LAKE WYLIE, S.C. -- A man escaped from a tanning bed as it burst into flames, sparking a fire that evacuated a Lake Wylie shopping center and damaged several stores Monday, authorities said.

No one, including the man in the bed, was hurt. But several stores in the Bethel Commons strip mall off S.C. 274 and S.C. 49 suffered smoke damage that will likely keep them closed most of the week, said Bethel Fire Chief Don Love.

Authorities are investigating what ignited the bed at Ultratan.

The man who escaped declined to give his name but said he was working on his tan when he heard a popping noise, then saw a flame at the corner of the tanning bed near his foot. He threw open the lid and jumped out, he said.

When firefighters arrived around 4:15 p.m. "smoke was pouring out of all sides of the building," said Bethel Assistant Fire Chief David Long. By 5:30 p.m. the fire was out and smoke cleared.

That movie clip is freaky. Could you imagine going like that?

Our deaths are far less elaborate than those designed in final destination .

They may have escaped death this time, but skin cancer is only a heartbeat away.

the FD movies scare me more then any horror movie ever... why? because it shows how easily we can friggin cause our own deaths :(

I figured a manifestation commonly viewed as "death" set up a chain of events that naturally flowed in sequence to cause the deaths of human beings. This somehow was set out of balance due to some human or humans "knowing" when "death" would "strike" next, thus causing "death" to get pissed off and seem to actually "try" to kill other human beings with a specific intent or motive. At least, that's what I got out of it.

:o

well yes, that would be the main plot of the movie....

lol i just take a dif spin on it.. some of those things (while exaggerated) could actually happen (car accidents, plane of glass falling, getting hit by a bus, etc.. )

Whoops, I just now reread your post. I thought you meant that people caused their own deaths in the movies. My bad.

As if Final Destination 3 didn't suck enough...

It was alright. I just hated how it had very lose connections to the first ones. I was pissed Ali Larter went out like such a dumbass in the second after spending the whole movie being super intelligent about Death and it's plans.

Wait a second... The man was inside?

No wonder he didn't want to give his name. I can't imagine any dude going to a tanning salon in the middle of March.

Haha I'm sorry but just from reading the title I had to laugh. Crispy.

Whats wrong with men getting tans?

Golden brown texture like sun. Lays me down with my mind she runs. Throughout the night. No need to fight. Never a frown with golden brown ...

I thought FD was Faces of Death.

Maybe it's understandable if you're a ginger.
