Bandai Namco Games of America and Europe have released a new set of 77 Tales of Berseria screenshots showcasing new characters Magilou and Bienfu, as well as the new “Break Soul” battle feature.

Here are brief introductions, via a press release and the Tales of Blog:
Magilou (voiced in Japanese by Satomi Sato)
Magilou, an unknown woman who proclaims herself to be the “great sorceress” while others see her as the practitioner of “unlicensed witchcraft.” Her free and carefree behavior can make her the life of the party, but this trickster has a hidden dark side towards Velvet.
Bienfu (voiced in Japanese by Nao Nagasawa)
Bienfu, is a peculiar malak (a spiritual being that can harness the power of nature) that has a unique form and personality, often expressing himself by saying, “Bieeen” and “Bad!” Although small in size, he makes up for it with his strength and bravery.
Bienfu and Magilou appear to have history together, but this mysterious relationship doesn’t seem to have ended well.
Break Soul
A new feature of the battle system where a special action that gives a player an advantage in battle and enables them to exceed the upper limit of performable artes per combo. You’ll also be able to change the controlled character mid battle!
Tales of Berseria is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2016. A western release is planned for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Tales of Berseria details Magilou and BIenfu

Published 1 hour ago. 2 comments.
The “Head of Menagerie” and the peculiar malak.

After releasing over 70 screenshots of the duo last week, Bandai Namco has shared details on new Tales of Berseria characters Magilou and Bienfu.

Get the information below.
Magilou
“I suppose you’ll never understand. People can be so miserable. Not that it matters, really.”

  • Gender: Female
  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: 160cm
  • Weapon: Guardian
  • Fighting type: Witch
  • Tribe: Human
  • Voiced by: Satomi Sato
  • ToB_03-22-16_001.jpg

Magilou is a mysterious woman who introduces herself as a “great sorceress” and “Head of Menagerie”, even though their reputation is for “unlicensed witchcraft”.

She is easy going and rather reckless at times. Extroverted and chatty, Magilou could break the ice in any party conversation, but there’s something sinister about her: something in the heartless things she says to Velvet, and the callous phrases she can sometimes spout, that hint at an evil edge befitting the title “witch”.

Magilou’s chatty demeanour hides veiled intent behind gibberish, jokes and lies. Though she seems cheerful enough, there is something of a trickster about her. Occasionally her heartless behaviour can uncover great truths.

ToB_03-22-16_002.jpg

Though Magilou is cheerful, occasionally she can be cruel towards Velvet.

Her fighting style is a rear guard type and she is great at fire and water artes.

In melee battles, she transforms her guardian into various forms and fights in a skillful way!

Bienfu

“Bieeen! The bad times have returned!”

  • Gender: Male?
  • Tribe: Malak
  • Voiced by: Nao Nagasawa

  • ToB_03-22-16_003.jpg

A peculiar malak with a rather unique hat.

Bienfu can happily be called an eccentric with its characteristic style and habit of saying “Bieeen” and “Bad!”
Bienfu seems feeble but thrives on adversity and lives its life with shrewd attention and strong intent.

It seems Bienfu and Magilou may have crossed paths before, though not in good circumstances, as whenever it meets her, it is incredibly fearful.

Unlike many other malaks who do not have their own will, Bienfu shows its personality with various facial expressions.

ToB_03-22-16_004.jpg

Laphicet faces Bienfu. They look different but they are both malaks. How are they connected to each other?

ToB_03-22-16_005.jpg

Bienfu is caught by Magilou. It seems they know to each other but what is their relationship?

Tales of Berseria details Break Soul system

Published 15 hours ago. 57 comments.

Character-specific special actions.

Bandai Namco is continuing its Tales of Berseria information blast this week with more information on the game’s “Break Soul” system, which we in the over 70 screenshots released earlier this week.

Get the information below.

(Editor’s Note: I left a pair of terms in Japanese because Bandai Namco will likely provide official names when it shares its localized version of my translation, which will probably be posted at the Tales of Blog later today.)
■ New Battle System: “Break Soul”
Break Soul enables players to exceed the upper limit of performable artes per combo. They’re character-specific actions that trigger special effects.
Basic Outline
If you possess three or more souls, you can trigger an action with a special ability. By using Break Soul, you can exceed the upper limit of performable artes per combo. Additionally, character-specific actions are also being prepared, whose effects and ability each vary greatly. By switching between characters based on enemies and the state of battle, the breadth of battle will rapidly expand.
Additionally, there are stages to Break Soul, and as you play through the game, you’ll unlock even more ability.

  • Conditions for triggering: If you possess three or more souls, press the R2 button to consume one soul and trigger Break Soul.
■ Break Soul by Character

Velvet’s Break Soul: “Consume Claw”

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_001.jpg

A battle specialized ability that combines strength and attack.
With the power of her left hand, Velvet eats the ability of her opponent, and enters a strengthened state called “喰魔” that reveals her inhuman left hand. When certain conditions are met in this state, you can unleash powerful special moves called “秘術.”

As compensation for the powerful ability, your HP will gradually decrease in the strengthened state, and since when your HP is low the power of your 秘術 increases, it can be used for maximum effect depending on the direction of battle.
If you press the R2 button, the attack that tears apart enemies via the change in your left hand will be triggered.

A feature of Velvet’s Break Soul is that depending on the species of the attacked enemy, the “strengthened effects” and “types of 秘術 triggered” change.

—Species: Beast-Type

Strengthen effect: Increases damage to the degree of the enemy’s high attack power.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_002.jpg

秘術: “Scarlet Edge” can be triggered.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_003.jpg

—Species: Amorphous-Type
Strengthen Effect: Increases damage to the degree of the enemy’s high defense power.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_004.jpg

秘術: “Thunder Blitz” can be triggered.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_005.jpg

Laphicet’s Break Soul: “Divine Pain”

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_006.jpg

When you trigger Laphicet’s ability, the field expands to halve the damage received from the enemy for five seconds. Also, when the effect is cancelled, you can heal all of your allies’ HP. And when you’re surrounded by enemies, or if you’re in a battle against a formidable foe, it’s an ability that will get your allies from a in a pinch to back into a good position.

If you press the R2 button, the field expands with Laphicet at its center. There is also a hitbox in the expanded field. If you can hit a guarded enemy, it is also possible to break their guard.

Rokurou’s Break Soul: “Retribution”

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_007.jpg

By receiving an enemy’s attack, you can trigger a powerful counter technique. It’s difficult to use, but is very powerful and a successful hit will result HP recovery for Rokurou.

If you press the R2 button, Rokurou will take stance and a counter will be triggered when you receive an enemy attack. If the counter is successful, the “Retribution Rip” counter technique will be triggered. This is particularly effective against enemies that dish out big attacks, but if you use it well, you can drag surrounding enemies into the mix when you counter.

Magilou’s Break Soul: “Spell Absorber”

When you use Magilou’s Break Soul at chanting enemies, you can cancel the enemy’s chant. At the same time, you can absorb the spiritual power produced by the enemy’s chanting, and when it accumulates to a certain amount, trigger a counter technique.

In the case that there is an enemy using an technique, this is an ability that shows overwhelming effect. Also, when you cancel a chant, it will effect all chanting enemies.
There are several counter techniques you can trigger, and which one is triggered is based on Magilou’s mood in the moment.

1. While the enemy is chanting its technique, press the R2 button to trigger Spell Absorber.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_008.jpg

2. Cancel the enemy’s chant and at the same time absorb its spiritual power.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_009.jpg

3. When you accumulate a certain amount of absorbed spiritual power, you’ll trigger a powerful counter technique.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_010.jpg

4. The triggered counter technique is random, but there are wide range and high power techniques, and skillful use can catch all the enemies in a single blow.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_011.jpg

■ Combos Using Break Soul

Break Souls can be embedded into combos, and you can link at least as many Break Souls as the number of souls you posses. When you trigger a Break Soul, in exchange for one soul, there is a special characteristic that lets you resume the combo from the first stage of your artes without stopping while staying in the combo state.

Example: A combo when you have four souls

Immediately following a four combo arte link, you trigger Break Soul. The Break Soul consumes one soul, reducing your total amount of souls to three. You can resume the combo from the first stage of your artes without stopping and continue until you get down to three souls.

1. The first arte…

2. The second arte…

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_013.jpg

3. The third arte…

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_014.jpg

4. The fourth arte, naturally where the combo ends, but…

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_015.jpg

…a Break Soul is triggered and in exchange for one soul, you can start the combo again from the first arte.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_016.jpg

5. The Break Soul…

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_017.jpg

6. The first arte again…

7. The second arte again…

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_019.jpg
8. The third arte again, and since you only have three souls, you can only link until the third arte…

…before, if you’re playing as Velvet, you end the combo with a powerful 秘術.

Tales-of-Berseria_03-24-16_021.jpg
■ Other Break Soul Characteristics

Since Break Souls also have an effect where they recover HP when triggered, by adding combos to a Break Soul, you can recover HP while attacking. Additionally, Break Souls also have a guard break effect.

■ Changing the Controlled Character

By pressing L1 + the left or right directional keys, you can switch between the character you’re controlling. In the battle menu, you can also switch between characters using the L2 and R2 buttons.

Tales of Berseria’s “Eizen” Is 1,000-Years-Old And Is Likely Edna’s Brother . April 13, 2016 . 3:00am

Tales of Berseria’s recently introduced character Eizen is apparently a 1,000-year-old pirate/rival with the appearance of a 30-year-old man,
and he’ll be there to help out Velvet and friends.

20160413_044933_thumb-1.png
Bandai Namco recently introduced a new character for Tales of Berseria by the name Eizen, and the latest Japanese magazine reports suggests that he’s likely Edna’s brother from Tales of Zestiria. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

[Editor’s Note: We previously reported the name “Aizen” as it reads that way in Japanese as アイゼン, kind of like Mr. “Just As Planned” from Bleach, but the recent magazine scan shows its Romanization as “Eizen,” so we’ll go with that. It’s also worth noting that Eizen from Zestiria was “Aizen” in the Japanese version.]

As shown above, Eizen (CV: Toshiyuki Morikawa) has his age listed at 1,000-years-old (with the appearance of a 30-year-old). He’s also a martial arts-type fighter that uses his bracelet as his weapon.

Again, there’s been some talk about how his appearance and name suggests that he could be the older brother of Edna from Tales of Zestiria. The newest image further suggests that it’s the case, as Eizen is shown wearing boots with the same designs as Edna’s.

Tales of Berseria will release in Japan on August 18, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. You can check out its latest in our earlier report.

■ Skit System

ToB-Blog-Update_04-22-16_011.jpg

Every Tales game has a skit system where the characters talk to each other outside of battles and cutscenes. It’s a great way to get to know everybody better. Discussions can range from serious emotional moments to funny scenes that have you dying of laughter.

For Tales of Berseria the skit system introduces a “cut-in” effect. Character illustrations are inserted into corresponding converstaions in a variety of ways. Sometimes a skit describes a single character’s facial expression, sometimes it shows a conversation among multiple characters. The expressions change depending on the cut. This new way of portraying enables the team to highlight characters’ relationships in the conversations.

ToB-Blog-Update_04-22-16_012.jpg

A skit can show the relationships of characters not seen in the main story.

ToB-Blog-Update_04-22-16_013.jpg

There are also big full-screen illustrations!

■ Battle System

Switch Blast

ToB-Blog-Update_04-22-16_014.jpg

The Switch Blast is a character switch system that enhances the degree of freedom in battles and expands strategic gameplay. Let’s delve into what this really means…

Switch Blast is the action that the player switch a character in battle to back up character.

The backup character has one more soul than usual when joining a battle. So, if a character in battle loses “Soul” and is at a disadvantage, a player can strategically utilize this action.
(1) When pushing down on the d-pad, a player can be switched with the targeted character (Magilou in this case)
(2) When Magilou joins the battle, she attacks.
Then, she has one more “Soul” added to the “Soul” she originally has.

When the backup character joins the battle that character is uses an attack.

Just push the up or down button on the d-pad to switch a battle member with a selected back up character. Switch Blast consumes 1 gauge of BG (Blast Gauge).

The Switch Blast is tied to a character’s Blast Gauge. As a reminder, this gauge is necessary to execute specific actions. In Tales of Berseria, this gauge can be filled predominantly by using “Break Soul”.

“Switch Blast” and “Mystic Artes” (to be revealed later) can be executed by consuming Blast Gauge.

If a player loses Soul, for example when they are inflicted with a status ailment, sometimes the player can find themselves in a tricky situation. In such a difficult situation, the player can overcome this danger by using Switch Blast.

Eleanor has only one Soul. She can execute just one arte and is in trouble.

Switch with Velvet by using Switch Blast.

Velvet joins the battle with one more Soul added and the player now can make combo chains to attack enemies.

New Characters’ Battle Styles

—Eizen

Eizen uses boxing attacks in melee battles and uses malak artes in long-range battles. Eizen can be a great vanguard and rear guard.

Eizen’s Break Soul – “Draconic Drive“: Area attack ability with strong power and wide range to be executed only when the condition is met

Eizen’s Break Soul can be executed only when the enemy is stunned or down.

This ability can deal high damage by spewing flames from the air and consuming the enemies around.

The required condition to execute this Break Soul is more difficult than the other characters but its strength is overwhelming.

This can be executed even if a non-targeted enemy is stunned or down, so pay attention to the other enemies on the field to gain the chance to use Eizen’s Break Soul.

—Eleanor

Eleanor fights with a spear for long reach and can attack middle-range with artes. Eleanor is good in melee/middle range battles.

ToB-Blog-Update_04-22-16_020.jpg

Eleanor’s Break Soul – “Aerial Strike”: This launches an enemy into the air and can link to the aerial combo!
Eleanor can launch an enemy into the air with a spear and keep her combo against the falling enemy.

Her action is simple and easy to use. It is easy to include this in the combo and also it is easy to use to achieve Guard Break.

When she learns more abilities, she become able to do a following up attack in the air.

After a few different stories in past year, we have multiple reports of character costumes going through a few changes during localization. Tales of Berseriaproducer Yasuhiro Fukaya has assured fans that this will not be the case with the main protagonist Velvet.

Dualshocker‘s reports his response from a recent event:
I promise. Velvet’s costume will surely be the same in the western version. The design of that costume is created by Mutsumi Inomata, and she created that costume based on the character’s concept and setting, and on the storyline.
I believe that those who support the Tales Of series like to have exactly the same content as the Japanese version. We believe it’s ideal and the best option to bring exactly the same game experience and design to the western countries. I promise that Velvet is still Velvet in the western version.
Tales of Berseria is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Aug 18 in Japan; PlayStation 4 and PC in EU and NA.

Bandai Namco has released new Tales of Berseria details and screenshots, introducing new characters and half siblings Oscar Dragonia and Teresa Linares.

Get the information below, via Bandai Namco:
Oscar and Teresa hail from the Abbey, an organization of exorcists that were established to protect people from the threat of daemons, humans who have turned into creatures from the Daemonblight disease. The Abbey leads political and military action in the Holy Midgand Empire with the mantra “sticking to reason brings order and peace.” Exorcists of the Abbey are ranked by their ability and are divided between three ranks: Legate, Praetor, and Orderly.

  • Oscar Dragonia – A strong Praetor exorcist with a strong sense of duty to eradicate all daemons. He is from the Dragonia family, a major aristocracy in the Holy Midgand Empire and Teresa is his older half-sister.
  • Teresa Linares – A Praetor from the Abbey who governs Hellawes, a northern town in the Holy Midgand Empire. She is known as the “Frozen Queen” because of her cold and stoic personality, although she dotes on Oscar, her younger half-brother, and will show emotion when she is alone with him.
Tales of Berseria is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on August 18 in Japan, and for PlayStation 4 and PC in North America and Europe in early 2017.

Tales of Berseria ‘Oscar, Teresa, Dyle, Mystic Artes, and Equipment Skills’ screenshots

Bandai Namco releases set of 55 new screenshots.

ToB_05-16-16.jpg

Bandai Namco has released a new set of Tales of Berseria screenshots, further introducing new characters Oscar and Teresa, Dyle and Mystic Artes, and more.

Here’s the overview of information Bandai Namco sent out with the screenshots:
Oscar Dragonia and Teresa Linares are both praetors of the Abbey, the organization of exorcists. Oscar is serious in his work but he shows great hostility towards daemons. His elder half-sister Teresa is called the ‘Frozen Queen’ because she carries out her duties without emotion. Meanwhile in the story, Velvet meets Dyle, a lizard daemon who was a member of the shipping guild – but he transgressed and experienced the onset of daemonblight. He is now being chased by the Abbey.

New combat moves and skills will be featured in Tales of Berseria – with a new attack type included in the Liberation-LMBS (Linear Motion Battle System). ‘Mystic Artes’ are powerful special attacks that cause huge damage to enemies with an impressive cut-in animation. Players can also strengthen a character to activate new and hidden skills as the game progresses. There are lots of different effects that skills can have on a character, with three types of equipment skills that can be activated: the ‘Master Skill’, the ‘Enhancing Bonus’ and the ‘Random Skill’.
Tales of Berseria is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on August 18 in Japan, and for PlayStation 4 and PC in North America and Europe in early 2017.

A tale of emotion versus reason…
In Tales of Berseria, players embark on a journey of self-discovery as they assume the role of Velvet, a young woman whose once kind demeanor has been replaced and overcome with a festering anger and hatred after a traumatic experience three years prior to the events within Tales of Berseria. Velvet will join a crew of pirates as they sail across the sea and visit the many islands that make up the sacred kingdom of Midgand in an all-new adventure developed by the celebrated team behind the TALES OF series. Veteran TALES OF character designer Mutsumi Inomata has personally designed Velvet and famous Japanese animation studio, ufotable, returns to animate the game’s breathtaking cutscenes; delivering truly epic and emotional storytelling in their unique style.
Features

  • New battle system – Evolved form of Linear Motion Battle System adds new option to map artes to control pad buttons for chained combo attacks.
  • Powerful playable character options – Play as one of six different characters, each with his or her own unique skills, further enhanced by Soul Breach combo attacks with other party members.
  • Beautiful animation movie – Famed animation studio ufotable returns to produce Tales of Berseria’s stunning cinematic sequences.

Tales Of Berseria Presents A United Front. June 21, 2016 . 1:30pm

Tales of Berseria’s battle system keeps every character in mind, with easy ways to swap people in and out of the party.

118 comments Read >

Tales games can have large casts. There are six people in Tales of Xillia, for example, and eight in Tales of Zestiria. But, you can only have four people in your active party at a time, sending them out to help fight your battles. At E3’s Tales of Berseria demo, the battle system was what was really on display and, in this entry, you really feel like every fight is a group effort.

The brief segment of Tales of Berseria people were able to play took place on a beach. Velvet and her crew were searching for a Malak which looked like a cat in a witch costume. This entailed searching along some cliffs and coves, encountering various enemies along the way.

Tales of Berseria has one of the most active battle systems in the series. Pretty much every attack could be considered similar to an arte, with players able to arrange combos from learned skills before battles begin. Each action button has one arte assigned to it, and a combo can have four artes assigned to it, for a total of 16 that can be used via button presses in a battle. A player can freely run around the battlefield, going up to an enemy and launching into any combo they choose.

A character’s Soul Gauge, represented by diamonds on their status bar, shows how many attacks they can use at a time. It is possible to continually attack, going over limits to defeat enemies and get a soul in return. Or, someone can be more prudent and pause. Waiting until at least three souls have built up in the gauge allows for a special Break Soul attack to be used. It allows for an incredibly supportive party filled with characters capable of powerful attacks at a moment’s notice.

Especially since any non-active party member can be immediately pulled into a battle. It’s easy to shift to another active ally by pushing a left or right button, though it’s also possible to press up or down to call someone who is on the sidelines in. The character status bars on the bottom screen show which characters could also be pulled into a battle. It’s easy to drag someone in or push someone out for an immediate transition.

I found it was a good way to see how different characters play. In most Tales games, I stick with the main hero or heroine as my playable character. At E3, Velvet, Laphicet, Magilou, Rokurou, Eleanor, and Eizen were all in the party. You can see if a mage, like Laphicet or Magiou, suits you, or stick with more traditional damage dealers like Velvet, Eleanor, or Rokurou.

This sense of togetherness extends to the victory screen. While Tales of Berseria maintains some brief segments showing a few characters who participated in that fight interacting, there were a few after-battle moments that showed the entire six character party. It was refreshing to see them all there, because they really were all there!

I liked that sense of camaraderie. We’re always seeing characters coming together and fighting for a common cause in the Tales series. We know we have a full party always with us. It’s good to see Tales of Berseria adjusting its battle system so we can easily pull everyone in at any time and simply switch off between characters to find a proper groove. It feels like a unifying experience.

Tales of Berseria will come to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan on August 18, 2016. It will arrive on the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in other regions in 2017.

The Tales of Zestiria – the X anime just recently began airing in Japan and, in the show’s opening sequence, an unexpected character can be seen making an appearance. [Thanks, Dual Shockers.]

Velvet, the main character from the upcoming Tales of Berseria, appears in the opening early on and also towards its end. Though both Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria take place in the same world, this is notable since the latter takes place in the distant past, raising questions as to why Velvet would appear given the varying timeframes.

You can watch the opening song in the following video, in which Velvet appears at both the 0:12 mark and the 1:12 mark.

The trailer introduces two new characters with Artorius/アルトリウス (CV: Kenyu Horiuchi) and Ceres/シアリーズ (CV: Satomi Arai). We’ll provide you guys with the localized names once it’s available.

Artorius was once a part of Velvet’s family, and she called him “Arthur” at the time. However, due to an incident he caused three years prior, the two have parted ways. As for Ceres, she’s a woman who does as commanded by Artorius. However, after regaining her feelings during the event three years prior, she begins questioning his actions.

Tales of Berseria will release in Japan on August 18 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The game is headed Westward in early 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC. It was also revealed that its original soundtrack album will release in Japan on September 28, 2016.
