Talk about Racism

Yeah.

If I noticed someone being uncomfortable on a plane 'cause a Muslim guy was on it, the uncomfortable person would be the person I'd keep my eye on.

You can keep your eye on whomever you want, I'll keep my eye on who I think is acting suspiciously.

man i wish i was muslim ,then id have a field day on the plane purposely acting suspicious.then id sue their ass's

haha you should pretend you have footitch and take of your shoe and look in side it.

I'm glad that the men unfairly treated cooperated with dignity and respect. But I hope that once they arrive at their own destination they do something about it, to end the profiling.

I'm not angry at the captain or the authority figures - I'm angry at the passengers. The captain and the others didn't remove the men because they were suspicious, they were removed because the passengers were panicking.

Reminds me of the Doonesbury cartoon made after 9/11 when Michael Doonesbury boards a plane, and has to sit next to an Arab. He overhears the guy talking about "pilot training" and wigs out until he realizes the guy sells Palm Pilots. :D

I'm sure he does, which was probably the point. Quite frankly, it was genius on his part.

They should have been treated well, but with the times we live in, if you act in a way that draws attention to yourself, you can't expect people to not consider that you might be up to something.

The reason people were panicking was because they were different - the complaints seemed to be that they were scruffy, had bulky clothes, long hair, and were speaking Arabic.

First of all, if their first language is Arabic, they should have the right to speak Arabic.

Secondly, I challenge you to find me a person (not a celebrity with their own posse of stylists) who is able to maintain that "fresh and flawless" look after eight hours in an airport or on a plane. I mean, honestly! :whatever:

The alternative is worse.

Warlord, there's no two ways about it. The people on that plane acted irrationally. The two men only spoke in arabic... or is that enough to warrent suspicion these days?? Stop trying to justify things that aren't justifiable. The people on that plane should be ashamed of themselves.

You mean the alternative to being an irrational paranoid freak that delays planes??

Man, your argument sucks. It basically implies that all suspicion against people that speak arab and look a little scruffy is justified and that we should bend to the whims of paranoid freaks everywhere - because the alternative is worse!! Dum dum duuuuuuuuuuuuum!!! What a dumb reactionary attitude. You could apply your argument to so many things, it's ridiculous.

Guy 1: "Hey man, let's walk across the street, those black men are young and are dressed hip, they might rob us!"

Guy 2: "Dude, that's racist"

Guy 1: "THE ALTERNATIVE IS WORSE!!"

YEAR: 1970 Something

Guy 1: "Hey, that guy has an irish accent, let's get the heck out of this pub before he blows us all up!"

Guy 2: "Don't be a paranoid idiot!"

Guy 1: "THE ALTERNATIVE IS WORSE!!!"

I disagree. When you have terrorists who use their ability to fit in to do people harm, people naturally don't want to take chances. The price to pay is too high otherwise.

See what I said above. Man, I'd love to have an argument with someone like you on a plane full of people. I'd end the argument with something along the lines of "it's your problem, so get the **** off the plane" and "when you're in bed tonight, you're going to wake up in the middle of the night feeling like a racist jerk. And not only will I be alive at the end of this flight, my concience will be clear".

I wouldn't wake up feeling like a racist jerk. I don't wake up with guilty feelings for little reason like yourself.

I hope you get off every flight alive and a clear conscience.

Well, the chances of me being blown up in a plane by a terrorist are about the same as winning the lottery jackpot every single week for, like, 3 months straight.

It would take a whole lot more than a Muslim man talking arabic and looking scruffy for me to get suspicious. If you can't say the same, then sorry, but you ARE a racist jerk.

And thanks for ignoring my other post.

I only ignore posts because I either don't see them or they are pointless to respond to and I did see your post.

Being aware or your surroundings and watching for suspicious activity doesn't make one racist.

It is when you consider Muslims suspicious just because they're speaking arabic. You've lost this argument. The men did nothing out of the orginary to draw attention to themselves.

Being alert and watching is one thing. If you're an airport guard, and you see an Arab, screen him as thoroughly and carefully as you do everyone else. If you want to be a little more thorough or careful, fine, your call.

But ACTING is another. Security measures have all been tightened considerably since 9/11 - to the point where when they caught those terrorists with the liquid bombs, they hadn't even boarded the plane yet. Even better - they were able to catch the terrorists on a DRY RUN, before they even planned on blowing up the plane.

Here's a funny story - my dad went to Wisconsin to visit his uncle. When he arrived, his uncle invited him out to a restaurant with a familiar name. My dad realized, "Hey, wasn't this restaurant chain in the paper? Something about a huge salmonella strain?"

His uncle said, "Yeah, it happened weeks ago."

My dad said, "Then why are we eating here?"

His uncle, with a grin, replied, "Because now they're guaranteed to be the cleanest restaurant in town."

This applies to the airline flights. If a person sits next to you on a plane, you can be assured they've been searched and screened. If an Arab sits next to you on a plane, well, then you're doubly safe - because you can rest assured that every airport guard they've passed has personally made sure they are.

See my point?

You and I weren't there so neither of us can really say if what they did was suspicious or not. It's unlikely that an entire airplane of people are going to go half-cock without reason.
