Can someone please explain to me why this Disney animated movie cost $260 million to make?

well....in the 60s, Cleopatra cost something like 45 million, which in today's amount, equates to over $290 million. And I'm pretty sure both Avatar and one of the Pirates movies cost more than Tangled. But to answer your question, Tangled was in production for a long time; a lot of time (and therefore money) was spent trying to replicate the look and feel of traditional animation using 3d techniques.

This is pretty common with Disney animated features. For some reason they'll animated half the movie and then at that point either --the director drops out/kicked off, or they find the movie just doesn't work and have to re-animated/story board the while thing.

even Pixar's Ratatouille went through this
