Tales of Berseria. Here are some of the notes on that:

  • Players will get to control characters with a free run base.
  • Camera angles can be freely moved around during battle.
  • The Arts you want to use can be set on all four buttons of circle, X, triangle, and square, and you can do combos by combining up buttons to decide which Art to use next.

As for the controls, they’re said to be familiar to what we’ve had in the Tales series, and described as “battles with speedy and refreshing feelings” and “controls that just about anyone can pick up and play with ease” as some of the focus.

There’s a lot more new features, including new systems that will be announced in the near future for Tales of Berseria.

Tales of Berseria is in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Velvet will visit a wide range of breathtaking environments as she travels the world in an all-new adventure developed by the celebrated team behind the Tales of series. Tales of Berseria set in the past world of Tales of Zestiria
Published 13 hours ago. 335 comments.

New details from Weekly Famitsu.

Berseria-Same-World-Zesteria-Fami.jpg

Tales of Berseria and Tales of Zestiria are set in the same world, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals. But the story of Tales of Berseria is set long in the past.

The setting of Tales of Berseria is known as the “Wasteland.” The continent in the middle of this world is what eventually comes to be called “Glenwood,” which is seen in Tales of Zestiria.

Though it’s set in the same world, the world of the past in Tales of Berseria is completely different than that of the future. Place names such as towns and nature are all different from the future seen in Tales of Zesteria, too. But there are also places where you’ll be able to recall the culture and nature of the future.

Famitsu also has some details on Tales of Berseria‘s battle system. Entering battle will follow the same smooth transition as seen in Tales of Zestiria, with further improved control and field of vision. As previously detailed, you’ll be able to activate Artes which can be registered to the Circle, X, Triangle, and Square buttons. Through this configuration, you will be able to trigger and coordinate various Artes based on your play style and the order that you press buttons.
A few keywords were also shared:

  • Goma Disease – A disease that transforms humans into monsters. Many of those affected by the illness are reduced to violence and attack others, but there are some who manage to keep their sense of reason.
  • Goma – Things that transformed humans into monsters. Animals, for example, can be Goma that carry the Goma Disease.
  • Seirei – A race that deals with artes that use the power of nature. Most of them are not self-conscious and are used as familiars by humans. Your ally Laphicet is part of this race.
  • Scarlet Night – The night of the scarlet moon. It is said to have some sort of connection to Goma Disease.
While details are unknown, three key items—a compass, comb, and apple—are said to have a deep connection to the story and characters of Tales of Berseria.

Finally, the magazine reveals that the same character designers for Tales of Zestiria—Mutsumi Inomata, Kosuke Fujishima, Daigo Okumura, and Minoru Iwamoto—are the character designers for Tales of Berseria
Tales of Berseria is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2016, and for PlayStation 4 and PC in North America and Europe during an unannounced release window.

Tales of Xillia 2 reused/recycled way too much content from the first Xillia. That was a disappointing aspect of it.

I just hope they don't go that route with Berseria or anywhere near that extent.

Bandai Namco has released new details and screenshots for Tales of Berseria, detailing the RPG’s theme, setting, and story, characters Velvet and Laphicet, and Linear Motion Battle System.

Get the information, which is a mix of old and new, below.

■ Theme, Setting, and Story
Theme
Tales-of-Berseria_01-03-15_001.jpg

“Emotion and Reason.”

Tales of Berseria depicts the clash of emotion and reason following the protagonist Velvet, who has strong emotions, as she comes into conflict with characters who have forsaken emotion and only use reason.

Setting
Tales-of-Berseria_01-03-15_002.jpg

In the world of Wasteland, there is a vast land that spreads out from its center. In the far future, it is a continent known as Glenwood.

The setting of the story is Midgand Sacred Kingdom, a large power across the ocean that reigns over the continent. Its vast lands and countless islands are organized into jurisdictions known as “territories.”

Even within the same kingdom, there is an extreme difference in temperature between the north and south, as well as great climate differences depending on the land. The changes in climate also influence the culture, including different building structures and way of living depending on the territory.

In recent years, the world has been getting colder, especially the northern region which is getting buried in snow.

The Midgand Sacred Kingdom has developed shipbuilding and sailing technology, and trade is actively carried out throughout various locations. Because ocean currents and weather changes can be violent, trade ships use a specific route, and pirates aiming to steel their cargo appear frequently.

Prologue
This is the beginning of the legend. And the true story that was forgotten in the far future.
Three years ago…

Because of the rare disease called Gomabyo which changes humans into monsters, the world had reached an age of confusion.

Velvet lives in a remote village in the Midgand Sacred Kingdom. She and her family help each other out through difficult situations and live their days comfortably.
However, the night that the scarlet moon rises, everything that surrounds her is changed. She is betrayed by those she had trusted, and not only are the blood relatives she loves snatched away, her left hand is swallowed by a mysterious power, and is transformed into the hand of a demon with the ability to eat monsters.
Present day….

Time moved on, and three years passed. With the advent of the savior, one woman makes her way through a kingdom that is restoring order to the world.
Her name is Velvet Clou (Kurau). In her eyes, you can see the fury towards the savior who took away everything from her.

Terms

  • Gomabyo (Goma Disease) – A disease that transforms humans into monsters. Many of those affected by the illness are reduced to violence and attack others, but there are some who manage to keep their sense of reason.
  • Goma – Things that transform humans into monsters. Animals, for example, can be Goma that carry the Goma Disease.
  • Seirei – A race that deals with artes that use the power of nature. Most of them are not self-conscious and are used as familiars by humans.
  • Scarlet Night – The night of the scarlet moon. It is said to have some sort of connection to Goma Disease.
Keys to the Story
A “compass,” “comb,” and “apple” are deeply involved with the story and characters of Tales of Berseria.

■ Characters
Velvet Crau

Tales-of-Berseria_01-03-15_003.jpg

  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 19
  • Height: 170cm
  • Weapon: Piercing Blade
  • Combat Type: Piercing Swordswoman
  • Race: Gyoma?
  • Voice actor: Rina Sato
In the past, she had a plain and good humored personality, and was a girl rich in sensitivity and love for her family. However, she changed entirely in the wake of a certain incident that occurred three years ago. Her smile is now almost eliminated, and she instead harbors the cold feelings known as anger and hatred. With her original kindness suppressed, and her unexpectedly cold-hearted passion burning bright, she will soon become an existence that greatly shakes the world.
Her left hand, which is covered in bandages, can transform into something inhuman by way of a mysterious power that swallowed her on the day of the incident. Her left hand, similar to a Goma, exhibits superhuman powers, but seems to possess abilities different from the common Gyoma.

Laphicet

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 10
  • Height: 142cm
  • Weapon: Paper Leaves
  • Combat Type: Seirei Mage

At first, the way he has no goals of his own his own irritates Velvet, but throughout their journey, he learns various things and both his heart and will grow and develop. He eventually becomes support for Velvet, who harbors a violent rage.

■ Linear Motion Battle System

Tales-of-Berseria_01-03-15_005.jpg

The battle system of Tales of Berseria is the conventional Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS), now with free-run-based character control, free camera control, and artes set to the Circle, X, Triangle, and Square buttons.

Going from the conventional style of triggering artes with the left stick and Circle or X buttons, Tales of Berseria sets artes to the Circle, X, Triangle, and Square buttons. Due to this, players can concentrate on using the left stick for movement and the buttons for artes. It is similar to the conventional system and lets players intuitively link together artes.

Additionally, with the addition of free camera control, you can easily adjust the viewpoint during play and change the camera to the angle of your preference.

■ Wasteland
From snow-filled cities to summer islands, autumn leaves, and the setting sun, the diversity of situations have increased compared to previous entries in the series.

I like this design. The main one looks like a tribute to Tetsuya Nomura's trademark of belts and zippers everywhere. And the pandering is overdone. They didn't go that far for main heroine Milla Maxwell's design in Xillia.

■ New Characters

Rokurou

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 22
  • Height: 180cm
  • Weapon: Dual Swords
  • Battle Type: Two-Swords Swordsman

  • ToB_02-25-16_001.jpg

A cheerful and free-spirited young swordsman. He even approaches the passionate Velvet with an open attitude.

A number of years prior, the Daemonblight disease broke out and he became a Daemon. But rather than get him down, he used that power in order to master his family’s traditional sword techniques and continued to walk his own path. While he’s a Daemon, he maintains rationale and tags along with Velvet. He unintentionally takes care of Laphicet and ends up being fairly good at it. While he carries his cherished long sword called the “Sword of Life” on his back, he stubbornly does not want to take it out. For this reason, he usually fights wielding a pair of daggers.

Eleanor

  • CV: Ami Koshimizu
  • Character Design: Kousuke Fujishima
  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 18
  • Height: 165cm
  • Weapon: Staff
  • Battle Type: First-Class Taimashi

  • ToB_02-25-16_002.jpg

A Taimashi who belongs to the “Seiryou.” As a first-class Taimashi, she runs about day and night in efforts to free the world from the Daemon threat.

She is very serious and does not forget to be considerate of others, but there is a side to her that always tries to do the right thing. She tends to project her emotions easily because of her honest personality, but she is aware of her own immaturity and tries to devote herself to the heartless “truth.” Velvet bares her fangs at the Seiryou, and as a Taimashi who protects the world from Daemons, Eleanor will cross swords with her a number of times.

■ Character and Story Supplements

Velvet and the Seiryou

ToB_02-25-16_003.jpg

In Velvet’s quest for revenge against the savior, the Seiryou become an obstacle and her conflict against them deepens.

Velvet and Eleanor

ToB_02-25-16_004.jpg

As Eleanor is a Taimashi, Velvet bares her fangs against her and the two cross swords a number of times.

Taimashi and Malaks

ToB_02-25-16_005.jpg

The Taimashi employ Malaks and uses their power to fight Daemons. There are also Malaks that appear as non-human, but a common point about them is that “Malaks are people without ego.”

The Existence of Daemons

ToB_02-25-16_006.jpg

The many humans affected by the Daemonblight disease go berserk and attack humans, but some of them can stay rational. Development of the disease varies, as there are those whose appearances change, as well as those whose appearances do not change, just like Velvet and Rokurou.

Velvet and Rokurou

ToB_02-25-16_007.jpg

In the wake of a certain event, Rokurou accompanies Velvet in order to return a favor.

While one side of Rokurou is possessed by a strong sense of duty, he is odd in that he for some reason stubbornly does not want to take out the “Sword of Life” long sword he carries on his back. He seems to be caring and often following around Velvet.

Laphicet and Rokurou

ToB_02-25-16_008.jpg

Before having any reason to, Rokurou takes notice of Laphicet and takes care of him.
He shows his helpfulness by advising Velvet on how to handle Laphicet.

First-Class Taimashi Eleanor

ToB_02-25-16_009.jpg

A usually kind woman who does not forget to be considerate of others. As a Taimashi, she not only stands against the Daemon threat, but listens to the voice of the people and and puts effort into being their power.

Next up

Seiryou and the Taimashi

ToB_02-25-16_010.jpg

The Seiryou’s Taimashi are dispatched to various towns and harbors to protect the people from the Daemon threat and maintain order in the country. The people welcome them as heroes, and the Seiryou’s ideologies are gradually spreading among them.

Misc.

People gather around the minstrels. Perhaps it’s thanks to the Seiryou, that even with fear of Daemons, that it appears the state of affairs is peaceful.

ToB_02-25-16_011.jpg

After coming across a Yak, Rokurou offers an explanation to Velvet. There are a variety of things to discover while walking around.

ToB_02-25-16_012.jpg

■ New Keywords

Taimashi

Holy warriors with the ability to battle Daemons. Using the power of Malaks, they use artes and fight to protect the people. The Taimashi are a heroic presence for the people suffering at the hands of Daemons.

Seiryou

To save the people from the Daemon threat, the Midgand Kingdom established the Taimashi.

With its original intention to “bring order and peace by carrying out the truth,” it leads the kingdom’s politics and military affairs. The Taimashi is divided into classes based on ability. The head of the Taimashi is first under the Seiryou, followed by the Special Class, First Class, and Second Class.

■ Liberation-Linear Motion Battle System
Arte Links

ToB_02-25-16_013.jpg

With the ability to freely customize your “Arte Sets,” anyone can let out a variety of linked artes. The same as it’s been in the series so far, depending on how your artes are set, you could not only link and enjoy using artes, but once you’re used to the controls, you can more freely than ever link and unleash artes to meet the demands of the situation.

Arte Sets

ToB_02-25-16_014.jpg

You can freely set artes to suit your play style using the following rules:

  • Artes can be set to the Circle, X, Triangle, and Square buttons.

  • For each button, you can set four stages of artes (four artes per button).

  • You can set the artes freely in your favorite spots regardless of type or order.
Since the artes you set are linked in order from the first stage to the second, third, and fourth, you should set your artes to each button while considering the combination and order of the artes you want to link.
Also, since you can modify your Arte Sets even during battle, you can freely change them based on the situation. And because your sets are never tied down, you can customize it to meet your play style.

—Additional Information #1: As the game progresses, even players who aren’t used to Arte Sets can get a sense of how to combine the various artes.

—Additional Information #2: In the case that five artes are linked, the artes will start from the first stage in the set, and after reaching the fourth stage, revert to the first stage and continue.

Linking Artes

During battle, you can use the Arte Sets tied to the Circle, X, Triangle, and Square buttons. Artes are triggered from the first stage, and in the middle of a set, you can connect to a different set you want to link by pressing the artes’ corresponding button. As long as you’re within the amount of times you can link, you can link to any arte.

For example: You trigger the Triangle Arte Set. During its four-stage run, you can connect any of the other links by pressing one of the four face buttons. Based on the press order and combination, you can let out a variety of different patterns.

ToB_02-25-16_015.jpg

Regarding the number of links: The number of times you can link artes is determined by the amount of “Soul” the character possesses. The amount of “Soul” you possess correlates to the amount of times you can link artes. However, by using a still unannounced new element, it’s possible to link artes even past that limit.

Regarding link compensation bonuses: If you meet certain requirements and link artes, various compensation bonuses will occur. Consider the order and combination when linking for a more effective bonus. Since there is a chance that you’ll get an effect that increases your probability of stealing Souls, you should get familiar with the system and aim for bonuses.

Soul Gauge

ToB_02-25-16_017.jpg

The Soul Gauge is a new system that’s different from the TP (Technical Points) and CC (Chain Capacity) seen in the series so far. This gauge consists of “Soul” icons, the amount of which you have are represented by a light blue diamond-shaped icon.

  • I. Each character that participates in battle possesses “Souls.”
  • II. You can link artes with only the amount of Souls you posses.
  • III. Souls can be stolen from the enemy, and enemies can steal Souls from you.
You’ll start battle with three Soul icons, but can increase them by satisfying conditions during the battle.
Artes have a set amount of Soul Gauge points that they consume, and as you use them, your gauge will continue to decline. (One Soul is equal to 30 Soul Gauge points.) Even when your Soul Gauge reaches zero, you will still be able to use artes, but there are a variety of disadvantages, such as your attack being easily repelled. The Soul Gauge is automatically restored after a certain amount of time passes.

Stealing Souls: Both allies and enemies possess Souls, and you can steal them from enemies. The amount of Souls you have will always fluctuate in battle:
—Conditions for Increasing Souls During Battle

  • Defeat the enemy and steal their Souls.
  • Stun or inflict the enemy with a status ailment, then steal their Souls.
  • ??? (Reveal coming in a future update.)
  • ??? (Reveal coming in a future update.)
  • Use a specific item or somehow recover fallen Souls.
  • If a party member falls, or if you avoid an enemy attack with an Around Step, a Soul will pop out on the battlefield.
—Conditions for Reducing Souls During Battle

  • If you’re stunned or inflicted with a status ailment and the enemy steals your Souls.
  • ??? (Reveal coming in a future update.)
  • Instead of losing Souls, there is a special action that gives you an upper hand in the fight.
The maximum amount of Souls you can possess is five, and the minimum is one (you start the battle with three).
Successfully stolen Souls will fly towards the character in a bluish-white line of light.

Basic Combat

  • Artes: Artes are attacks and magic techniques that you can use through assigned buttons. Artes are different for each character. Characters will continue to learn new artes as they level up. Artes can stun the enemy, inflict status ailments, hit weaknesses, and by considering the order and such that you unleash them, could help steal Souls from the enemy.
  • Souls: An icon-ification of your willpower and spiritual power that lets you link your artes based on the amount you possess. You can steal Souls from the enemy, and enemies can also steal them from you.
  • Guard: Defend yourself from an enemy attack to lessen the damage with L1.
  • Around Step: While holding down the L1 button, by flicking the left stick in any direction, you can perform an Around Step. This can be used to avoid an enemy’s attack or to move around quickly. There are bonuses to performing an Around Step with proper timing.
Character-Specific Battle Outline
Rokuro: An advance guard-type character who fights using two swords. He can use artes with various attributes.

New characters revealed in Weekly Jump.

The latest issue of Weekly Jump reveals two new characters in Tales of Berseria.

Magileux, voiced by Satomi Sato and desgined by Daigo Okumura, is an unidentifiable woman also referred to as the Bogus Witch. She is described as a mood maker, but she also has a dark side.

Bienphu, voiced by Naomi Nagasawa, is a unique, hat-wearing Malak, who appears along the line of a mascot character. He is different from most Malak without egos, as he is very expressive. His favorite phrases are “Bien” and “Bad!”

The magazine also has information on the new “Break Soul” system used in battle. These are linked actions that go beyond the limit and trigger special effects for each character.

Finally, the magazine confirms that the theme song is called “Burn” by the rock band Flow.
